Title had to be short to fit, but I'll explain better here:
I was watching a video that gave the overview of the G1 Transformers cartoon, and the person doing it had an interesting thought: what if instead of one of the new characters we got for the movie, one of the pre-movie characters had become the new Prime and led the way. You could still get a new toy out there, but you would also have had a better connection with the series because it was a character you knew gaining a new position.
The example the guy gave was Bumblebee (though he admits not thinking of a good name for a Prime version of him), and I kinda agree with that: you still get the "young leader not sure of himself" thing that you had with Rodimus, but with a character that we knew. Plus, there was still the connection with Spike, and you wouldn't lose Hot Rod and his connection with Daniel (and thus less Wheelie on the show).
What say you though, FAN?

Could have been interesting. Had they developed Ratchet in the show the way they did in the comic, I could see him getting that nod. The compassionate one wanting to save as much life as possible but also ready to stand against anything no matter how much more powerful it was than him.

I always loved how Ratchet became the unsung hero in the comics, as he was one of my favorites (behind Bee and Optimus), and had one of the most interesting character arcs in the series. I also remember being absolutely horrified when he was fused together with Megatron.

Ironhide. Assumimg they don't just kill him off in the first few minutes in this version.
I wasn't even really a big fan of the character, but grizzled soldier becomes leader would be interesting.

Ironus Prime would definitely be an interesting take. I was thinking of him as well. I know that Prowl was always considered Prime's right hand man, but I think they had his personality laid out that he was such a control freak and so standoffish, he wouldn't be able to handle a leadership position where he'd have to adjust to changes and defeats on the fly and have to control the troops.

The Bumblebee idea of course has been/is being used on the Robots in Disguise series. Now, if they tried it in G1...would he upgrade from a VW bug to a Volkswagon van?

Bumblebee would become Bumbumus Prime.
Others would be Jazzamus Prime, Huffamus Prime, Trailbreakamus Prime. Hell, we could've had Omegamus Supremamus Prime.

I wouldn't want it. I don't care how much people hate on him, Rodimus Prime was f***ing awesome.

Well, one thing I was thinking about.
Naming wise, they wouldn't have to follow the Hot Rod to Rodimus Prime convention. I mean remember Optimus was Orion Pax.

Either way, I'd keep Galvatron. Much better overall than Megatron. The ep "Webworld" where he goes to some psychiatry planet was a brilliant episode. Kind of a dark ending for the time as well.

I'd nominate Grimlock if not for the fact that he was portrayed as a comic relief character with limited intelligence. If they could give him the ruthless, intelligent, almost Decepticon-like characterisation he had in the comics it would've made for a very different kind of story arc compared to Optimus and Rodimus.

As a kid, Bumblebee was my favorite Autobot, so I would have loved to see him take over as leader. Maybe he could have been Goldbug Prime or something.
On a side note, I actually preferred Rodimus Prime to Optimus Prime as a kid. It's funny how my tastes have changed. Rewatching the series as an adult, I appreciate Optimus Prime a lot more and can't really accept anyone else as Autobot leader. Similarly, I hated Megatron as a kid and wanted Starscream to lead the Decepticons, but now I find myself loving Megatron more. Bumblebee has even been supplanted as my favorite Autobot by Tracks and Powerglide. But, I digress.

Huffer carried Prime's trailer in one episode. As for Rodimus, it wasn't only how he was written in season 3....but also in some eps, Ultra Magnus did seem to have the leading role indeed. I think Rodimus wasn't even in some at all.

If he had been written like in the comic, Blaster would have been a good choice.

If he had been written like in the comic, Blaster would have been a good choice. For those of us who have never gotten around to reading it, how was he written in the comic? Also if he had been leader, we might have had a GOOD fight between him and Soundwave (first one was G1 goofy even with the awesome Soundwave line of "Less talk, more shock" and the Headmasters one was lackluster).

In some European markets with the toys they mistakenly made Jetfire the leader of the Autobots. I want to say because in robot mode Jetfire was the biggest Autobot in the toyline.. but then Omega Supreme would have been bigger
They corrected that when the cartoon was released.
