Episode 600: "Save The Children! The Master's Evil Hands Close In!"
Evil hands? Luring kids with candy?....Gah, if he didn't already gave off the vibe of a creepy pedophile, all Caesar would have needed was a windowless van to really home in the impression.
Sadly, in the main part of this episode Caesar succeeds in recapturing the children despite Nami in Sanji's body and Usopp's best efforts in trying to keep the children from going back to him. But like drug addicts who want to return to their dealer to get their next fix (I know that sounds harsh, but it is really disturbing how much the kids in their behaviour do resemble addicts), they gleefully return to their master's side and even try to beat up the Straw Hats. Kudos to Nami in Sanji's body though for desperately keeping Usopp from hurting the children (even after she is punched by one of them), knowing that the children are victims who do not want to do this stuff. Surprisingly, Brownbeard has survived being shot at at point-blank range and has turned his view 180° regarding the Master but even his valiant effort that saves Nami in Sanji's body and Usopp for the time being, does not stand a chance against Caesar's Gastanet attack. So...I guess they are dead now?...Probably not.
Otherwise, nothing else is outstanding about this episode. The Zoro group is still running away from Smiley, the Luffy group is still captured (while we learn that the room is watched by Chopper who does not know what to do) and the Marines are still shooting at the entrance.
Still, a good episode mostly for the intense main part of the episode with the children.
Manga Differences: -Luffy not knowing at first who Doflamingo is is an anime-added extension. In the manga, he realizes far earlier who Doflamingo is. -The scene with the G-5 Marines noticing that the Smiley parts are moving in one direction is an anime-only scene that does not take place in the manga. -The same goes for the scene involving the Zoro group. -Otherwise, the usual scene extensions.
Mata ashita, yarodomo!

Episode 601: "Shaking Up The New World! Caesar's Horrendous Experiment!"
As long as you don't involve the children in your experiment, Caesar...
Most of this episode is set-up for the impending experiment. We do finally learn the reason why Caesar (or rather, Vergo) has Law's heart in his possession, Nami in Sanji's body as well as Usopp have survived Caesar's Gastanet attack (what a surprise!), the children have arrived back at the laboratory (though one of the kids, Mocha I think her name was, is the only one coming to her senses and wants to go back to her rescuers) and the Zoro group comes across the second-largest candy I have ever seen (where we see that a smaller-size dragon also exists).
Some fun moments in this one (Law pissing off Caesar is fun to watch as well as Smiley completely ignoring Caesar's hints at reminiscing together. Makes you almost feel sorry for him...almost) as well as the intense scene with Mocha (all the way to her imagining Caesar's henchmen as snakes, toads etc....really disturbing). How horrible is Caesar though...giving Smiley a huge candy to make him addicted too. Or is there another reason to it?
All in all, a decent episode.
Manga Differences: -The usual scene extensions but otherwise, nothing notable.
See y'all tomorrow!

Episode 602: "The Deadliest Weapon Of Mass Destruction In History! Shinokuni!"
I guess the inhabitants of One Piece have yet to experience something like the atomic or hydrogen bomb.
Well, one cannot certainly say that the anime makers do not milk building up Shinokuni to the last moment, with lots of shots of the giant candy getting dissolved in Smiley's body and Smiley's pained (well, as far as one can tell a big blob of jelly looks pained). And then Shinokuni finally gets released with its major advantage over other poison gases...it encases the victim in a coating so that there will be no survivors that might escape (and the coating certainly gives that a pretty death-like appearance). The worst part is that now Caesar puts the cage with his captives outside so that the Straw Hats and Marines are left to get engulfed in Shinokuni gas totally helpless. Will they manage to escape here?
Yeah, this ep is only decent and does not give much subject to talk about. It is good seeing Brownbeard and the Straw Hats coming to an agreement and working together as well as the Zoro group's learning of a new running technique to escape the Shinokuni gas is pretty hilarious. But yeah, very little stuff to talk about here.
Manga Differences: -The Zoro group running normally and then deciding to speed up by using another style of running is anime-added content. In the manga, they start running like that from the start. -Otherwise, the usual scene extensions here.
Let us meet the day that follows today again!

