Episode 580: "A Battle In The Heat! Luffy vs. The Giant Dragon!"
Hey, title writer! The others are fighting as well! How rude!
Anyhow, this fight, that takes up the majority of the episode's runtime, is pretty good. Unlike the villain in the filler 4-parter, I have no qualms if beasts are able to fight on par with Luffy and give him a hard time. Especially, if it is actually shown that Luffy's attacks stun the dragon and it is established that his thick scales are the reason why Luffy's attacks don't have as much effect. Just give me these simple reasons and I won't have any problem with the equalness in the fight unlike it was with Shuzo.
The fight also provides a mystery in whether the dragon can talk or not, mentioning the Seven Warlords among other things (and adding strange -bu sounds for some odd reason). What could that mean? Anyway, after a pretty fine combination attack involving all of Luffy's group, they manage to decapitate the dragon. I wonder how that will proceed (especially with the person stuck in the dragon that they found).
Meanwhile, the group on the Sunny gets put to sleep by some strange people in hazmat suits (causing Sanji to drop a plate of crepes he made. Oh boy, will he give them a kicking when he finds out) and are being taken to someone called the Master. Who is that dude?
A good episode to see here.
Manga Differences: -Just like last episode, anytime a reference is made to the clam Sanji prepares in the anime, in the manga it referred to the deep sea fish they brought above. -All scenes aboard the Sunny until Sanji goes outside to serve the clam crepe he made (including the eerie arrival of the Hazmat guys and Sanji preparing the dish inside) are anime-only scenes. They do not happen in the manga. -The usual scene extensions.
Mata ashita, yarodomo!

Episode 581: "The Straw Hats Stunned! Enter: A Samurai's Horrifying Severed Head!"
Well, I always reckoned that Samurai went headless into battle disregarding their lives but this is just silly.
Though not as silly as the Luffy group finding legs without a torso or a head who can speak regardless (though cannot see or hear anything but can sense a person's aura apparently). It is fun though seeing everyone's reaction to this strange phenomenon and Luffy's childlike joy at seeing anything out of the ordinary is always a hoot to watch. And of course, Luffy wants to recruit these legs as a companian but has to satisfy himself by attaching them to himself and becoming a centaur...sort of. While further exploring, we learn two things: 1) Punk Hazard has its other half covered in arctic temperatures with ice mountains and snow for some reason and 2) Half-human, half-animal beings seems to inhabit this island as shown by a panther centaur that first fights and then befriends Luffy and a...harpy woman? Odd island, indeed.
Meanwhile, the Sunny group (sans Brook who again gets mistaken for a corpse. Lucky him, they should use him for reconnaissance missions more often probably) are taken in as prisoners and shown to the Master (who is a smoke cloud for some reason, has an interesting laugh...and somehow that voice sounds very familiar) before getting thrown into a room. There they meet the titular severed head who can talk for some reason (love that the Straw Hats are pretty non-chalant when the head is in several pieces and only get freaked out when they put it together and realise it is a severed head). Given his way of speaking, he is probably the samurai that the distress call was talking about...but why is he so torsoless? Wait, legs without a torso and a head without a body? Could that mean...?
A good and entertaining episode again.
Manga Differences: -Luffy's chase of the legs is a lot longer in the anime compared to the manga. After the legs run off in the manga, the next time we go to the Luffy group, Luffy is already enjoying his new centaur form (the manga also implies that he purposely put them on, while the anime portrays it as an accident). -Every scene with the Sunny group before they awake in the cell room is filler material (them getting taken away by the hazmat guys, the master getting reported on, the master looking over them etc.). -Brook awakening on the Sunny and getting engaged by the hazmat guys is also anime-added content. We don't see Brook again until much later after he already has regained control of the Sunny. -Luffy encountering the panther centaur and first fighting, then befriending him is also anime-only. Originally, we see only the part where he has already befriended the centaur (without any dialogue) from the point of view of the other members of Luffy's group. -The usual scene extensions.
Until 'morrow!

