I really enjoy going through the early years and watching Hercules' progression into a pissed-off, roided out of his mind jobber to the stars. That guy sucked. And yet I've always wanted to know more about the guy. Hell, even Cornette liked him (professionally and personally) so there has to be something up with him...

Wrestlemania V This match was just kind of thrown together without any real build up. Welcome to pre-1990's wrestling. For me, at least, the idea of build up wasn't always a thing and so you didn't really care when there wasn't any. While I would like the Russo mentality of "someone always has something going on", in later years of my fandom I appreciate the matches that just......happen. No reason, no feud, no nothing.. In 1989?! Was....was he a suited official for a time? I always assumed he left the WWF immediately after his in-ring career ended. Random Snuka appearance still remains one of the oddest WWF/E segments ever. Just.....gets a special intro as Garvin and Bravo are in the ring ready for their match. This was Frenchy's last WWF appearance, IIRC. One of the best departures ever.

Wrestlemania 6 Is this the very last time Jesse and Gorilla did commentary together? I believe so. Even though (I keep forgetting) Jesse was around until almost Summerslam '90, it was he and Vince the rest of that time. I'm glad I have a bad memory, because it (probably) took me WAY longer than I should admit to finally realize that locker room.......wasn't in those arenas. (Rumble '94, I think. Luger was getting beat up backstage and I remember saying 'Man, Providence Civic Center has a shitty locker area.') 1) Arn & Tully had a deal in place to return to WCW/NWA by then. They weren't gonna be in the WWF in early '90. Tully's failed drug test got him fired from the WWF (the day of SurSer '89, which is when they did the test) and got his NWA deal revoked (but not Arn's deal). 2) I always suspected the Colossal Connection getting the belts was to get a belt on Andre before he left, which Vince had to know by then was going to be very soon... I believe it was only during the Colossal Connection era... But then Bruti went parasailing one day, and........... Wow, I never knew this actually. TV was so weird back then, what with the same exact people not appearing on every single show, that it'd take a while (if ever) to notice things like that... There was a series of (3) articles - all in the same issue - in WWF Magazine that talked about Slick getting Warlord, Heenan getting Barbarian, and then Fuji's reason for selling their contracts: the Orient Express. 2.5 years later, the managers were the only ones left in the company. Nah, her using Randy's......kind of gave you the impression that they'd be 'together again'... Making the finally 6-8 months of his career there absolutely bizarre to behold.. To be fair, the Berlin Wall didn't just fall over all at once. But Andre was gone. That was a huge loss on multiple levels, no matter how many others Bobby recruited to replace him. Not as bad as this: {Spoiler} Y'know, that seems familiar.... it may have been.. Really one of Jesse's greatest moments - that even he had no problem admitting that point at that moment was a brilliant line. I mentioned earlier that I forget he left several months later (Aug '90), and it's because, if there was ever a final line for WWF Jesse to go out on, it was THAT ONE.

Yeah, supposedly the initial plan for VI was Demolition regaining the titles from the Brain Busters, although Arn and Tully gave notice in September so who knows. It was kind of ridiculous they advertised Tully for Survivor Series as his last show was the Nov. 1 TV taping where he lost to Warrior. Haku began replacing him on house shows the very next day.

One thing about WM 7 that I noticed once and can't unnotice anymore is during Hogan's Hulk Up against Slaughter, there is a guy in the audience laughing his ass off as if what Hogan was doing was the funniest thing he had ever seen. Always distracts me when I watch that match.

Re: Last few posts
Pedro Morales was with WWF for another few years, at least. He was doing Spanish commentary in 1987, for example. Not sure how long he was with WWF. In 1995 I believe he was with WCW.
The Snuka appearance makes sense as both the home and live audience could see his return as opposed to if only the home audience saw a backstage interview.
Andre had the dark blue singlet starting at latest summer 1989 (his first PPV with it was Summerslam). I wonder why they changed it, though, from, black. I think black was more fitting his angry giant ways. Though I personally liked the dark blue color.
I wonder how often Jesse and Gorilla saw each other. I'm guessing not much other than the PPVs. But they had such good chemistry as if they were together often. I wonder if WWF had any office parties or if they saw each other in passing during TV tapings. Jesse and Gorilla are like a great TV buddy movie. You heard them together a few times a year, really not too often considering how many PPVs are on now, and last heard them 27 years ago but they were so great together. Bobby and Gorilla worked more often together.