Episode 603: "Launching The Counterattack! Luffy And Law's Great Escape!" You are quite the sneaky fellow, Mr. Law. As the episode title suggests, the captured Straw Hats + Law and the Marines manage to escape by Law wisely doing precautions just in case. Following some fun moments (Tashigi's reaction after getting back in her body and her peeved attitude towards Smoker's use of her body, Franky going away via Coup De Poo to take care of the Sunny in the interim) and some tense moments (Tashigi deciding on the mature course of action of throwing away her pride in order to save her soldiers and the children, Law's condition for releasing Smoker), the Straw Hats make it into the laboratory... ...where they are soon joined by their fellow Straw Hats (the Sanji in Nami's body group accompanied by Brownbeard + the Zoro group joined by Kin'emon) who manage to go in just in time via Zoro and Kin'emon's amazing swordsplay. Have to say that tailed beings getting bitten in their tails never fails to amuse me (and it provides the only useful action by the dragon that the group is now accompanied by since for some reason, this dragon cannot fly) and Sanji in Nami's body's way of gaining a speed-up to catch the dragon is pretty ingenious. Furthermore, in another part of the world, some other Supernovas are forming a pirate alliance despite getting along like cats and dogs: Basil Hawkins, Scratchmen Apoo (both of them virtually unchanged) + Eustass "Captain" Kidd (who gained some scars during those two years...and did he lose one of his arms) including his right-hand man Killer (who apparently went to Dr. Zahorian in the meantime). I wonder if that will come up again somewhere in the future. With everyone now inside the laboratory complex, it will be interesting to see how things progress. A good episode all in all. Manga Differences: -Basically all the Marines scenes are anime-only filler that do not happen in the manga. We only get major interactions from them after they have entered the laboratory complex. -Otherwise, I can only recall the usual scene extensions. Later days!

Episode 604: "Get To Building R! The Pirate Alliance's Great Advance!"
Finally, I can drop writing "Nami in Sanji's body"!
Everybody has arrived in the laboratory and already tempers flare with the G-5 marines not very happy about having to close up the hole that Zoro and Kin'emon cut in order to make it in. In happier news, Sanji and Nami finally get their bodies reversed (though Nami cannot help getting one final punch at Sanji in over his disrobing of her when he went into the lake to save Kin'emon's torso) and everyone moves on towards their respective goals: capturing Caesar, saving the children and escaping the island by the one way that leads to the open sea. Let's hope that they will be successful.
We also get a nice character moment where Zoro tells Luffy to get a grip on himself after hearing that he was taken out by Caesar. They cannot be defeated already at the entrance to the New World otherwise their whole two-year training would be for nothing. A neat insight by Zoro, a character whom we do not know to be this perceptive usually. It is also good to see him and Luffy being on the same page about this.
A nice episode with some fun moments but it is hampered by some drawn-out scenes showing Shinokuni gas covering the island. I guess it is meant to convey to us the horror and danger of this gas, but we already know its effects. And just showing it putting ash coating on the cage and buildings does not really cut it. Just too long and time-wasting sequences are these.
Therefore, it is only a decent episode.
Manga Differences: -Besides the usual scene extensions, nothing that notable to report.
Until 'morrow, laddies!

Episode 605: "Tashigi's Tears! G-5's Desperate Breakthrough Plan!"
I salute you, G-5! Your sacrifice was worthwhile!
All fighters from the bright side of the force continue fighting through to the only escape route but it becomes apparent what power a fully electronic facility has when an evil one is at the helm...in this case, ordering a gate between two buildings to be closed while an outside cannon shoots a hole in the wall so that the Shinokuni gas can enter. A really tense moment made all the more urgent by the alarm sound of the closing gate which really emphasizes the danger the Straw Hats and the Marines are in. Luckily, after a brief scuffle between the parties, a valiant effort by Tashigi gets everybody to focus more on moving forward. Ultimately, some G-5 marines make the ultimate sacrifice of throwing Tashigi through the barely open door (because they figured that she would have stayed behind to ensure that her men come in first). Have to say, I gained a bit of respect for them after that: they may be a rough bunch but they have their heart in the right place. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten.
Otherwise, there is not much to report. Caesar's benevolent mask shatters a bit when he orders the entrapment plan despite there being a lot of his own henchmen still being in the first building; Vergo continues to baffle me whether he is really all there mentally; there is a fun moment with Luffy taking out a "centaur" while commenting on the latter's spider legs, and Brownbeard becoming more and more of a bus for the Straw Hats. Still, those are some neat scenes and far preferable to endless scenes of Shinokuni gas covering the mountains.
All in all, a good episode after the weak one yesterday.
Manga Differences: -The scene with Chopper getting lost in the facility is an anime-added scene. Originally, the scene ended after Chopper decided to discard the note that he received of not doing anything. -We never actually see the G-5 members picking up Tashigi and throwing her beyond the closing door. In the manga, we only see the scene from when she falls down out of nowhere. -The usual scene extensions.
Let us see each other again the day following today!