Episode 582: "Startling! The Secret Of The Island Is Finally Revealed!" The secret is...it is really the island hosting the Home For Peculiar Children! The producers should sue Tim Burton!...Then again, the book the movie was based on debuted in 2011, so move along. The Sanji group has more fun with the severed head who would feel right at home in a Republican America given his views on women (although it leads to some funny exchanges between Nami and him regarding her "breast cloth") and, as it turns out, he is actually the samurai mentioned in the distress call. Contrary to that description, he is not a merciless killer but has actually a reason for being on this island: to rescue his son. Apparently, his conviction inspires Sanji so much that he takes the samurai head with him after they manage to open the cell with his mighty beam (seriously, Chopper's adorable reaction to that never fails to get a smile from me). While fleeing they come into a room where they find...children playing? And some of those children are freaking huge! The hell? On the Luffy side, we sadly have to say goodbye to the budding friendship between Luffy and the panther centaur due to the latter being finally updated that the childishly happy guy he met is actually one of the intruders. However, him and his companion (a giraffe-centaur) are mere grunts and prove no match to Luffy and his crew. After an update from Brook regarding the current situation (and Robin casually no-selling Brook's asking to see his underwear I guess Brook prefers this refusal compared to Nami's outbursts), this group now decides to cross the sea to the icy lands in order to rescue their friends. Finally, during a scene with the G-5 marines, Smoker exposits about why Punk Hazard is the way it is: apparently Admirals Aokiji and Akainu had such a super-heated and cool battle that they broke the weather fabric of the island with their devil fruit powers, causing the island to be fire and ice at the same time. Interesting. Another good and funny episode. Manga Differences: -Luffy and the panther centaur having a gay old time together is all filler until the latter starts his attack on Luffy. The attack is where this scene in the manga sets in. -The flashback to how Brook defeated the hazmat guys with his notch slash (nice that they show this attack again) is also anime-added content. In the manga, we never get to see how Brook defeated them. In fact, Brook contacting the Luffy Group is the first time we see him in the manga again after he was put to sleep. -Otherwise, it is just the usual scene extensions. Later days!

Episode 583: "Save The Children! The Straw Hats Start To Fight!"
Won't somebody please think of the children?!
So we finally get some interaction with the children and, of course, Franky and Chopper prove to be really popular with boys and girls (Sanji less so, when the only interesting feature for kids are his swirly eyebrows). It is so sweet to see those children so happy and giddy when meeting the Straw Hats. But good times cannot last when the Hazmat guys appear and the Straw Hats have to flee. Things take a turn around, however, when the children beg them to save them (including a rather creepy scene where one of the bigger girls looks around and everything turns grey and you only hear the breathing of the hazmat guys) and Nami, probably inspired by what Bellemere did for her when she was a child (thankfully without a flashback this time to hammer this point home), decides to save them, much to the chagrin of Sanji (where I kinda think that his behaviour towards the children is based on how Zeff treated him as a kid). And now the Straw Hats are gonna fight back against their captors.
Meanwhile, the Luffy group prepares to cross the lake, thanks to Usopp's Pop Greens providing a boat and paddles (which is preceded by a really cute imagine spot where Robin imagines her and Luffy being carried over by Zoro and Usopp on their backs since they are devil fruit users and all...seriously, for how dark her thoughts are sometimes, she has some adorable ones from time to time as well). I don't know if I should think it funny for how little respect Usopp gets for his help but anyway, danger awaits them on the other short in person of the Boss mentioned in the distress call.
Finally, Brook is minding his own business when he is suddenly attacked by a torso...WTF (OK at this point we can guess to whom this one belongs)?
Another good episode.
Manga Differences: -The Straw Hats spending some time with the children is a lot longer in the anime compared to the manga. After the initial reaction to seeing Franky and Chopper, we immediately go to the severed samurai head screaming for Momonosuke, scaring them away in the manga. -That creepy scene mentioned above also does not appear in the manga. -Brook building snowmen in the anime is also anime-added content. When we see him the next time (following the call with the Luffy group), he is already in the fight with the torso. -The usual scene extensions.
Let us meet again the day following today!

Episode 584: "A Swordplay Showdown! Brook vs. The Mysterious Torso Samurai!"
Well, mysterious is a bit exaggerated considering that we know who this torso belongs to.
This is an episode that shows the various fronts but ultimately develops only one track really:
-In the titular confrontation, Brook has a decent fight with the samurai torso. Nothing spectacular but good to watch. Gotta love Brook's confused reactions during this battle, thinking that this is perhaps a ghost and ultimately seeking his luck in running away. -We learn that the Boss is Brownbeard, a pirate we last saw during the exploits of the 11 supernovas in the New World when he was engaged by Basil Hawkins, and now seems to work on this island. He also has become a centaur for some reason (when the last time we saw him, he had normal legs). I like Usopp's try to diffuse the situation (drawing Zoro's anger in the process) but it all for naught as Brownbeard and his centaur squadron attack. -Nami and Chopper continue leading the children out of the facility while Franky and Sanji continue getting rid of the hazmat guys in overwhelming fashion. After ripping off their masks, we see that some of them have sheep horns and hair for some reason (Merry's [Miss Kaya's faithful attendant] long-lost relatives, the black sheep of the family so to speak?).
-In the most developed part in this episode, Smoker, Tashigi and his G-5 squadron manage their way to the inner sanctum of the island. Have to say that I adore Smoker for not taking any shit from his subordinates which is probably why they have no problem in adhering to his orders (and also following Tashigi's orders, for different reason obviously). When they finally reach the entrance, they are greeted by none other than...Trafalgar Law of whom we learn that he has become one of the Seven Warlords in the past two years (after an incident where he sent the hearts of 100 pirates to the marines...creepy. And they were still pulsating, too...and the cloth bags were surprisingly clean for containing heards). And so Smoker and Law are at a stand-off...what will the next episode bring?
Another good episode.
Manga Differences: -Usopp's try at diffusing the situation by talking is an anime-only invention. Originally, we immediately go to Brownbeard and his crew attacking them. -The discussion between the Master and his subordinate is a lot longer in the anime, ending with anime-only content of Law asking if he should greet the marines. We first see Law in the manga when he opens the door to the marines. -The build-up to Smoker firing at the hidden entrance to the river is also anime filler. The manga sets in after they have bombed away the iceberg. -The whole landing at the inner sanctum with them realizing that they don't need gas masks is also anime-added content. After the travel through the river, the next time we see them they are already at the door demanding entrance. -The usual scene extensions.
Until 'morrow, laddies!