Wrestlemania 7 Hacksaw couldn't even get a popcorn match on this show. Card was pretty stacked with everyone they had at the time, he was the most notable omission (any extra match he could've been put in would've basically been a JTTS match) but they used him well I thought. Duggan/Tugboat vs. the Orient Express, maybe? *shrugs* This was probably his last notable match. His next TV match was in the summer, he worked a European tour with the WWF and did Canadian house shows later that year, came back for a bit on a Euro tour in '92 and that was it. Haku was kind of the same deal, actually. He was on TV and house shows until the summer, then mainly wrestled on the other side of the Pacific (for the WWF and as part of a package deal with another org out there), came back for his brief Rumble '92 spot, went back overseas for a bit and left the WWF at some point after that. Yeah, the blindfold match was a bit silly but it's visually interesting and an impressive feat to watch get pulled it off so (relatively) well. And death puns. "UH OH DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY!!!" ...what? His startled call as the match ended has always stuck with me - "I don't believe it... that was Superfly Jimmy Snuka!" I mean, Snuka was a glorified jobber at that point but you still believed he meant something with Bobby's exclamation... .....so many dead wrestlers are alive in that universe, aren't they? Which is amusing since Steamboat (er, I mean THE DRAGON) returned on the first batch of post-WM7 tapings. Oh, that was beautiful. All that shit Randy put him thru, and for him to win the way he did....and then that last (undignified, but apropos) pin. Perfecto. Forgotten mere minutes later, too. So if you didn't like it, give em a sec....they'll make the world forget you just hated Randy for the last 2 years... But it worked. I hate to do the pun thing, but his delivery was perfectly deadpan. He wasn't being funny at all but it was funny. Even that far back the man knew how to stay in character and yet deliver something else.

Wrestlemania 8 One year ago Sherri joins up with DiBiase and now she's with Shawn. How times change. How did that switch happen? I suspect it was a bit before Money Inc. formed, which is when Jimmy Hart (immediately?) started with them. He spent every year after that losing at WM. This'd be his last, although he did wrestle (AND BEAT!!!) Papa Shango in the dark match of WM9... Would he have kept wrestling, I wonder? I suspect he'd have gone full backstage mode, based on how much he did want the job... But sadly, Vince reneged on the deal (Patterson quit because of the Terry Garvin scandal) by not hiring anyone to replace Pat "out of respect," which led to Jake just blowing his top and threatening to no-show WM8 if he wasn't granted a release after the event. I'd have loved it as much as the Duggan/Slaughter/Berserker/Herc/etc. SurSer match from a few months earlier (I loved that one). Also, I remember being really freaked out by the beating Mountie was giving Slaughter outside at the end. Very one-sided and brutal for Jacques to be meating out. It was expanded on when Mountie cost Slaughter a match with Flair a while later, leading to a comically oversized cattle prod shot that needed a stretcher bit, and the feud....went nowhere b/c Slaughter left, IIRC. And at this point in his WWF career he felt he needed to oversell others' offense and make it appear he'd reducing himself to being a beaten old woman... Perhaps? He was a great cheerleader on commentary for Flair (his quick departure was great and helped add to the chaos that would follow), but Perfect was quite good in his physical role at ringside (on the outside during and then in the ring afterwards) and Bobby just wouldn't have been able to do that... I don't even want to remember the explanation for why he was suddenly a doctor. lol Pimpin' some hoes, probably. A weird epilogue. But hey, Warrior stuck around a good long while to help in the transitioh wait never mind.