Episode 606: "The Treacherous Vice Admiral! Demon Bamboo Vergo!"
Brownbeard, if you want to ever get a foot in the transport business, you need to be more polite to your clients.
The main focus in this episode is a pretty chilling sequence where Vergo appears in front of the G-5 marines (who are, of course, happy to see him) and silently starts to kill them in cold blood. Those scenes are eerily juxtaposed with flashbacks to his public persona where he appeared to be a trustworthy and kind marine soldier who cared about his underlings, making his silent killing all the more horrible. It is also appears to me that this scene is a bit more brutal compared to more recent scenes because we see Vergo's hands dripping with blood from the finger guns he uses to kill the marines (cannot remember seeing so much blood in that context recently). Also heartbreaking is Tashigi being helpless against Vergo and getting swatted away while trying to help her comrades. Luckily Sanji arrives to take care of Vergo (after noticing Tashigi's distress in his own manner). Hopefully he will be successful.
In other scenes, Chopper manages to find Mocha, the only child who seems to have a bit of fighting spirit in her, and works with her to keep the other children from getting to the candy; we get a funny scene with the other Straw Hats as well as Kin'emon abusing Brownbeard as a public bus of which he is not really happy about (though he gets a speed up when the dragon they brought in from the outside appears again). And finally, Luffy and Smoker have arrived at Caesar's control room with Luffy taking no time (which Smoker does not allow him anyway) to punch Caesar...RIGHT IN THE STOMACH!!! Will everything turn out good?
Another good episode again.
Manga Differences: -The whole scene involving Mocha and Chopper in this episode is anime filler. The next time we see Chopper in the manga, he is already fighting the children that have broken through the door him and Mocha currently guard. -Luffy and Smoker running upstairs with Luffy leaving a trail of fire in his wake from running so fast is also anime filler. We see them again in the manga when they are already standing in front of Caesar's room.
Another break tomorrow for Manga Volume 71 so see you on Saturday!

Episode 607: "A Fierce Battle Gets Heated! Luffy vs. Caesar!"
Title writer forgot to add "Round II" to that title.
Indeed, Luffy and Caesar engage in another battle that is as good as the first due to Caesar's creativity in using gas manipulation to his advantage (creating flammable gas to light the surrounding area on fire, using oxygen to create a blue "light saber" to attack Luffy with etc.). At this time, it is notable mentioning (although this got explained earlier in his fight with Nami and Sanji which I didn't mention before) that the reason Luffy lost against him the first time was due to suffocation caused by his oxygen manipulation. However, this time, it is not nearly as effective as Luffy proves equally adaptive to combat this hindrance and fight Caesar tooth-and-nail...until Caesar gets protected by Monet who joins the fight to keep Luffy away from Caesar. We have yet to see a good look at her powers but that should become aparent shortly.
In another fight, Sanji and Vergo prove equal opponents although the fight is not as entertaining as the other one due to this being all about kick exchanges. It is curious that Vergo is able to withstand Sanji's kicks rather easily although we also don't know the extent of his powers yet. Looking forward to see what else he has in store.
Finally, Law moves forward into the production room for the product known as SAD which has all the villains in a jiffy. Why is that? Guess we'll have to find out.
A good episode with one entertaining fight especially.
Manga Differences: -Law going along the corridor to the SAD room, encountering the guards and taking care of them is anime filler. Originally, the manga starts in this part with the announcement by the observing guards that Law has entered the SAD room. -Otherwise the usual scene extensions.
Until 'morrow!