Episode 585: "The Warlord! Trafalgar Law!" Next time, you need to think your lies through better, Law. Just like the last episode, we go through several different set pieces: -At the lake, Luffy and his group have a hard time landing due to the barrage of cannon fire by Brownbeard and his squadron. Have to say that Brownbeard is not quite a big dummy by doing the most reasonable thing upon learning that two of the enemies are Devil Fruit users: Shoot the water around them to cause them to capsize. And it appears to be a success, putting the Luffy group at a serious disadvantage where they don't know how to escape this predicament. Will be interesting to see how they get out of that pickle. -Brook has meanwhile broken a world record or two in running, but then he hears something...which is only the samurai torso rolling down in a snowball into the lake. Have to say that was pretty hilarious. -Having gotten rid of the hazmat guys, Sanji and Franky go to join Nami and Chopper fleeing with the children. After some interaction (where we learn that the kids' parents apparently never told them the simple rule 'DON'T TALK TO STRANGERS!" so its the parents at fault here as well) and some humorous moments (Chopper getting squashed by the children after telling them to get on his back, Chopper taking the kids explanation at face value), they enter a creepy area where prisoners (given their striped uniforms) are frozen stiff for some reason. Cultivation? A refrigerator for a cannibal cult? Who knows? -Finally, Law and Smoker's talks are at an impasse...when suddenly the Nami and Sanji teams enter in a very funny moment (as highlighted by one G-5 marine's comment: "I don't even know where to start!") only to retreat after realizing whom they are facing. Having his cover blown that there is nobody here except him, Law decides to fight the marines...and him hauling their ship out of the water is proof that he is not somebody to mess with easily. Another good episode in a row of them. Manga Differences: -The whole scene with Brook in this ep is anime filler. We don't see him again until he arrives at the lake. -The scene with Nami and Chopper and the kids running towards the exit had some additional content added to the anime (like Chopper getting squashed by the kids wanting to ride him) that was not there in the manga. -The scene with Luffy's group at the lake was also very extended. In the manga, Brownbeard and his group were immediately successful in capsizing their boat while we get this long detailed sequence in the anime including how Brownbeard comes up with changing his strategy for defeating them. -The usual scene extensions. Tomorrow will be another day to meet again.

Episode 586: "In A Real Pinch! Luffy Sinks Into The Ice-Cold Lake!" But only for about 5 seconds before Zoro rescued him. The fight at the lake draws to a close with Brownbeard actually managing to capsize the boat (after a hilarious exchange where nobody of the Strawhats has ever heard of Brownbeard, causing him to have a Foxy moment) but luckily Brook arrives in time to turn the battle in the Straw Hats favour (I wonder if Usopp ever realized what a lucky bastard he is, carrying Robin like that. Sanji would probably kill him if he ever found out). And so the Straw Hats arrive on safe ground...and commence their counterattack in funny fashion...which is apropos considering they do target the attackers' winter clothes (only feel sorry for the cutie that Robin steals the clothes from. I hope she gets something warm again soon). Guess that's it for Luffy's group being in a pinch. At the Law vs. Marines showdown on the other hand, we get to see the Marines...stare in fascination for a long time while Law creates a monument out of ice and the remnants of their ship. Law's powers are certainly impressive but they don't really warrant drawn-out sequences where nothing essentially happens. Although Law does make something intriguing happen...he manages to switch the Straw Hats' personalities around leading to: -Nami into Franky's body -Sanji into Nami's body -Chopper into Sanji's body -Franky into Chopper's body ...with the predictable hilarious results (although Sanji appears to like his new body). Certainly an interesting twist, looking forward to see how this ends. Speaking of ending, the episode finishes with Tashigi doing a desperate attack on Law...but he manages to slice her and her sword in two. Poor Tashigi. More of a decent episode really because of the long drawn-out "Look how impressive Law's power is" sequences. Manga Differences: -The whole exchange about the Straw Hats not knowing who Brownbeard is is an anime-only addition. As mentioned previously, the squadron managed to sink the ship at the first try in the manga. -After the Straw Hats get their devilish looks, that scene already ends in the manga. The anime extends this scene by showing the Straw Hats attack on the Brownbeard squadron. -The long extended scene of Law showing his powers including creating that sculpture is anime filler. Originally after he lifts the ship out of the water, we get a scene change, and when we come back, he had already finished that sculpture in the manga. -The usual scene extensions. Tomorrow will be a break for Manga Volume 69 (dudes!) so see you on Friday!