Wrestlemania 9 Me as a kid: Holy crap, Jim Ross. I know him! Me as a kid: Hey Gorilla, cool, wait what he's not what WHO WHO IS THIS?!?!?! well at least Bobby and Macho are there. 1992 was a weird transition year. Lots of old timers left by WM8, new guys wandered in during the rest of the year, remaining old timers wandered out by WM9 and a bit after... Yeah, he got a good pop when he won too. He was horrified by Beefcake's injury. It worked, at first, but then he starts wearing the red and yellow suits and suddenly nothing worked. Going back to being a heel in WCW was weird because of where he'd been, and knowing now that he'd been Hogan's IRL manager all along weirdly ages his character... Jet ski accident. The Mega Maniacs' faces literally jobbed to boats. Was this his last appearance? I wanna say yes but I also have vague recollections of him still being around in a non-wrestling role with Hogan here and there... YokozuMa! You heard it too!

Wrestlemania X
It's '93 it's time for Wrestlemania! wait....
Johnny B. Badd does a great job with America the Beautiful even if he lip synced
Lawler botches his first joke at Wrestlemania
I still remember the coin flip to determine who would wrestle twice. Let's see, Crush is feuding with Macho Man, so clearly Lex is gonna lose the toss and wrestle Crush at WM10 and not Bret vs. Owen
Bret was totally selfish and deserved what he got
It's funny how everyone thinks Bret would come out first
That kid sticking his tongue out is a star
This is definitely one of the best Mania openers
Although if it had been a tad shorter they could have still had time for the 10 man tag
Owen's Sharpshooter always looked better than Bret's
BRET'S TAPPING OUT!
At least Owen's win was believable. Kind of a fluke but something that might actually happen.
That white stuff on Owen's mouth still bothers me.
Bill Dunn looks like a bigger goof than Fink
Sy Sperling hadn't been relevant in years at this point. The celebs here remind me of Wrestlemania 2
Doink sprays Sy with water, how is he a face again?
Thanks for coming, Clowns
Dink botches the spot and gets splashed by Luna, she still sells it like she missed
Fiasco ending
Fake Clinton with IRS and Jack Tunney, the nWo could have formed this day
Me as a kid: Yes! A falls count anywhere match! Those are always crazy. *hears the rules* What?!? This sucks!
Randy Savage is impervious to cocaine
It's a good thing that random nonsense was back there for Randy to tie Crush to. Too bad he did a shit job
Someone who clearly wasn't Doink was getting dunked in that tank
Happy Jack the Clown should have formed a stable with Doink
I never got why sumo suits were so popular for a minute
Savage causing a riot at the Paramount Theatre
Leilani Kai aged 25 years in only 9 years
I'm not even sure what Lawler is talking about here instead of the match
Alundra gets the pin and cops a feel on Leilani's ass
Gratuitous parade of old timers. Mae Young's first WWF appearance, to the best of my knowledge.
Men on a Mission look like they're in jail with those stripes. Oh wait, they have vertical stripes.
Mabel with a brush on his head
Burt Reynolds with a random broken hand managing to bully Shawn out of getting some
As a kid I really wanted The Quebecers to just be The Mounties. thought it was stupid to wear the outfits and be called something else.
Oscar is pretty good at firing up the crowd
I was a big Scotty Flamingo mark as a kid, so seeing him stuck as a manager and announcer annoyed me
As soon as Men on a Mission's music started after the match I said "Funk is on a roll!"
I like how New Kids on the Block were trying to be edgier by changing the name of the group to "NKOTB"
Hey, the two Japanese guys from the Fanfest segment are right behind Rhonda Shear.
Donnie getting more heat than half the heels on the show
I actually called both of the special referees. I'm not sure if it was that obvious or I just made really good guesses.
I totally didn't even recognize Luger's entrance theme
The look on his face should have been enough to tell you he wasn't winning here
Perfect's referee outfit is absolutely ridiculous
The Perfect asshole. But at least there's continuity since Lex knocked out Perfect the year before. Too bad the angle went nowhere since Hennig's back screwed things up again.
"Monkey faced" is always one of my favorite insults
If Earthquake vs. Adam Bomb was going to be this quick they shouldn't have even bothered with the match.
Pretty sure Yokozuna just said "Ándale!" at Pettingill
Razor still threatening ring attendants about his gold. Some babyface.
Interesting getting Diesel out of the picture so early.
Did we really need to see Shawn's ass?
It's amazing how tame this ladder match is in comparison to later years
Razor falling off the ladder after Shawn fell seemed like a botch
This definitely could have ended a lot sooner. The last few spots are way too slow. But Shawn getting stuck in the rope is a nice touch
Heels arguing over who the captain is in a match where it doesn't even matter.
"I'M CAPTAIN!"
No time for the tag match but let's go back to the fake Clinton again
Also time for Bret Hart's stupid music video instead of just talk about the Hart/Yokozuna feud
Piper looks like he's lost 65 pounds since Wrestlemania 8
Vince just called him "Roddy Popper"
Piper counting way too fast and way too loud
I feel like all the energy is just gone for this main event
Definitely an interesting ending having Yoko fall off the rope but I feel like more should have been made of it.
Vince: I feel bad about the 10 man tag match not happening, send the faces out to say hi to Bret
Smoking Gunns: We ain't comin out for nothin!
Tony Garea tells Owen to leave. What a jerk!