Episode 608: "A Mastermind Underground! Doflamingo Makes His Move!"
...by having a phone conversation with his underling. Well, it can be considered a move, still.
So, we get the first appearance of Doflamingo after the time skip in what we assume is his hideout called Dressrosa...and he certainly has a colorful amount of characters among him: -a fat guy who uses "-in" a lot in his sentences. -a child whom we only see eat grapes/plums and who has a visor (?) that she must have stolen from a Saiyan or something. -a guy in a gimp suit who just sits there and shoots. -a old couple
An finally, while Doflamingo has his phone conversation with Vergo, he gets attacked by a woman in a French maid outfit who can transform her whole body. Have to say that he does have nerves of steel, calmly doing his phone conversation while this lady shoots and attacks him relentlessly. Ultimately, he decides to send two further henchmen named Baby 5 and Buffalo to support Vergo (I am also amused how Doflamingo is used to Vergo's verges of forgetfulness).
Meanwhile, Luffy has problems fighting Monet who has eaten the Snow-Snow fruit, enabling her to turn herself into snow and to create snow at will. Luffy has much more difficulty with fighting her than with Caesar probably because he is too hasty in focusing on going after Caesar to concentrate on fighting her earnestly. Hopefully he will get serious soon.
More entertaining is the fight with the Straw Hats on the Brownbeard Bus against the dragon, mostly because of Kin'emon's reactions to the various Straw Hats' powers (and calling them breast cloth girl, goblin and courtesan respectively while calling Brook respectfully Lord Corpse...because the latter is a swordsman as well?) and other fun moments (Nami doing ninja hand seals while trying to be a samurai, Brook's angry reaction at the dragon's disinterest in eating him). Ultimately, they defeat the dragon and we learn that Kin'emon has some hatred towards dragons...I wonder why?
Finally, Sanji and the marines have left the passage between Buildings A and B behind them; Chopper orders Mocha to throw the candy away while he takes a rumble ball and tries to stall the children in his giant form (luckily, the Straw Hats on the Brownbeard Express are there in time); Law is on the verge of doing something to the SAD production facility; And one of the children mentions having seen Momonosuke, Kin'emon's son. Will we finally meet his kid?
Another good episode.
Manga Differences: -A small moment but in the manga, there was originally a reaction from Robin towards Kin'emon's "courtesan" comment (granted, only a silent "..." but still) which does not happen in the anime. -The usual scene extensions.
Tomorrow there will be another break for the One Piece TV Special "Episode Of Merry" so see you on Tuesday!

Episode 609: "Luffy Dies From Exposure?! The Spine-Chilling Snow Woman Monet!"
Exposure to what? The secret Channel Awesome Files?
Monet proves to be rather intelligent, knowing that she cannot beat Luffy 1-on-1 and using cunning to hug him and freeze him to death which almost works. Luckily, the thoughts of his friends keep Luffy alive and he can free himself...but unfortunately he falls down into the trash compactor (luckily it does not appear to be wet so no danger of encountering a Dianoga there). Furthermore, this frees up Monet for entering the Biscuit Room and hampering the Straw Hats' efforts to keep the children from getting the drug-laced candy. Stuff just keeps piling up for the Straw Hats.
Meanwhile, Law is like CM Punk against Mike Jackson regarding Vergo...as in he gets completely pummelled by him without breaking a sweat. It is understandable though since any serious effort by Law would lead to Vergo crushing his heart so he fights a pretty hopeless battle (which is probably why Law decreed that Smoker should fight Vergo instead of Caesar due to their hearts' possession). Given the coloring of his body, I am starting to assume that Vergo does not have a devil fruit power but merely uses Armament Haki all the time. Certainly a handy weapon to have. But will it help him against Smoker who shows up just in time?
Finally, Caesar has made it to a secret room where he will probably hide for the remainder of the time limit set by Law and we still don't know what happened to Momonosuke (and what's that about him not eating?).
Another good episode.
Manga Differences: -Caesar monologuing in his secret room is anime filler. We don't see him again until he has already activated the room and is surrounded by his henchmen. -The usual scene extensions.
See y'all later tomorrow!

Episode 610: "Fists Collide! A Battle Of The Two Vice Admirals!"
Poor Caesar, for your tragic tale I'll play the world's smallest violin for you.
As the title suggests, Vergo and Smoker begin their battle with some good fluid battle animation. It appears to me that Smoker is in a bit of a disadvantage here since his useful Sea Prism Stone-enhanced blunt weapon is useless against Vergo, but Vergo with his Armament Haki is able to attack Smoker at will. We shall see how this ends.
Not much movement at the other locations either. Sanji, Tashigi and the Marines are still running towards the exit with more and more cracks opening, letting the Shinokuni gas in. Sanji, for his part, is pretty valiant, trying to encourage the Marines to keep running (although all of them save Tashigi are male)...but perhaps he is trying to curry favor with Tashigi? Anyway, the other Straw Hats are still kept from escaping by Monet with there being a standstill of sorts (well, except Usopp, Brook and Kin'emon running off to find Sea Prism Stone handcuffs and Momonosuke).
In the second half of the episode, we focus more on Caesar and the sob story he tells to his henchmen (who seem to have a bit of a brain after all, questioning why their Master has created a poison gas) about the big meanie Vegapunk and his vain efforts to stop Vegapunk to activate the weapon that destroyed Punk Hazard. Of course, in the flashback we know the real deal about how it was him that activated his own weapon. Points for his acting job that convinces his underlings but I just wished somebody would shut him up already.
Finally, in the trash compactor, Luffy does not find a Dianoga but a small, pink, talking dragon instead. Whazzupwitdat?
A decent episode here.
Manga Differences: -Only recall the scene extensions here but nothing else struck out.
Let us meet on the day that follows today!

