Anyone ever read about these? Here's the the Wiki entry about them for those curious: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Wonders_of_the_Ancient_WorldNone are completely intact (not even the Pyramids), but I recent found out that in addition to the Pyramids remnants of three others still exist. I actually already knew that the foundation of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus had been excavated and could be visited (along with a small museum), but didn't know about the other two. Apparently remnants of the Lighthouse of Alexandria are still around. Too bad they're underwater. I believe they're also tough to visit even if you had access to top notch deep sea vehicles because there are some military concerns about the area. The Temple of Artemis has even less surviving parts, but at least it can be visited by the general public. So little of it was left though that after some pieces of sculptures were transported to the British Museum for safe keeping that just random fragments were stacked to mark the spot where this building once stood.

They should be rebuilt, along with a statue of Andre The Giant.

It seems like every few years there is an attempt to create a new list of seven modern wonders. I remember a much-hyped online survey about 15 years ago that I participated in. I thought the results were a bit dubious, as something like 4 or 5 out of the 7 were in South America.
The trouble with a lot of these modern attempts, in my opinion, is they get too hung up on the word "wonders," as if each entry on the list needs to have some otherworldly or unbelievable quality to it in order to qualify. In reality, the original list was basically just a list of must-see tourist destinations of the time. So to create a "Seven Wonders of the Modern World" one would need to research the world's most visited buildings and monuments.
I would imagine a modern list looking something like this: the Pyramids, the Great Wall of China, Stonehenge, the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum, the Taj Mahal, and the Empire State Building.

On an Idiot Abroad (UK Travel show where Karl Pilkington visits each of the seven wonders) he does The Great Wall, Taj Mahal, Petra, Chichen Itza, Pyramids, Christ the Redeemer and Machu Picchu. Dunno if that's the official list or not. Out of them, I always thought Christ the Redeemer looks a bit naff... fantastic location, but the statue itself is nothing special, the Great Wall is largely rebuilt and fake (Or, as Karl puts it "It's not a Great Wall. It's an alright wall. It's the Alright Wall of China"). I'd throw in Angkor Wat in place of one of those which really is fabulous.

That's the problem right there. The reason those were considered "wonders" is because they pushed the boundaries of what humans were thought to be able to do. In an age where just about anything is possible with modern architecture, it's impossible to deem something more extraordinary than something else.

Thanks to Karl Dilkington I have acquired a habit of referring to it as the Alright Wall of China now. I've picked up many verbal habits thanks to Karl's drivel and nonsense over the years!

I’m not saying this just because I’m a Brit but I think Stonehenge should have been included on the new list. Yes, it’s not as breathtaking as the others that were voted (and having been there several times, the atmosphere is spoiled slightly by the A303 road right next to it) but how many others have the history and discussion that Stonehenge has? (Obviously not including the pyramids in that one as they were already deemed one of the new seven wonders before a vote was made.)

Why in the hell was I so sure Stonehenge was one of them. It’s debatably a modern one. In fact it has already been debated here haha.

The trouble with a lot of these modern attempts, in my opinion, is they get too hung up on the word "wonders," as if each entry on the list needs to have some otherworldly or unbelievable quality to it in order to qualify. But that's the exact qualification that was taken into account. The *exact* qualification. Seven man-made creations that seemed beyond the capabilities of man to create at the time. No they weren't. Most of them didn't even exist any longer (some by centuries) when the original list was created during the Renaissance. Stonehenge and the Easter Island heads Those aren't just heads, bro. They're full busts going all the way to the waist.