Episode 587: "A Collision! Law vs. Vice Admiral Smoker!"
And what a collision it is!
No really, this is actually a really good fight and well animated. Smoker shows that he did not slack off in the two years since coming to the new world either and proves an equal opponent to Law and his operating powers. The Smoke-Smoke Fruit gives him an advantage in providing him with a gaseous form that is not easy for Law to manipulate and his trusty jitte (a sort of Edo-era baton he always carries embedded with sea prism stone) proves a quite handy weapon that Law cannot easily manipulate. After a lengthy, awesome fight, however, Law manages to defeat Smoker by going....all Mola Ram on him and taking out his (still beating...creepy) heart? What...the...hell? His operation powers might be even greater than I thought.
Since the fight takes up most of the episode's runtime, we only get a few other location shots. We get more hilarious scenes with the personality-swapped Straw Hats (where only Sanji seems to have the time of his life being in Nami's body, much to her chagrin) and the kids' confused reactions to it. Meanwhile, Luffy and his group are using Brownbeard as their personal vehicle to get to the facility that has more funny scenes (including Robin again having some gruesome thoughts about what might have happened to their friends)..
Ultimately, we meet the harpy woman for real in a talk with the Master (her name is Monet by the way...does she paint in her free time? And what's with those coke bottle glasses) where they also allude to someone named Joker. Who is that? We are not doing a crossover with Batman right?
A very good episode this time due to the awesome Law/Smoker fight.
Manga Differences: -The scene with Brownbeard's squadron after having their clothes robbed by the Straw Hats is anime-only filler. We don't see them again until much later. -The usual scene extensions otherwise.
Let us meet again the day following today!

Episode 588: "Meeting Again After Two Years! Luffy And Law!" Dammit, Smoker and Sanji! You will be giving Tashigi and Nami lung cancer that way! As the episode title suggests, Luffy finally meets Law again and gives him his thanks for two years ago. Thinking about it, this is something that Luffy probably only heard about from Jinbei and Rayleigh since he was psychologically distraught for most of it and when Jinbei helped him to snap out of it, Law was already gone. Safe to say that Luffy is way more enthusiastic about meeting Law than the latter is (though kudos to Luffy for not having any hard feelings at Law for it. Blessed be his childlike innocence). Before they depart, Law switches Smoker's and Tashigi's personalities around for...some reason. Meanwhile, speaking of personality swaps, we have lots of fun (well, we, the viewers at least) coming to grips with their personality swaps leading to all sorts of hilarity (especially Nami in Franky's body getting majorly pissed off about Sanji in her body having the time of his life in there). We also learn that the Samurai has eated a devil fruit that has given him the power to...create clothes out of everything apparently. That's a really odd devil fruit power to say the least (and the reason he has not shown this power until now is also pretty funny ). Finally, the Luffy group meets up with the Sanji group leading to more fun moments (Luffy and Usopp's reactions to the other's predicaments, Luffy's sadness over losing his hind legs to the samurai, the samurai revealing that the reason he could communicate with his leg part was by farting [Terrance and Philipp would probably really like this guy], Nami finding a solution to counter Sanji abusing her body by charging him for it) and we lastly go to the Marines where they are also coming to grips with the personality swap of Tashigi and Smoker. We end the ep on finally getting the name of (probably) the major antagonist of this arc - Caesar Clown, a scientist, who is that sentient puff of smoke we have seen previously. Hopefully, he will be a challenge. A good episode here. Manga Differences: -Only the usual scene extensions that were notable to me. Until 'morrow!