Episode 611: "A Small Dragon! Momonosuke Appears!"
Dragon? Isn't he more of an eel though?
So yes, we finally get to see the son Kin'emon's been desperately on the lookout for ever since we met him. We also immediately learn why Momonosuke is in the current situation. Basically, he is on a hunger strike for some reason (probably some Samurai pride thing) while he was abducted with the other children, made only one exception to eat what was a devil fruit that turned him into a dragon and after overhearing Caesar further revealing what a piece of garbage he is regarding the children, he fell into the trash compactor where he spends most of his days. Interesting that in the flashback Momonosuke is only shown as a black figure as if he were the pre-revelation culprit in a Case Closed episode. Unless he gets to be revealed as a surprise character, I don't know why they are doing this. Anyway, Momonosuke seems to be as Samurai honor-bound as Kin'emon, but he has a good heart at least, seeing the other children's friendliness towards him even though he declines their food and friendship offerings. He also seems to have a bit of a trauma...but hey, if it helps Luffy and him getting out of the trash compactor, the better.
Otherwise, constant scene changes about. Sanji enjoys kicking the marines' asses to keep them moving forward in a funny scene; the Straw Hats continue fighting Monet with Zoro now apparently taking the helm to fight Monet; Usopp, Kin'emon and Brook search for both Momonosuke and Sea Prism Stone handcuffs; and finally, Smoker and Vergo fight a pretty stalemate fight. It will be interesting to see how the different venues will end up.
A decent episode again.
Manga Differences: -Basically the Smoker/Vergo, Sanji/Marines as well as the Usopp/Brook/Kin'emon scenes were filler that were not in the manga. -Otherwise the usual scene extensions.
Until 'morrow!

Episode 612: "A Deadly Fight In A Blizzard! The Straw Hats vs. The Snow Woman!"
At least it's not the Abominable Snowman they have to face.
The fight against Monet gets heated with Zoro being a worthwhile opponent for Monet who insists on killing the weaker ones (like Nami, Chopper and Robin) first, using some interesting techniques (becoming a giant snow monster with a huge set of razor sharp teeth for example) though I wonder why she does not use the encapsulating technique she tried with Luffy? Luffy, I admit, has the strength to overcome her igloos but the other Straw Hats, I am not so sure about. Anywho, Zoro manages to hold off Monet long enough for the others to escape when Sanji and the Marines suddenly appear. This leads to some fun Zoro/Sanji moments including a rather adorable Monet moment where she blushes upon hearing the Marines and Sanji's compliments despite her harpy figure. Finally, Tashigi joins the fight so that it turns into an interesting handicap match: Zoro/Tashigi vs. Monet. Who will win?
Otherwise, we get an inside into Mocha's feelings, remembering the outward appearance that Caesar Clown and Monet put up, pretending to be nice people (though Monet is not a harpy in those flashbacks. Is that something Law did as well for her?) and how she met all the other kids she made friends with...and how they are now chasing her, completely overcome by their addiction to those candies, which is makes it all the more sad for what Mocha has to go through. Meanwhile, Luffy and Momonosuke are still climbing while Usopp, Brook and Kin'emon are still searching.
All in all, a good episode again.
Manga Differences: -The Luffy/Momonosuke scene in this episode was all filler. We only see them again in the manga when they have already made it out of the trash compactor. -Ditto for the Usopp, Brook and Kin'emon scene where we see them again only after they already split up. -The same for the Caesar Clown scene. Him we only see again when he gets faced by Brownbeard. -Otherwise, the usual scene extensions.
Later days!

