Archie screwed up one too many times for Sega no doubt, losing the Penders case is bad enough, then to have to go through the whole thing again from Fulop and likely every other disgruntled freelancer because you didn't do your homework before reissuing older comics as digital reprints is unforgivable. I see the license ending up at IDW where they'll make a clean break with Archie's work because it's not worth the headaches reprinting or building upon. They'll probably just take the Sonic Boom stuff and make comics about it. Has dozens of characters and room to do unique stuff. The cartoon is actually okay for licensed standards; it's the games that suck.

24 years is a good run. The comics had their ups and downs, but it's kinda sad to see it go. I can't help but think this is mostly Penders's fault somehow.
Let's hope idw can get the license and do to Sonic what they did tmnt.

quite sad about this. Sure, it's most likely for the best and i didn't grow up reading the comics, since they only published 5 issues here. But i Remember going to a geocities site to see scanned pics of the comic. I'm excited to see what Sega of America has in store for a new Sonic comic.

IDW has carved out a pretty nice niche in terms of making licensed properties fresh and awesome, and also having a knack for knowing what authors worked well with a franchise beforehand and bringing them back in, i.e. bringing back Simon Furman and Larry Hama for Transformers and GI Joe, respectively.
I'm still kind of curious if this does end up being the definite final hurrah for all the SatAM-era characters, though I begrudgingly admit it probably will be for them as main characters. Short of an extremely narrow creative direction handed down by Sega, I can still see them wandering back in as supporting characters in whatever form the comics take next, especially if it ends up at IDW.

I'm only now reading about the lawsuits and man...what a shitshow. And there probably going to be more soon. The old writer, Ken Pender, think he can started rerelease old Knuckles comic without Archie/Sega approval now.

I've still got a bunch of those tucked away somewhere. Maybe now they will start being worth something.

I was like "there were Sonic comics?" Then I remembered I actually had some back in the 90s. I remember one called "Endgame" and Sonic was framed for a crime but I didn't have part 4 so I never found out what happened.

The only Sonic comic I knew was the British one but that was more of a Beano/2000 AD style comic except with Sega Franchises.
It was pretty cool

Archie's loss is IDW's gain: Sonic comics are heading to a new publisher in 2018.

Archie's loss is IDW's gain: Sonic comics are heading to a new publisher in 2018. So the comics will still be around, just under a new publisher. That I'm fine with.

Here's the real question: Will the rest of the Freedom Fighters show up? If not, I'm out.

We need the TMNT/Sonic crossover now, complete with wacky bonding by Sonic/Michelangelo, Knuckles/Raphael, Tails/Donatello, and Sally/Leonardo.

Yeah, like I said before, to me once we got past 1994 or so, Sega of Japan was always the worst thing to happen to whatever Sonic was doing. It's bad enough Archie never got to bring back the vintage "evil overlord" version of Robotnik, but If they take away the Freedom Fighters that'd kill what fleeting interest I still had in keeping up with whatever the comic was doing. I really hate that this stems from problems with Ken Penders, since Penders, to his credit, wrote some of the best stuff in the Sonic canon, namely the Knuckles line of comics that ran for a few years. Sega of America gave us a lot of good Sonic content in the 90s, Sega of Europe gave us Sonic the Comic which was pretty awesome in its own right, but I just wish they'd keep Sega of Japan away...which might be a big reason why I do look forward to Sonic Mania.

IDW are doing great things with their Licenced comics.
So the Sonic comics are probably in good hands.
and IDW did do things like bring in Kylie Griffith (Albeit a different version) from Extreme Ghostbusters into the comics universe among other things, so as long as there is no legal issues I'd expect them to work the other characters in at some point.