Episode 589: "The Worst In The World! A Scientist Of Terror - Caesar!"
If ever there was a guy that was worthy of the moniker "Mad Scientist"...
This episode is mostly an introduction to Caesar Clown, the main antagonist of this arc, and he definitely is pretty loco in the coco. Helps that his VA is Ryusei Nakao who already had previous experience in voicing such a deranged mad scientist in Kurotsuchi Mayuri in "Bleach" (and who is best well-known for voicing Freezer in the various Dragonball incarnations). In both discussions, one with the Marines and one with the Straw Hats questioning the captured Brownbeard, we learn most of Clown's backstory:
-He was No.2 in the Marine Facility on Punk Hazard (a place that would have surely appealed to Nazis everywhere with its experimentation on prisoners and everything) when an experiment by Dr. Vegapunk went awry and caused the whole beautiful island to become a toxic wasteland. -He helped the prisoners left to cruelly die of toxic gas on the island and gave them means to walk after the gas made them paraplegic (geez, that's pretty dark). -Brownbeard especially describes him and Law in glowing terms about how they helped him after he got defeated by Basil Hawkins (we remember two years ago that that was the last time we saw Brownbeard) and how Law turned them into the centaur beings they are today (though I cannot help but feel sorry for the poor animals that had to give their legs to them). -According to Smoker, he is actually a wanted criminal for his unusual methods and they have been searching for him for quite a while.
We also get to see his true colors by offering help to one of the Brownbeard squadron who got beaten by Luffy but instead using him to test a new poison gas and, after the experiment is a failure, killing him in cold blood. Damn, he is definitely one bad egg.
We also get some info about how child disappearances happen in this area of the ocean frequently but they might be covered up by someone in the Marines which explains why the children have been here so long without any investigation by the marines. Intriguing.
All in all, another good episode mostly for the background infos we get on Caesar.
Manga Differences: -Mostly the usual scene extensions as usual that stuck out to me.
Let us meet the day that follows today again!

Episode 590: "History's Strongest Collaboration vs. Glutton Of The Sea!"
Luffy's crossover friend is here! And Goku's there, too!
Yeah, it is another collaboration episode with Toriko except this time, they also throw Goku from the Dragonball franchise into the mix. And again this is the second part of the collaboration special since the first part is part of the Toriko anime series (sadly for Goku he does not get a third part to make it also tie in the Dragonball Super series). Finally, like all the previous ones, this takes place mostly in the Toriko world.
I had more fun with this than the last two collabs, mainly because I actually know Dragonball (was the first anime and manga I was a big fan of) so I am more familiar with those characters and having more fun with them interacting with the Straw Hats than I had with the Toriko crew. And hey, the fight against the glutton with all three Shonen Jump protagonists is a sight to behold with them going all out with their special attacks (Genkidama, Nail Punch, Elephant Gun) but so are the quiet moments where the characters from all three franchises just sit around and eat together (especially the three protagonists who would have probably eaten all the meat if given the chance). The episode had some good funny moments like how Franky casually got his energy stolen by the glutton, the final shot of Zoro, Zebra and Vegeta having seemingly fighting this entire time etc..
All in all, I'd say it was a fun diversion from the main story this time around and a good episode.
Manga Differences: -Filla Head-Filla....
See you tomorrow, laddies!

Episode 591: "Chopper's Fury! The Master's Inhumane Experiment!"
And that's why you should never take candy from strangers...
After a long time, its new opening time!
At first, I don't get the same elated feeling I had with the last opening. But this is still a good one with nice music, energetic and beautiful picture composition and a nice overview of the participants in the current arc. While not a Top 5 Opening by any means, I have no qualms with it.
The main focus of this episode is pretty disturbing. Chopper finds out that the kids have been digesting a highly addictive drug and now they suffer from withdrawal symptoms. It is really creepy and unnerving how the animators pull no punches in showing the kids' all too real reactions from not having their fix at the moment (with some long drawn-out close-ups of their suffering) and their lashing out at the Straw Hats when they won't fetch the candy for them. It is very disturbing due to, most of all, them being little kids and them having to suffer such a cruel fate at that age which is the most potent reason why Chopper is so pissed off about what the Master is doing to them and why he is so fervent in wanting to help them.
Besides that pretty serious topic, we also get some light-hearted moments, the most hilarious one being the two times that Robin admonishes Franky in Chopper's body to stop pulling those creepy faces (guess she cannot stand Chopper being anything less than cute). But other moments like Sanji and Zoro's bickering when they go with Brook after the samurai in search of his torso or Nami's reaction to Brook's and Sanji in Nami's body's elation at going together.
But danger is afoot for the Straw Hats with an assassin duo named the...Yeti Cool Brothers? And they have already taken out Zoro, Sanji in Nami's body and Brook? WTF?
A good episode again.
Manga Differences: -Franky accidentally activating Chopper's Guard Boost and the kids having fun with it is a anime-only moment that does not happen in the manga. -Brook's, Franky-in-Chopper's body and Chopper in Sanji's body's overwhelming positive reactions to the Master after hearing Brownbeard's tale is also anime-added content that wasn't in the manga. -Otherwise, the usual scene extensions.
Tomorrow we'll see each other again!