Episode 613: "Showing Off His Techniques! Zoro's Formidable One-Sword Style!"
Yes, very formidable. That Monet was killed right on impact by that formidable one-sword style. /s
Monet gets finally defeated by the tandem of Zoro/Tashigi in this episode...or rather Tashigi does most of the fighting after accusing Zoro of not being able to fight against women (to which we get a flashback to the end of the first fight all the way back in Loguetown) with him leaving her to carry the fight on her own. Tashigi is, unfortunately, not really a match for Monet despite being able to use Haki and almost loses her shoulder in the process. Luckily, Zoro manages to kill Monet's fighting spirit by overwhelming her with his killing intent, causing her to break down and being wide open for a final slash by Tashigi. The fight is really not that interesting but Zoro's and Tashigi's fun interactions more than make up for it.
Otherwise, nothing much happens. Luffy now does the climbing with an unconscious Momonosuke on his back; Nami, Chopper and Robin keep trying valiantly to keep the other children away from Mocha; Brook and Kin'emon have found a child who knows Momonosuke;Usopp goes aimlessly through the facility...and Caesar just sits lazily in his secret room. Nothing that exciting happens.
Only a decent episode therefore.
Manga Differences: -As said yesterday, the manga sets in regarding Luffy and Momonosuke when they have already made it out of the trash chute. So the whole scene with them here is filler material. -The same goes for the Brook & Kin'emon, Usopp and Nami/Chopper/Robin scenes which are all filler material that does not happen in the manga. -The usual scene extensions otherwise.
Until 'morrow!

Episode 614: "To Save Her Friends! Mocha Runs At The Risk Of Her Life!"
*sniff* You are a brave kid indeed, Mocha.
The chase for the candies ends with Mocha making the ultimate sacrifice to save her friends: swallowing all the candies herself, effectively leading her to an OD. Prefacing that, we finally get the conversation between her and Chopper where he spills the beans regarding Caesar, why the kids are imprisoned and how they will eventually die when they stay here, leading to a swank character moment from Chopper when he apologizes to Mocha for not finding them sooner which allows him to win her over. This makes it all the more painful to see him having to watch in shock at Mocha's action (and the poor thing does look pretty miserable right after swallowing the candies). Thankfully, her sacrifice confuses the children long enough to get them all sedated (with the help of the appearing Sanji/Marines group). And I could not help but become teary-eyes at Chopper's conversation with Mocha commending her about protecting her friends and promising her that she will grow up.
Otherwise, there is not much happening. Zoro and Tashigi have an adorable moment together when the former carries her due to her injuries but his terrible sense of direction keeps them going in the same room again. Finally, Luffy and Momonosuke have made their way out of the trash compactor and are on their way to confront Caesar. We seem to be moving to the home stretch.
Because of the very good Mocha segment, I'll deem this a good episode.
Manga Differences: -The Zoro/Tashigi scene is all filler. Originally, we don't see them again until they have caught up with the Marines. -Otherwise, only the usual scene extensions.
See y'all 'morrow!

Episode 615: "Brownbeard In Grief! Luffy Lands A Furious Blow!"
And may more furious blows follow that one!
This episode seems to mainly serve as a final reminder what kind of despicable human being Caesar is, acting like he is concerned and surprised about Brownbeard's actions when in reality, he sneakily injects him with a muscle relaxant that causes his speech to become unintelligible and mocking him by revealing that he left his underlings out there to die of exposition to Shinokuni gas. This, of course, causes Brownbeard's anger to boil over, leading to Caesar's henchmen (that Brownbeard tried to warn about Caesar's true colors) shooting him point-blank. If there was ever any doubt that Caesar might be pretty close to Spandam levels of repulsiveness, this is it....which makes it all the more rewarding when Luffy comes to the rescue and lands a heavy blow on Caesar. Afterwards we also learn why Doflamingo is so protective over Caesar: as we learn, SAD is a substance to create SMILE, a man-made devil fruit giving its eaters beast abilities and which is a pretty profitable endeavor for Doflamingo (I believe that...though I wonder if Caesar managed to do away with the side effect of the eaters becoming anchors in sea water?). Caesar uses this to threaten Luffy into retreat...but Caesar does not know that Luffy is a guy who went to the law island of Enie's Lobby to get a comrade back and also to Impel Down and Marineford to rescue his brother, so I doubt he would be deterred by a threat like that. As it turns out, that is correct and Luffy provides some facial reconstruction surgery for him (though I doubt it to be as successful as Sanji's).
Nothing much happens at the other scenes with everyone still either running around looking for something, fighting or treating somebody.
But still a good episode this time around.
Manga Differences: -Brownbeard's final running stretch towards the door is only seen in the anime version. When we see him in the manga version, he is already at the door screaming for Caesar. -In the manga, Brownbeard actually says something unintelligible while trying to hit Caesar with a pipe while in the anime, he only does regular grunts. -Luffy running towards the scene before R-66 with Momonosuke awakening is also anime filler. The first we see of Luffy in this scene is when his giant fist hits Caesar. -The usual scene extensions.
Let us meet the day that follows today!

