Tuck rule was the onset, for sure.

I am a Colts fan, always hated them, it really picked up when Bledsoe was their QB and just grew from there for obvious reasons.

A lot of it I think comes from their fans. They have a ton of bandwagon fans as winning teams tend to do and on top of that lots of Boston fans are really insufferable to deal with.

I'm a Buffalo supporter, so that rivalry makes hating the Patriots pretty easy. And I don't care if Brady is considered one of the GOAT, he's a smug, arrogant prick to the extreme, and to me, that cancels out any talent he actually has.

From the people actually complaining about Boston sports fans as a part of the reason (seriously, there's a level when you actually go past complaining about the team and into complaining about their fans that does cross a line), it seems pretty clear:
When the Patriots actually won and that, by definition, meant that your team didn't get to.
But in defense, when your team inevitably wins, the rest of the world will hate you too.

A lot of fans are just bitter because the Patriots runs to 5 championships they've slaughtered a lot of teams along the way, crushed a lot of hopes and dreams of AFC teams time and again and beaten five different teams in the Superbowl.
You're going to make a lot of enemies when you beat a lot of teams.
Also pretty boy QB, the best ever to play and has done it for 17 years, married to a Victoria's secret mega model probably Combined billionaires together.
Also a coach that's about as approachable and nice to the media as airborne anthrax makes the media pitch a crap narrative about anything you do because they do t like you.
I grew up 1 town south of Boston and it's not the smugness of the fans here, the smug and obnoxious fans are usually obnoxious because they're drunk. But the main crux of the fan base here always seems to feel the hammer is about to drop because until this last 15 years Boston was Loserville.
So you win a lot you get hated a lot. I've never seen such misplaced anger in my life as much as I did during the Red Sox and Yankees rivalries mid 90s to mid 2000s. People here in Boston. HATED the Yankees like it was a war and most of that was misplaced because they just won all the time.

There's plenty of valid reasons stated here, but 2 of the more inaccurate ones should be addressed:
1) As much as people hate it, the tuck rule was called correctly by the letter of the rulebook. Hate that if you will, but there was no conspiracy afoot to get them the Superbowl title that year.
2) The Rams practice/walk through taping *never* happened and has been debunked repeatedly. The reporter in question AND ESPN both had to offer retractions.

While as a Bills fan I was always programmed to root against the Patriots by default- division rival and what all- the third SB title against Philly really made me 'Anyone but the Patriots. I didn't have anything the Parcells squad other than divisional rivalry, the first SB was a real surprise that came out of nowhere, and the second SB waS 'Well, how about that- they backed up the first one.'
The 2 titles in 3 years was not quite yet dynastic- think Denver's back-to-back titles with Elway- but the third made it a dynasty.
And unless you're a fan of said dynasty, it's a lot easier to root against Goliath.
And not to mention all the dreams they've crushed along the way.
New blood? A fresh new face hoisting the SB?
Nope. Just the same old inevitable ending.
There's a difference in seeing a team win their first title as opposed to their fifth.

My hatred began with the tuck rule. As the years went on and they kept winning despite being investigated for cheating more than once the hatred grew. Also it kind of had its genesis when Belichick and Brady ran Bledsoe out of New England. That first super bowl win should have been Bledsoes

Few things for me:
I liked Bledsoe as a kid. Pissed me off that he lost his job due to injury and never got a chance to get it back. Losing your job because you almost died, remember, Drew landed on the tip of the ball and got jacked up, and getting tossed is a dick move. So there's one.
Two, the tuck rule. How many times has it been called since? Or how many games has it affected? I actually went from hating Woodson from his days in Michigan, to loving him calling it what it was. "A bullshit call in a bullshit game." How do you let an obscure rule affect a game like that? This wasn't pass interference or holding. Like the guy stepping out of bounds this year with the white shoes, granted replay wasn't back yet, but that was a bullshit tacky call.
Spygate. Ok, whatever really happened, Coach Bill said that he didn't think they did anything wrong because that's how he interpreted the rules. Where does it say you can record an opposing team's practices? How can you say, "Yep, it says no. Clear as day. But here's what I think it means..."?
They've barely got into their Super Bowls, and for a while they were winning by field goals. Not really that impressive. They still win by slim margins. Where is this "dominance?" It's luck.
They never should have changed their unis from the bright red, white, and blue to that dark red, silver, and navy blue. I could almost forgive everything else if they had the old uniforms.
And they're just dull to me. The head coach who doctors injury reports and talks like a stroke victim when he gets in front of a camera. The "How dare you!" quarterback who bitches and cries more than anybody. They're just insanely unlikable. Kraft seems decent though.
But that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

But in defense, when your team inevitably wins, the rest of the world will hate you too. That actually is a pretty good point, as a Colts fan I saw this first hand. In 2007, the Colts/Bears supporters(in attendence) were pretty split, then the 2009 Superbowl happens and the Colts are getting booed at the game.

I personally can't hate the Patriots. I find Bellichick too unintentionally funny, especially when his fifteen minute rant about how much he hates the Microsoft tablets is compared to his five second announcement that he has a new grand daughter.
In addition, I find too much to respect in Brady, like how he intentionally takes lower contracts so the team has more money to spend, and how well he treats his teammates.
Now if my team were in the same division as the Patriots, and constantly lost to them, that might be a different story.

The tuck rule is a rule, was always a rule and it was called correctly. A bad rule is still a rule. The reason it's no longer called is because it's no longer a rule. They also never recorded another teams practice.. EVER. The fact that lie is still circulated shows how people like to grasp at straws to find a reason to hate a team other than the fact they've just been so good for so long. Also there's penalties for doctoring injury reports Redskins, Bills, Seahawks and Steelers have been fined for violations. The Patriots have not. Aqib Talib said he was listed as probable with a hip injury after leaving the team when he said he wasn't. Not sure why you'd hate a team over that.

If your team is a even a top team in the same conference as the Patriots, you would hate them. Because they are always there.

Where does it say you can record an opposing team's practices? How can you say, "Yep, it says no. Clear as day. But here's what I think it means..."? They recorded defensive signals. The confusion was the location of the filming. If they had filmed from the press box instead of the sidelines, there would have been no issue.

The tuck rule is a rule, was always a rule and it was called correctly. A bad rule is still a rule. The reason it's no longer called is because it's no longer a rule. It was called *against* the Patriots in week 2 of that same season.