Episode 592: "To Annihilate The Straw Hats! Legendary Assassins Descend!"
Come on, Brownbeard! You could have at least told us what kind of women they like, what their shoe size is etc....
Most of the episode deals with the two assassins, the Yeti Cool Brothers, attacking the Straw Hats hideout. They actually appear like pretty capable assassins, talking in a calm, "cool" manner and are pretty effective in storming the hideout without getting hurt themselves. In doing so, they also kill Brownbeard as per the Master's order (but not before shaking Brownbeard's entire worldview by revealing that the Master really gave that order to assassinate him) and kidnap Nami in Franky's body because they are actually interested in the technology behind his beam laser.
That's about it regarding the main part of the episode. We also get more details about how Law and Caesar came to work together (although we do not know Law's true motives yet...as shown when he slice some of Caesar's henchmen for no reason at the end) and some more fun moments: Robin again admonishing Franky in Chopper's body to be quiet (seriously, I am afraid if Franky continues like this she will crush his nads again), Brownbeard claiming not to know anything about the Yeti Cool Brothers and then essentially telling their whole life story and Nami completely failing at reproducing Franky's beam.
So now, Luffy has to go rescue Nami but can he succeed when they already took out Zoro, Sanji in Nami's body and Brook? We shall see.
Another good episode.
Manga Differences: -The discussion between the Straw Hats at the beginning is anime-only material. Originally, they immediately go after Chopper in Sanji's body and Nami in Franky's body say that they will stay behind to take care of the children. -Brownbeard's flashbacks to his interactions with the Master and Law are also anime-added content that wasn't there in the manga. -After Brownbeard is killed, we never see them actually kidnap Nami in Franky's body in the manga whereas we see it in the anime. -The scene with the Marines descending to attack the front of Caesar's laboratory again is anime filler that wasn't there in the manga. -Otherwise the usual scene extensions.
See you all...later today!

Episode 593: "Save Nami! Luffy's Fight On The Snow-Capped Mountains!"
I guess Rock is just too "cool" to wear a gas mask like his brother Scotch.
Most of this episode deals with Luffy's fight against the Yeti Cool Brothers...mostly hampered by Franky in Chopper's body having swallowed a Rumble Ball and becoming an uncontrollable giant (due to not having the same experience with this form as Chopper has). Still, the fight is pretty good since the Brothers' quick movements make for a pretty difficult fight for Luffy. We also learn that Luffy has mastered a better use of his Gum-Gum Balloon form by using it not for simply bouncing objects off of him but to deflect them with twice the power which comes in handy against those animes. After Franky in Chopper's body gets rid of one of them, the other flees...but is stopped by Law who quickly takes him out. And then out of nowhere, Law asks Luffy to form an alliance with him to take out one of the Four Emperors....the hell?
Other than the fight, we get some fun moments again like the Yeti Cool Brothers thinking Franky is queer (due to Nami saying all the stuff about her delicate body and stuff), Nami's reaction to the fight as well as Chopper in Sanji's body's reaction to Chopper in Franky's body swallowing the Ball prematurely. I also liked that until the very end we never see the Yeti Cool Brothers's faces, just a neat detail I liked.
Finally, Caesar has ordered a patrol unit to open up a door on the island where something lurks...what could that be? And will it mean danger to the Straw Hats?
Another good episode.
Manga Differences: -Caesar discussing with Monet about testing something and the scene with the centaur patrol opening the door is all anime filler. In the manga we only see the aftermath of this story thread. -The whole scene with the Marines (Smoker, Tashigi and the remaining soldiers supporting the group that was tasked with stealing a ship) is also an anime-only scene that was not in the manga. We only see the Marines in the Manga again when they are already in the midst of this battle. -Otherwise, the usual scene extensions.
Until...later today (for real, I promise).

Episode 594: "Formed! Luffy And Law's Pirate Alliance!" Smiley is missing something...like some kind of catchy song, maybe? *sings* Nothing can stop...Smiley! This episode is a bit more quiet than the previous ones, mostly dealing with the titular forming of the alliance between Luffy and Law. I loved that Luffy (whether intentional or not) brings his crew on board with this alliance by mentioning that with their progress in the past two years that they can do everything, flattering even Nami into going along with this plan that involves kidnapping Caesar Clown for now. This was really an enjoyable scene with many fun moments, most of all Law's perplexed reaction to the Straw Hats' antics (and why I do still feel a hint of threat when Robin mentions that Franky should never again go into Chopper's body. Like she will really crush his nads if he does do it again). At least most of the Straw Hats get back in their original bodies...except for Nami since Sanji in Nami's body has run off after the Samurai. Poor Nami. Meanwhile, Caesar's patrol has released something...a big Jello-like substance that emits poison gas that Caesar calls Smiley. Meh, he's no Smooze that's for sure. But we shall see what this creature will be all about. This scene also shows how dispensable Caesar treats his subjects, sending the patrol on essentially a suicide mission that causes them all to die and not reacting to their transmissions. Caesar Clown is on a good way to make it to the Top 5 of biggest OP assholes (including what he did to the children). All in all, another good episode again. Manga Differences: -As mentioned previously, all the scenes with the patrol releasing Smiley until we see the two remaining members running away downhill is anime-filler. -The Marines vs. Caesar Clown's centaur patrol including the naming of several prisoners presumed to be dead among the centaurs is also anime-only content. The manga content starts a little before Luffy's arrival at the battlefield (which will be next episode probably). -The usual scene extensions. Until 'morrow!