Episode 616: "A Surprising Outcome! Smoker vs. Vergo!"
Well, I guess Luffy is not the OP one in that pirate alliance.
Since we had a lot of closures in the past few episodes, it makes sense to also put a kibosh on the Smoker vs. Vergo fight. As in the last scenes we saw of them, it is a really well-animated fight and I really like the blackening effect in this episode that we get a lot in this fight, standing for the Armament Haki effect. Ultimately, Smoker proves to be too weak against Vergo who proves himself quite a capable fighter...but as it turns out, Smoker just distracted him to give Law his heart back. And with Vergo not having any leverage against Law anymore, Law manages to slice him in two...as well as the SAD tanks...as well as the whole mountain they are in. Geezus, did he go into Super Saiyan mode just now or what? Was he always this powerful? I guess the joke will be on him when the Shinokuni gas enters there and immediately engulfs him. Also love the tense discussion between Law and Doflamingo leading up to this attack as well.
As with most of the episodes in the past few days, nothing much happens in the other parts. Luffy continues to be unimpressed by Caesar's continued tries to back him down by telling him of the mighty forces that await him should he lay a finger on him and moves forward punching him (though Caesar's Gastille attack looks pretty impressive). Chopper treats Mocha while the Sanji group has the kids sedated and ready to run with them to the exit. Usopp accidentally enters Caesar's secret room in a funny moment while Kin'emon has become desperate after learning that Momonosuke has turned into a dragon (believing that he was the dragon he cut earlier) and apparently running into Shinokuni gas. Hopefully, Brook can stop him in time. Oh and Tashigi seems to learn the hard way about Zoro's terrible sense of direction.
Another good episode.
Manga Differences: -The Smoker/Vergo scene before Smoker does his final attack (where he camouflages his taking of Law's heart) is anime filler. While Smoker does this final attack is where we return in the manga version. -Usopp listening to the noise in the secret room and then accidentally opening it, becoming visible to all the guards there, is also anime-added content. Originally, the manga part sets in when he is already acknowledged by the guards. -The whole Zoro/Tashigi + Chopper/Mocha scenes were anime-only that were not in the manga. -The usual scene extensions.
Later days!

Episode 617: "Caesar's Defeat! The Powerful Grizzly Magnum!"
Caesar's underlings must feel like "Everybody betray me! I fed up wit dis world!"
And so the final fight in the Punk Hazard facility comes to an end. Enraged by Luffy's constant attacks, Caesar finally sheds his benevolent facade and gives a final order that crushes his henchmen's hearts when they finally realize what kind of rotten scumbag they've been working for (not that they are any better either given their behaviour in this arc so far). The final order allows Caesar to fuse with the Shinokuni gas and although it seems to cause him a bit of strain, he seems to cope better with it than Gecko Moria did when he inhaled all those shadows. In a cruel act, Caesar kills his own henchmen with his new Shinokuni powers which brings Luffy's blood to a boiling point (after all, as Usopp later mentions, we know that Luffy absolutely loathes people who do not care about their comrades/henchmen/etc.) leading to his final attack: the Grizzly Magnum...though he has already shown in his fight against Hordy Jones that he is capable of using 2 Gear Third enhanced limbs at the same time. I guess the difference is that this is more of a bazooka-type attack and it is Armament Haki-enhanced? Anyway, Luffy uses it in impressive fashion to finish off Caesar once and for all and shooting him quite a fair distance away...but Luffy, you still have to catch him, right?
Again, other places are not given much focus. Law and Smoker wrap everything up on their end, hanging Vergo out to dry in embarrassing fashion which the latter takes rather non-chalantly and gives Law one final warning, mentioning Joker's aka Doflamingo's past. Very mysterious, what does he mean? Otherwise, everyone is on their way to the door incl. Chopper (who has finished his first aid on Mocha) as well as Zoro & Tashigi (where Zoro has managed to get so lost that they have appeared in front of the Marines although they were behind them). Hopefull, Usopp as well as Brook & Kin'emon will get to R-66 as well.
Another good episode and a swell bookend on the fighting portion of this arc...or isn't it?
Manga Differences: -The whole scene with the cut-in-half Vergo launching one final attack against Law is anime-filler. After Law's OP attack, the next time we see that setting in the manga, Law has already cut up Vergo in that compromising position. -Originally, Luffy's Grizzly Magnum attack immediately connects with Caesar and knocks him out. In the anime, Caesar manages to hold back Luffy for a while and even manages to partially encase his hands in Shinokuni gas while giving him a piece of his mind. The latter version makes me wonder where Luffy suddenly got the momentum again to push further against Caesar so I think the manga version was a bit better in that regard. -The usual scene extensions.
Let us meet the day following today!

