I was watching the 1997 royal rumble on the network today and it got me to wonder why were there guys like Barry Windham Bradshaw and a few others left off the card? Were they supposed to be in it? I remember reading on here a few weeks ago I think that they along with executioner were supposed to be in it.

Bradshaw and Windham were in the process of being repackaged as the New Blackjacks.
Plus with the luchadors added to the match, somebody had to miss out.

Gordy may have been fired already at that point. Dude was in serious drug problems/trouble at that point (1997! imagine how big of an abuser he must have been)
Bradshaw and Stalker were sideshow undercard acts anyway

Bradshaw and Windham were in the process of being repackaged as the New Blackjacks. How long does that take? They basically just cut and dyed their hair and waxed up their mustaches. Goldust, HHH, Ahmed, Faarooq, Undertaker and Vader were in it even though they all had undercard matches. I'd much rather have seen Furnas and LaFon, Bradshaw, Windham, Aldo Montoya, Bob Holly, Leif Cassidy and others of their ilk participating, just to freshen things up.

I'm guessing they wanted the fans to forget Bradshaw and Windham even existed (not hard to do at that point) before re-introducing them as the new characters. And if they'd done that (taking out Taker, Vader etc.) then the Rumble would have been seriously lacking in star power. It basically would have been Austin, Bret, Owen, Bulldog and a bunch of no-hopers.

It basically would have been Austin, Bret, Owen, Bulldog and a bunch of no-hopers. Yeah. You're right. So how about this? Vader, Undertaker, Faarooq, Ahmed, Goldust are all entered in the Rumble to boost star power, with their respective singles matches scrapped. We get HHH vs. Windham (Stalker) for the IC title (a match they did on TV that was excellent, one of the few bright spots for Windham during that period). Goldust interferes to further the HHH feud. But it backfires, Windham ends up getting knocked out somehow and loses, and Bradshaw comes down afterward, presumably to kick at Windham's carcass. Except he smacks Windham awake, yelling things at him that we can't hear, and they end up leaving together. And there we have an actual storyline seed for the New Blackjacks. Elsewhere on the undercard: the blowoff match between Billy and Bart Gunn that never happened (I think Billy was taking time off during this period with an injury angle, but they could have made something work for the big PPV), and a hot tag team opener with Furnas and Lafon against Cassidy/Sal Sincere (or even the not-quite Headbangers). Ahmed and Faarooq go nuts on each other in the Rumble, with the Nation getting involved and all kinds of shenanigans. HHH sneaks down to get Goldust eliminated. Vader and Undertaker ... meh. That feud was lifeless anyway. Austin still wins the same way.

We've gone this far in a thread about Royal Rumble 1997 without talking about Adam & George? For shame.

I think that was where one of them pissed themselves when Undertaker won the best tattoo award. Ah Vince...never change.

The night before the Rumble, Terry Funk called Todd Pettingill's mother a whore on Shotgun Saturday Night.
Best PPV go-home show in history.

I remember thinking Fake Diesel got robbed out of a title shot because he was technically one of the final four. Steve Austin should have not been allowed to participate in the four way for the vacant title. I made a thread on it days ago but somebody quickly noted Fake Diesel was eliminated fairly
I have that recorded on VHS somewhere. Was stoked for the Ahmed-Faarooq payoff but they simply never delivered on that angle.

Bradshaw and Windham were in the process of being repackaged as the New Blackjacks. Plus with the luchadors added to the match, somebody had to miss out. Why were all those random luchadors in the match anyway? The story goes that they were trying/hoping to get 70,000 in San Antonio and cement HBK as "the" top guy in the business. Problem was that the advanced sales were shit so they had to fill seats/ save face any way that they could. As the show came closer seats were going for as cheap as $10, but they still couldnt get the place filled. They ended up striking a deal with AAA, which was over big in San Antonio, in an attempt to get more seats filled...and flesh out the undercard of a MASSIVELY thin roster. On the show they announce attendance as over 60k, according to Cornette over 12.5K of those were comps.
