Yeah its flat out insane that Russia spent $51 billion on the winter Olympics despite it being nowhere near as big or popular as the summer Olympics. Also I had a mate who went to Athens a few years ago and he did some underground urban exploration tour of all the abandoned venues that were used at the games. According to him the tour guide spent a good part of the tour saying how hosting the games in Athens was a stupid idea and how its pretty much ruined the city. Scarier to hear the then President of the IOC Jacques Rogge admit that Athens was a mistake and the IOC had some responsibility toward the economic downturn in Europe in the late 2000s. I love the Olympics passionately. Been watching since 1984. It is a major interest of mine and I believe in the prosaic potential of the Games. But they have major rebuilding from the excess to save them. I'm pretty sure as soon as they announced Athens as the 04 host the IOC were told they had just made a big mistake. But to be fair Athens wasn't the first city that should of never been allowed to host the game.

There's a book about the Juan Antonio Samaranch reign as IOC president called The Lord of the Rings (not kidding). Worth looking into.

Yeah, I'd say London is one of a dozen or so cities on the planet that could handle the games without stretching itself way past it's limit It says a lot that London was the first city since Sydney in 2000 to turn a profit from its games says a lot about how well it was able to pull it off. And as someone who lived in London the year after the games (and was lucky enough to be a Games Maker for the Paralympics), it was definitely the inability from those in power to fully capitalize on what we had from the games. Sure, the anniversary games were and are always awesome and we hosted several tournaments at the venues afterwards as well as stuff like the Tour De France, the Champions League final, the World Athletics Championshops etc but outside of the Olympic Park and a few ther venues, there was a real lack of effort into really getting momentum past the first year except with volunteering (something I did a lot of in the first year after London 2012). Not to get into politics but most of it is to blame on those higher up for having zero idea what to do with the positive momentum London got.
