I am not sure these 2 examples count, but I will throw out these names: Steve "Mongo" McMichael for fans of the Chicago Bears. The McGuire Twins: For kids and adults who read the Guinness Book of World Records in the 80s, you can't forget this photo. They even appeared in The Simpsons and Family Guy

Random 80s guys are known, surprisingly... at least their names. It's kind of weird... as popular as The Attitude Era was, no one today will recognize the name Billy Gunn or Droz or Al Snow or Val Venis... or even people like Mick Foley or HHH. But plenty of people will have heard of The Honkytonk Man or Koko B Ware or Hacksaw Jim Duggan, at least to the extent of knowing they're wrestlers.

From my experience, people with a limited knowledge of wrestling are at least aware of Rey Mysterio, Bret Hart, HHH, Dibiase and Undertaker.
Hogan, Flair, Savage, Cena, Rock, Lesnar, Piper, Andre, Goldberg and Austin would be the general public's "big ten".

A lot of lapsed fans can pick Jake the Snake and Ted DiBiase out of a line-up. Hacksaw Duggan, too. Good call on Duggan.

According to Jindar Mahal, The Great Khali is the most recognizable person on Earth. He...might not be entirely wrong on that. Between the fact that he's a giant and due to his condition has a really unique appearance with the massive chin for instance... not to mention he's been in a bunch of Hollywood movies.

I'm thinking more "B-level celebrity in a country of 1.2 billion people"

Koko B. Ware
Pretty much anybody that was a fan of wrestling in the 80s seems to know him, or at least remembers the Bird Man.

Whether anyone else will admit it or not, Triple H is very well known beyond wrestling. A good number of the Attitude Era top guys are still well known because wrestling was everywhere in pop culture in the late 90s and early 00s. Austin, Rock, obviously, but also Triple H, Undertaker, even Kane.

He's my favourite of all time, but I must admit I was surprised that Randy Savage's passing made the front page of BBC news website.

Another I think is Raven. Along with Flair and Foley, didnt he get "votes" for Time magazines person of the century?

People underestimate how well known Sgt. Slaughter is. Not just for GI Joe, he was pretty much a household name in the 80s. Slaughter was just as popular as Hogan for a time. Booked differently, WrestleMania 7 could have been a dream match.

Savage is the big one ive noticed where fans that don't f*** with wrestling at ALL know who he is because he seems to have this cult-following thing.

I know it's a bit of a joke because of the way he sees himself, but Bret Hart is definitely a recognisable dude in the UK Kendo Nagasaki and Adrian Street are recognised names too
And Gorgeous George it goes without saying is a big mainstream name

With Flair's Cavs cheerleading lately and the mentions he gets in hip-hop, non-fans are probably aware of a crazy blonde guy in a robe that whooos a lot.
