the emoji movie commercials say "It's the perfect family movie" usually that would be correspond with a quote from a critic... this commercial did not... which just tells me they couldn't find ANYONE saying ANYTHING even halfway positive about this... I was waiting for Armond White to come in and give it a glowing review as an all time children's classic, but now that it already has a couple of (barely) positive reviews I doubt he'll bother.

Using the "We're number 2!" clip in a trailer with no quotes from critics was a little funny the first time I saw it, I'll admit. I mean, everyone expected it to be terrible, but it's nice to have confirmation.

That... that was funny. And we're not getting this? If it's any consolation it freed up Genndy to make the last Season of Samurai Jack. We did get part of what the Popeye movie would have been. Tartakovsky used his concept of what would have been the big fight scene in Hotel Transylvania 2. That scene alone made me wish we were getting that Popeye movie instead.

Reading some of the quotes from critics makes me think the movie isnt as bad as people are saying.
Now Im sure is a really bad movie but at the end of the day its still just a harmless kids movie that'll come and go. Saying stuff like "Soul Crushingly awful to the point of making you question your humanity" is needlessly hyperbolic.
Its like the Angry Video Game Nerd is no longer an over the top representation of criticism.

Saying stuff like "Soul Crushingly awful to the point of making you question your humanity" is needlessly hyperbolic. Its like the Angry Video Game Nerd is no longer an over the top representation of criticism. I think that's just critic cynicism talking; "They said that, so the movie is actually good or just okay.". But some things do go over the top. Here's where I see the problems; 1. The movie is a vehicle to promote apps & games. The Lego Movie was bad about that with certain references (including properties no longer affiliating with them, like the NBA), but the funny thing was that a lot of their own original creations (such as Bionicle & Friends) were only mentioned in passing with even some semblance of contempt. This movie unabashedly incorporates Candy Crush, Just Dance, and other things into the story with the attempt to promote them. Instead of them being a backdrop, they are the plot itself. 2. The expies to other films lack the depth to work well. Jailbreak, for example, doesn't have much point in the story besides being the rebel Gene becomes infatuated with and fights the phone virus. Also, there's nothing that makes you care about Alex, since the movie is primarily in his phone and he's merely an accessory to the plot. 3. It's a movie where you know the destination, but it also means you know the journey. The Emojis all have primary purposes & as a result, their personalities mostly coincide with their presentation, with 💩 only being proper & high maintenance as a "he's completely different" gimmick. Gene does not fit because he's too "deep" for emoji standards (this is the opposite of Benny, where he's looked at as too ordinary for people to care about him) in a world where you must act like what you represent (which borders on blatant stereotyping), but everyone eventually discovers their "depth".

Well, it's clear that Chris Stuckmann loathed this movie.

You know how it was predicted that this would do good despite negative reviews? Im sure people will react sensibly to this.

But just saying that its not hurting anyone. The fabric of western society isnt being torn apart by forgettable children's entertainment. Its a bad piece of entertainment to be damn sure but we gotta calm down alittle.

I know I already said this, but movies like this are why animation isn't taken seriously as a medium.

Remember Orion Pictures? They went bankrupt after putting so much faith in Weird Al's UHF movie (it tested very well, then performed poorly - still one of my favorite movies though) and I remember hearing that this studio was in a similar position with this movie. I don't see the Emoji movie becoming a cult classic like UHF, though. UHF had horrendous timing. From Wikipedia: Summer blockbusters had been around since Jaws made it a thing in the mid-70s, but the summer of 1989 is when it truly became what it is today, one superhugegiantmegamovie after another, week after week, all summer. And in that day and age, when it was still at least half a year before movies came out to rent after a theatrical run, most of those titles were still bringing in huge audiences when UHF hit. Hell, Batman alone wouldn't leave theaters for six months after its debut, and it and Ghostbusters 2 were setting major "all-time" money marks. God, I keep forgetting how gigantic 88 into 89 was when it came to movies.

You know how it was predicted that this would do good despite negative reviews? I feel like I have to go see Dunkirk tomorrow to stem the tide.

You know how it was predicted that this would do good despite negative reviews? Im sure people will react sensibly to this. Unless you're doing Marvel level first week numbers, number one doesn't really mean all that much these days especially with the ever present danger of a huge drop off going into the following weeks.

Yeah like how Spider-Man completely fell off after one week despite all the critical praise a movie could ask for.

You know how it was predicted that this would do good despite negative reviews? It's not a massive surprise that it made money; there was plenty of ironic interest surrounding it plus the parents that see a new animated movie and want to take the family to see it. If this was a week with, say, Spider-Man or Thor, it'd get destroyed, but Atomic Blonde and Dunkirk aren't competition for an animated movie meant for kids.

Dunkirk is projected to be number 1 now for what it's worth Unless you're doing Marvel level first week numbers, number one doesn't really mean all that much these days especially with the ever present danger of a huge drop off going into the following weeks. Yeah like how Spider-Man completely fell off after one week despite all the critical praise a movie could ask for. Fell off? It's still top 5 for the week Four weeks out... that's not falling off at all.
