Someone at work the other day was wearing a "Team North America" Colton Parayko jersey. First of all, sweet jerseys. They look like something a Mighty Ducks movie villain team would wear. But most importantly, the World Cup of Hockey was pretty much everyone hoping this team would play Team Canada, and sadly we never got to see that.
What are some other highly-anticipated matchups we either got denied of in specific years, or that we just never got to see in general?

The first thing that came to mind was Wladimir Klitschko vs. Lennox Lewis. There really hasn't been a potential marquee heavyweight fight since.

Even as a Patriots fan, I still wonder what would have happened if the Bears and Dolphins faced each other in the Super Bowl.

The 2003 World Series would have been epic had it been Red Sox vs Cubs. The two most star crossed franchises in sports and only one team could end it's misery. It could have been the stuff of legend, like last year's World Series x100. But fate had to screw with both teams again and instead we got Yankees vs Marlins, a series anyone barely remrmbers. {Spoiler}***K YOU GRADY!!!

Even as a Patriots fan, I still wonder what would have happened if the Bears and Dolphins faced each other in the Super Bowl. That's a really good one. I know the Bears were expecting a rematch, and it would have been huge. Instead, we got a big blowout. As a kid I thought Broncos vs Vikings was going to be an epic Super Bowl....then Gary Anderson... Those Vikes were almost unstoppable that year. Almost. That would have been an amazing game.

Steelers great defense vs. 49ers great offense. Instead the Chargers ruined the party.

For two straight seasons in the AFL the Grand Final match was between the Sydney Swans and the West Coast Eagles. In 2005 Swans won a close game, in 2006 the Eagles won in another close encounter.
So in 2007 there was hope these two teams would make the GF again in and face off in a rubber match ... But it did not happen, neither team made the Grand Final that year. And while both teams have made the Grand Final in the following years they would not face each other in it. And so much time has past that they have had coaching changes and most of thr players have retired or moved on, that if they do meet in a Grand Final again it would not be the same.

Cubs vs. Tigers in the 1984 WS would have really been interesting to see. A lot more intriguing than the Padres.

Portugal vs Czech Republic in the finals of Euro 2004. They were clearly the teams playing the best offensively in the whole tournament and would've been the highlight of the two golden generations of players in each country.
Then Greece's Iron Wall came in...

Lakers with Kobe vs Lebron and the Cavs This. They spent the entire playoffs hyping them up with the Nike puppets, and then the Cavs ended up losing to the Magic.

Lakers with Kobe vs Lebron and the Cavs That's probably the top one so far. Everybody thought they'd meet eventually, and then time just ran out.

1993 a Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Montreal Canadians Stanley Cup Final during the NHL's 100th season.
Yes I'm aware LA Kings vs. Montreal Canadians had historical significance of The Greatest Player ever in Wayne Gretzky vs. The most historical franchise ever in Montreal.
But the stars were just so perfectly aligned because for once Toronto had a cup contending team and two they were in The Western Conference for some weird temporary reason. It's just perfect having the two most storied franchises in the 100th season battling out for the cup
There will be never another opportunity like that again. It's like if The Red Sox vs. Yankees was a world series final.