The first few months of Yokozuna were strange because he was obviously being booked as a big deal yet it seemed a number of guys couldn't figure out what his name was or where he was billed from... Heenan would call him "Yokozuno", Fuji would call him "Yokozuma", Virgil called him "Yakazuma" Plus he had Fuji, the geisha girls and the Japanese regalia and yet he was billed from the Polynesian Islands. It all seemed too weird considering the push he got. I think even into 94 or so he was billed from the Islands.
I guess Vince saw Roddy Piper as a guy he just HAD to have back even without a real plan for him. Refereeing really wasn't his thing, he had to be the star/center of attention and the matches needed to focus on the wrestlers.
I was always disappointed when matches were cut from Manias especially since IV-VIII were so packed and no matches were cut. IIRC one of the wrestlers in the 10 man tag said he had his family come in for the show and he was disappointed when they realized it wasn't happening.
I wonder how an Earthquake/Ludvig Borga match would go down. I imagine that one would be cut.
I loved the ending with Bret and the faces congratulating him. Obviously Vince always thought of him as his guy and tried to put him over as main event status (which he was but really in the shadow of 10 years of Hogan). If Wrestling ever had an ending, a series finale, I think the WM 10 ending should be it.

Wrestlemania XI
Hey, let's recap every single Wrestlemania each year from now on to fill out the intro video!
Is that Shadoe Stevens doing the voiceover?
That brief period where Jenny McCarthy wanted to be Jennifer McCarthy for some reason
Audio problems right off the bat
It's 93 it's time for Wrestlemania! Again...
Lawler with a grin on his face looking like he wants to crack a joke about the singer
Luger dropped down to opening match after the previous year
Uncle Zeb Colter
Is there a way to remember how to tell Jacob and Eli apart?
This is such a throwaway match for a later Wrestlemania
Vince: Crap, LT's bringing 5 guys? DiBiase's only got 4 guys right now....just get Nikolai back for a night I guess. Pay him in corn or something.
More audio problems
I feel like Razor losing the title at the Royal Rumble was a yearly tradition
Still more audio problems
Razor jumps Jarrett before the bell but let's do the pyro anyway
I don't remember Razor wearing blue very often, at least not this shade
Kid puts his hands on Jarrett in front of the referee, no DQ call
Something about the combo of Vince and Lawler makes this seem like a B-show
They probably should have done an angle where Razor and the Kid faced Jarrett and Roadie with the IC title on the line. Would have made it interesting for Kid to win it that way and then that's eventually how he turns heel
Let's run the exact same bit with Nick Tuturro from earlier and act like it's new
I feel like everyone had the Undertaker's urn for a year or so
Also this seems really early in the show for a Taker match
It's Palette Swap Taker
Maybe Jarrett should have gotten involved with DiBiase so he could fund his music career?
Taker's feud with Kama starts before his match with Bundy is even over
oh, right. Special referee. totally forgot.
Bundy don't even look that mad at losing
Oh, I get it now. Nick is Bob Uecker and Pamela Anderson is Vanna White
Crazy Backlund loses chess to JTT
Keep the mic on the kid who is whispering instead of the old man who is yelling, you moron
There were rumors at the time that Owen's mystery partner was going to be Chris Benoit. Definitely would have changed history