Episode 618: "Raid! An Assassin From Dressrosa!" Baby 5? What did you do to the other four babies then, Doflamingo?! In this episode we get an appearance from the assassins Doflamingo has sent to retrieve Caesar, Vergo and Monet: -Buffalo, a fat fellow with a big mouth who reminds me of Karlsson-on-the-roof for some reason (might just be his fatness and him being able to fly). Turns out that the reason he is able to fly is, again, a devil fruit named the Spin-Spin Fruit. Seeing as he is referred to as a combatant in Doflamingo's pirate crew, I guess he is not exactly a field commander so we shall see what he is capable of. -Baby 5, as it turns out, is the woman in the French maid outfit who tried to kill Doflamingo a few episodes ago...and she appears to be the epitome of a Yes woman to a worrying level (as in takes any proposal offer she gets, subscribes to every newspaper she gets asked etc.). I am sure she is every salesperson's wet dream (and male persons come to think about it). She is also loaded with weapons as if she is going on a Rambo mission. Meanwhile, most everyone has made it to the R-66 door (with Smoker and Law even kind enough to bring a big cart to transport everyone) except for Usopp, the Chopper/Mocha group and Brook/Kin'emon...and unfortunately Kin'emon got hit by the Shinokuni gas and is dead. That's sad, now poor Momonosuke's an orphan (then again, we don't know if his mom is alive). Hopefully, they get there before Law gets impatient (and his patience is already thin after learning that Luffy blasted Caesar far away). Finally, Buffalo and Baby 5 arrive on the island and find the beaten Caesar...as well as Frankie inside the General Frankie robot (haven't seen him for a few episodes now since he pooped himself away). Looks like we might find out what those two are all about. Another good episode. Manga Differences: -We never see Law and Smoker pull the cart up to the others in the manga. In the manga, it is implied that the cart was already there. -Otherwise, only the usual scene extensions I can remember. A break tomorrow for Manga Volume 72, so see you on Saturday!

Episode 619: "Running Wild! Invincible General Franky!"
We'll see about that after knowing what happened following that suicide bombing.
We get into the fight Franky (in his General Franky bodysuit) vs. Buffalo/Baby 5 proper and it is a good 'un despite it consisting mostly of a stationary fighter vs. moving fighters. Most of it has to do with Buffalo and Baby 5 being a pretty good combo force, especially Baby 5 being a weapon human (having eaten the weapon-weapon fruit making her able to change all of her body into weapons) giving us a variety of slicing weapons up to a full-blown missile that makes her able to do a suicide (?) bombing on Franky. Add to that some fun moments (like Franky being late to put up his shield against Baby 5's bazooka) and you have a pretty neat fight.
We also get the whole gang back together with Usopp, Brook, the dead Kin'emon as well as Caesar's former henchmen (who value their lives more than dying for such a person that betrayed them like that) and they finally get under way to escape the facility. The beaten Caesar meanwhile remembers that he still has Smoker's heart and prepares to stab it to take at least one of them with him.
Finally, Monet has survived Tashigi's sword slash and, as per orders from Doflamingo, gets ready to push a self-destruct button to destroy all of Punk Hazard (except for Caesar being that he is made of gas). This is a really chilling scene since Doflamingo gives his orders in a calm manner and even says goodbye to Vergo, making him appear as a person who does care about losing his henchmen which is unexpected. There is also a weird scene with Monet striking this weird "awaiting blessings from heaven" pose (if I were Doflamingo, I would be livid if I saw her wasting time on an order like that) and the episode ends...rather shockingly with a final big explosion and no preview for the next episode as if everything really ends here. Quite an interesting change of pace for this show.
All in all, another good episode.
Manga Differences: -The manga had a weird panel where it appears like Usopp had a bit of a scuffle with the henchmen in Caesar's room following Caesar's defeat (which really did not make sense since they had no reason to fight him after that). That scene is omitted in the anime, instead we have several anime-only scenes with the henchmen asking Usopp to join their escape which makes more sense really (although in the manga they do escape together). -Otherwise, the usual scene extensions.
See y'all tomorrow!