Episode 595: "Capture M! The Pirate Alliance's Operation Launches!"
And already it appears to be a bust given Law's reaction.
The first part focuses mostly on what really happened to Zoro, Sanji in Nami's body and Brook whom we assumed to have been killed by the Yeti Cool Brothers. Turns out that the Brothers need to go back to assassin school and learn to actually check on whether their target is really dead which they didn't do in this case (though I do like their ammunition which turns you drunk instantly). Gotta love the three Straw Hats' enthusiasm for Yeti hunting and their differing views on what the Yeti actually looks like. They also come across the samurai again who starts to warm up to the Straw Hats after disliking them at first upon learning that they are pirates. I love how him and Sanji seem to have a nice chemistry going along. But things might be not as good as they seem when they learn that Smiley has appeared at the lake (where the Samurai's upper body is). I hope they'll succeed.
Meanwhile, at the front of the research facility, the Marines and Caesar's centaur patrol are still fighting when Luffy makes an unexpected entrance (using one of Franky's old techniques we have not seen in a while, Coup De Poo), much to Law's chagrin. We also learn that there is a reason why Law cannot catch Caesar himself despite having such a useful devil fruit power. I wonder what that is.... And it was adorable how Tashigi in Smoker's body cannot control his devil fruit power, being unaccustomed to his Logia techniques. Let's see how this fight turns out.
Another good episode here.
Manga Differences: -The scene replay that happened before the three Straw Hats came across the footprints did not happen in the manga. -The discussion between Luffy, Franky and Robin about how to get to the entrance is anime-only content. When we see them next in the manga, it is already them arriving at the entrance via Coup De Poo. -The usual scene extensions.
Until 'morrow!

Episode 596: "On The Verge Of Annihilation! A Deadly Monster Comes Flying In!"
Or rather dropping in...
Most of this episode is focused on the fight between the Straw Hats (namely Luffy, Robin and Franky) against the centaur patrol and the Marines. Nothing particularly notable happens in this part except for Luffy's reaction to Smoker and Tashigi's body change (of course, he finds it hilarious) but it is good to see that Luffy has a pretty easy time being around Smoker (goes to show that him and Coby are probably the only marines that Luffy respects and would not mind getting captured by). More notable is the appearance of Smiley on the battlefield with it shooting parts of itself across the lake due to it being weak to water. Smiley appears to be a tough creature to deal with as it cannot be touched, emits poison gas when cut...and explodes upon contact with fire as the Marine soldiers who managed to get a ship so tragically came to find out. Things get me interesting as Caesar makes an appearance on the battlefield with Luffy taking no time in capturing him (though Luffy...just like in Pokemon, you have to weaken him first before capturing him).
Otherwise nothing much happens. Nami in Sanji's body and Usopp have some trouble keeping the children at bay, the group of Sanji in Nami's body, Zoro and Brook fascinatingly witness Smiley shooting itself across the lake and Law and Chopper enter the lab. Nothing really notable.
A decent episode only this time around.
Manga Differences: -The whole part in the Straw Hats' hideout is complete anime filler. We don't see that hideout again until later in the manga when Caesar Clown appears there. -The usual scene extensions here.
Until...later today! (I should now be ready to catch up without any further problems now.)

Episode 597: "An Intense Battle! Caesar Exercises His True Power!"
And his true power is activated through the continued digestion of Lima beans!
Joke's aside, we get the first sparring between Luffy and Caesar in this episode and it is quite a good one. Caesar's gaseous form is quite difficult to grab for Luffy (bringing up a good point regarding one weakness of the Armament Haki: while it allows one to attack a Logia-type devil fruit user, it does not drain him of his power like sea water or a sea prism stone does, thus, only working for short attacks and not capturing the target) and he manages to use different types of gases expertly like poison gas and flammable gas (the latter for his Gastanet attack using a castagnette which I found funny for some reason). However, Luffy is no slouch either proving himself to be immune to Caesar's poison gas (like Hyozo's poison in the Fishman Island Arc, it does not affect Luffy due to him having grown immune thanks to his immersion in Magellan's poison) and using his speed to gain a few hits on Caesar. Ultimately, however, Caesar does something that not only causes Luffy to fall unconscious in a pretty horrifying manner but it also knocks out Robin, Franky, Smoker and Tashigi, leaving us to question what he did exactly.
In another segment of the episode, Sanji in Nami's body gets into the lake to rescue the Samurai's torso before the lake gets completely poisoned by the Smiley parts that have dropped into the lake. Nothing much to say here.
Finally, a stranger enters the area who appears to know Law (who, for some reason, has developed some kind of illness. Did he forget to take some medicine that day?). Who could that be?
A good episode again.
Manga Differences: -We actually don't see in the manga how Caesar knocks out the Straw Hats and the two highest ranking marines. After Luffy's last strike at Caesar in the manga, we get a scene change and then it cuts to Luffy, Robin, Franky and Tashigi in Smoker's body on the ground while Caesar holds up Smoker in Tashigi's body in gloating mode. All the scenes with them getting knocked out in the manga is actually anime filler. -The usual scene extensions otherwise.
Let us meet again the day that follows today!