Lawler breaking kayfabe by saying Owen was the Blue Blazer
It's pretty funny how Yokozuna basically wins the whole match by himself and then Owen gets the pin
I fell for the Bam Bam/LT thing as a kid only because they made him apologize and the way Vince sounded after it happened.
I'd say LT probably deserves a WWE Hall of Fame spot but his legal problems will ensure that may not ever happen
Oh hey, Roddy again. It's kind of losing the specialness now.
Remember when "No Fear" was a huge thing? And Taz for that matter?
Oops, "WWF" is getting edited out during this match.
WHATTAYASAY?!?!?!?!?
Lawler: Who did Bret beat at Wrestlemania 8? Vince: The British Bulldog! Lawler: what?!? Vince: Right?
What's Lawler talking about with Bret hating Japanese people?
This match is dreadful
Bret barely has the chickenwing on Backlund.
Backlund says "YAHHHHHH" but Piper does nothing. Backlund says "AHHHH" and Piper calls for the bell.
Backlund's "I Saw a Light" could have been interesting but failed
Lawler: How old is young Jonathan? Too easy
Nick Tuturro looks like Baba Booey
I think Hillbilly Jim is one of the photographers at ringside
Pamela Anderson was contractually obligated to accompany Shawn Michaels down the aisle. I hope she didn't get paid!
Pamela looks annoyed to even be there when she sits down
HBK vs. Photographer Round 1 goes to HBK
Diesel vs. Photographer Round 1 goes to Photographer
Sid getting a shit ton of chants. It's amazing they went with keeping him heel but turning Shawn face.
Are the photographers just taking pics of Pamela the whole time?
Shawn really didn't have much trouble with Diesel, too bad Sid is a mess up
The whole ending feels like they're moving in slow motion
Pam leans over to ask if it's almost over
Diesel with a shitty powerbomb on Shawn to end it
Nash: I'm hardcore, I'll take em both!
Bundy doesn't seem too upset about his loss.
Why are they making everyone run to the ring? Are we that short for time?
Nikolai never got his revenge on DiBiase.
Pat Patterson sneaking into a Mania main event once again
We don't even have the particpants out here yet and it's already a cluster
Salt N Pepa just standing there without their music being included makes them seem like cage dancers or something
Bam Bam does a really good job of making LT look good but I think this needed to be some kind of tag match
Awkward spot with Bigelow hitting a moonsault on LT then....something happens
LT kicks out of every one of Bam Bam's finishers. The match needed to end on a fluke
A FOOTBALL PLAYER BEAT YOU!

Lawler breaking kayfabe by saying Owen was the Blue Blazer Nah, they revealed that post heel turn. Later in the year after Neidhart came back, I remember the magazine had an article about him "poisoning Owen's mind" which included him telling Owen that Bret got them to make him the Blue Blazer so he couldn't outshine Bret.

Raise your hand if you got a blue screen and technical difficulties at the end of Bret-Backlund. I see Bob locking in the chicken wing, screen goes out. Blue screen comes on. One minute later, live action, everybody going bat-shit Bret won. Bob's looking at his hands.
(Even rewatching it on the Network, I can't shake that thought.)

I was recording the event live and still kept recording the blue screen since for all I knew the event was going to go back in a second. Of course, it ended up being several minutes. I eventually decided to record over that footage with scenes from I Love Lucy (a favorite of mine. Hey that's more entertaining than looking at a blue screen.)
