One of the most famous deaths in a Animated Movie. but as everyone knows Hasbro thought OP could have been easily replaced but boy was they wrong. It almost killed the franchise off. And it's not like every damn series haven't try to kill him off either hell even Bay fell in that trap. At least They haven't don't that stupid death from the Marvel comic. So if you was charge back then would you have kill him off?

As far as the movie goes. His Death was kind of needed. It made the move that much more powerful.
I just don't know if Rodimus was the right character to replace him.
Also don't think you can blame Rodimus / OP's death for the decline of G1. I think a lot of it came from Hasbro just going further and further away from the designs that people liked.
"Oh cool a robot that turns into something I recognize."
"Oh... a robot that turns into a.... uhm..... spact jet? Boat? What is that?"

Maybe but after 2 years they should have know people would fall in love with those characters.
Just think how much worse it would have been if they did that scene where the 84-85 Autobots just got slaughter
Also Starscream was a big fan favorite. A lot of people have told me killing him off was when they quit with the show

Optimus sticks around, uses the matrix to kill off Unicron. Opening the matrix is pretty much suicide, but a guarantee kill.
The Shiki Fuujin in Naruto before it, if any of you know naruto.
A life for a life, would explain why all the primes are in the matrix too.

I have to throw a bone to Hot Rod. I love that they brought back Judd Nelson to reprise his role in TF Animated. I dunno if he should've been the next prime, but I don't mind it either. I might be one of the few who liked it cause my first transformers experience was seeing the movie.

He always did get a raw deal.
The writing from the movie to the show was so different. If in the show they didn't have him always complaining
Also a funny note the toy commercials actually spoiled Prime's death

The reason I keep hearing they killed off the characters in the movie because their toys were discontinued.
I believe that. But they were robots, couldn't they have just been given new bodies? .. like Bumblebee into Gold Bug.
Hell if they saved the introduction of the Protectobots until post movie they could have reformatted Prowl and Ratchet into the police car and ambulance of that group.

Yeah they could have got new toys. Hell many of them actually did Another thing. Which questions the discontinued toys. Was they killed off Brawn and Huffer (not seen in movie, but mentioned later in series), but they kept using their molds to make Outback and Pipes. Also the truck part of Ultra Magnus was basically a white Optimus Prime with an unpainted head. Oh and all the Decepticon Seekers are supposedly killed or reformatted in the movie.. but the Coneheads show up in the following series. Not just as background characters either. Dirge, Ramjet, and Thrust are hiding out in ..ugh sigh.., Carbombya... I guess those were clones that Unicron chomped.

I can see why they did it, but in retrospect it wasn't the best of decisions. Had I been in charge at the time, knowing then what I know now, I'd have had Prime get severely damaged by Megatron and then rebuilt by the Junkions. I'd drop the Ultra Magnus character and have that toy be the new, rebuilt Optimus Prime. Or, to build on Gojira's idea, maybe hold off on introducing the combiner teams until after the movie and have the Protectobots, Stunticons, and Combaticons be new versions of the discontinued Autobots - the toy that was called Motormaster would be Optimus Prime instead, First Aid would be the new Ratchet, Streetwise would be the new Prowl, Swindle would be the new Hound, etc.

More discontinued characters just disappeared with no explanation than were killed on screen. Since they were skipping ahead to the future anyway, maybe just introduce the new characters and say the others all died or retired in the interim and go from there.