Episode 598: "A Samurai Who Can Cut Fire! Foxfire Kin'emon!"
I am sure every fire department would be thrilled to have a samurai like him.
Finally, the samurai is himself again after Sanji in Nami's body pulls off a daring rescue of his torso which is gleefully chewed on by a shark. Interesting that apparently Nami's different body proves no problem for Sanji to use his kick techniques which is handy allowing him to escape the lake before the poison reaches him. It is also kinda endearing to see the Samurai apologize to Sanji for disrespecting him while being just a head without a body, showing that he is quite an honorable character...I really start to like this samurai whom we learn is named Foxfire Kin'emon. And his technique is nothing short of impressive being able to slice things up and engulfing them in flames and being able to cut fire himself, enabling him to protect them from the Smiley explosions. I am looking forward to see this character moving forward.
Meanwhile, the person who took out Law is some guy named Vergo...who has a hamburger patty stuck on his face for some reason and who seems to know Law for a long time. We also learn that he has Law's heart which is the reason why Law is incapable of fighting back against him since having your heart squeezed must not feel so good. Also, Caesar has captured the Straw Hats and the highest ranking Marines and is now preparing to get back the children. Will he succeed with that?
Another good episode here.
Manga Differences: -Most of Zoro's and Brook's interactions while Sanji is underwater is anime filler. We only turn into the manga-related content from the moment Brook gets angry at Zoro's disrespect towards him. -The flashback to the various disrespectful bahaviour by Kin'emon in his beheaded form is also anime-only content. -Caesar instructing his henchmen to throw the captives into a cage and getting ready to take back the children is also anime-only content that is not shown in the manga. -The usual scene extensions otherwise.
Tomorrow will be a break for One Piece Manga Volume 70 so see you all on Thursday!

Episode 599: "Shocking! The True Identity Of The Mystery Man Vergo!"
As it turns out...the hamburger patty on his cheek IS Vergo! The human figure is just an attachment!
Joke aside, this is again an episode not so much focused on a single setting but showing various ones: -In the main part, the captured Straw Hats + Smoker, Tashigi and Law learn that Vergo, as the head of the Marine G-5 unit, covered up the children's abductions to bring new subjects for Caesar's experiments which especially shocks the two captured marines. Furthermore, we also learn that behind Joker is one of the Seven Warlords, Don Quichotte Doflamingo, a warlord that we have seen quite a lot over the course of the show (going all the way back to the Sky Island Arc, some 450 episodes ago) but of whom we don't really know much about. Perhaps we will now learn more about him. This scene is more about exposition but also features some fun exchanges (like Robin reminiscing about Alabasta which was the last time Luffy and Smoker were together in a cell).
-In another scene, we see the parents of the children desperately asking some G-5 marines to re-investigate the disappearances of their children, only for them to cold-heartedly refuse. This scene's main focus seems more about highlighting how much more trust-worthy Vergo appears compared to the other G-5 miscreants including Commander Yarisugi whose running gag seems to be that everything is too much. The G-5 soldiers we see here, definitely are some assholes but it is kinda sweet to see the parents still believing in their children being alive.
-Speaking of their children, Nami in Sanji's body and Usopp cannot hold back the children any longer when Caesar suddenly appears with the drug-laced candy. Will they still be able to stop him? And will the Zoro, Kin'emon, Sanji in Nami's body and Brook group escape Smiley?
Only a decent episode this time.
Manga Differences: -The scene with Vergo punishing Law for a while longer is anime filler. Originally, this particular segment already ended with Vergo's first strike at Law that we saw last episode. -The scene with the Zoro & others group in this episode is also added content that was not there in the manga. -The opening of the scene on the island where the G-5 marines behave like assholes is also not in the manga. This scene only starts in the manga when the parents start begging Commander Yarisugi to reinvestigate again. -Otherwise the usual scene extensions.
See y'all 'morrow!
