Not sure why they'd go with Gunn of all people for a token defense, my guess would be that in exchange for becoming a trainer at the US Dojo, they'd give him a title shot.

And yeah, I imagine part of it is so Tana can work an easier match, with his arm still hurting.
So the title matches seem a bit underwhelming, but the US title tournament looks awesome. Love Naito complaining about there being too many belts, saying the US title is basically just what the IC title was supposed to be, losing the IC title...then entering the US title tournament. Perfect.

I can live with Cody vs Okada, but Gunn vs Tanahashi? Come on, they could have done better than this. At least that tournament for the US belt looks awesome.

Am I crazy for thinking Omega might get the US belt? He's been more than made with the Okada matches, is a star, and would give the belt and their US expansion some instant credibility.

It's not a bad idea. There isn't a rush to put him vs Okada again and assuming someone like Naito wins the G1, than I wouldn't see why wouldn't they give Omega the first crack at the belt. I think people assumed it would be Cody but that looks dead and if Kushida didn't win back the belt the other day I would of considered him a dark horse Putting it on Omega will give it an instant shot of credibility and when the time is right he can drop it to someone else.

So here is the actual bracket. The potential for an amazing finals that would blow away everyone is there. I personally think its going to be Elgin vs Naito with Elgin getting his win back but really with the exception of Hangman Page I would be happy with any of these guys winning it

I'm looking forward to Cody/Okada. People give Cody a hard time but I like him and I think he's a unique opponent for someone like Okada, I'm interested to see what that match looks like.
I'm actually looking forward to Billy Gunn/Tanahashi too just because that sounds like a weird match. But there's not really a good explanation for it, if it's for a title.

If they were still doing the Tanahashi is losing big matches storyline they had going I would be worried but this is just hey take it easy, do your signature stuff, and get out of there in one piece. Could they have found someone better, absolutely but the tournament looks fire so Gunn having a match is not killing me

He still has a "sports entertainment" feel to me, which I don't mean as a bad thing, it's just the way he comes off to me, so I'm interested to see how that jives with Okada's more physically intense and gritty style. I'm a sort of fairweather NJPW viewer so I'm just not accustomed to seeing Okada in anything but really intense, competitive matches. Cody just seems like a different breed from his usual opponents, a lot more showy and animated, I'm interested to see what kind of match this ends up being.

The thing about Okada is that he meshes with anyone and usually defers to their style. Kenny is a f***ing maniac, Shibata is hard hitting, Suzuki is hard hitting plus malicious etc.... I said before that he should lead this match more instead of letting CODY coast through the match. Cody needs to show he can hang with the ace if he wants to be more featured more. His "sports entertainment" feel isn't bad per se but he leans on it way too much and is not adapting to his opponents. I'm sure Okada can find a way to mix their styles and make a damn good match out of it but for me this match is more about what will Codys future in NJPW be than anything.

I'd love to see Naito/ZSJ. Hopefully they give Big Mike the US title to have a solid first reign.

Modern day New Japan as a whole generally feels more "sports entertainment" to me than ever. The roster is full of showy and flamboyant characters. Heck, Shibata stands out by his gimmick being "the straight-laced guy". I dunno, to me Cody doesn't seem too out of the ordinary against Okada's usual opponents. The match'll probably be good/great. Big Dave was talking about Cody maybe winning the belt if they go with the "Okada's worn down" angle. That....could work. I think Cody's ready for the main event stage.

Omega winning the US title would be a good way to keep him busy for the forseeable future, which is a must if they want to hold off on match three of the Okada series until January 4th; I see him stealing the G1 title match from someone before WK, rather than going for the too-predictable route of rehashing last year.

Going against the popular picks, I much rather see Juice Robinson win the US title. No better way to show that he has arrived than making him run the tourney while beating some top names along the way. Plus you elevated a new person and rewarding Juice for thriving in the NJPW system. Omega winning would be a boobie prize for not being able to beat Okada and he's already established as top tier. Same for Naito, whose not happy about more midcard titles being added to the mix. If you're trying to establish a regular US touring group, it's best to have the champion as someone who can make all of your shows with no problem.

Well the actual touring group won't start in the US until 2018 and Juice has said that he wants to stay in Japan. I feel like one of the bigger names will win the championship, though I don't think it would be Naito because its pretty clear given his gimmick he would treat it like crap and that's the last thing you'd want someone to do with a belt that hasn't been established. I'd think the best plan would be to have who ever wins it here have a bunch of amazing title defenses until losing it at Wrestle Kingdom to the guy you are going to have headlining your tour who ever that is. Omega standing tall at the end would make the place go nuts and have the internet buzzing but it seems like they plan for Omega to win the world title relatively soon so I'm not sure that's in the plans. ZSJ is too busy defending all the other titles he has so its doubtful he'd win. Lethal is an ROH guy though and though and unless they want it to be a secondary ROH title I doubt they would give it to him. Page is out of the question...due to him being Page. I like Elgin as the choice but right now he actually runs his own promotion so I'm not sure hes the right fit...
...Maybe its actually Ishii, every match he would have would be amazing, he probably wouldn't have anything to do for Wrestle Kingdom and who ever he'd lose it to would look like a million bucks and would go to back to the US with a ton of hype to start the touring group
