For me the Obi-Wan scenes in Clones make up for the terrible Anakin/Padme stuff. Then the battle at the end is a lot of fun to watch. Especially seeing Yoda fight. Phantom Menace starts off fun, then Jar Jar gets more and more annoying as things continue. Then Anakin adds to that, and when they get to Coruscant, things slow to a crawl. Then the movie picks up again and the last act is fun, with the exception of Anakin destroying the ship seemingly by dumb luck. People who say Phantom Menace is one of the worst movies ever haven't seen many movies I'm guessing, but it's still the one Star Wars movie I revisit the least. Clones biggest fault for me is that Anakin and Obi-Wan's relationship isn't built up enough. They worked together early on (In that stupid scene with the bounty hunter) and then at the end but for most of the movies they're separated. In the OT, Ben says Anakin was a good friend but I didn't get much feeling of a great friendship between them in the prequels. Instead Anakin seems to spend all his time bitching about Obi-Wan. There were a few occasions (Obi-Wan been sarcastic about Anakin's failed rescue for example), but overall 2 was a missed opportunity to show the relationship between the pair to set up their friendship more ready for Anakin's heel turn in the next movie.

I'm actually listening to the new book "From A Certain Point of View" on audiobook as prep for the new movie, and holy crap, it's really really good. Paul Dini's chapter especially convinced me that he's the guy that should get a solo Boba Fett project off the ground.

I can only re-watch A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.
Lucas ruined Return of the Jedi with his shitty additions and alterations.
I will never watch the prequels again. They are just too awful.

Menace had the most notable flaws but, would be a solid movie if they were removed (Main flaws for me, Jar Jar, Anakin, too much politics). Simplify the plot, remove Jar Jar and make Anakin Luke's age and it would have been fine. I understand why people weren't fond of the politics, but I'm a firm believer that it was absolutely necessary. The only way Palpatine could rise to power was by manipulating the system and convincing people he was the right person to be in charge. All that said, you're right about a more simple plot. The Trade Federation should've had a better reason to harass Naboo than taxes. A general lust for power would have been enough reason and from there we could continue with what we got. As for Phantom Menace as a whole, I'm on the side that thinks it's better than Attack of the clones. One thing that gets overlooked is that The Phantom Menace takes place in the world that existed before the one we were introduced to in the original trilogy. More than any other prequel film, it was supposed to be different. Otherwise, I agree Anakin should've been a teenager and Jar Jar should've been gone.

The problem Phantom Menace had from a basic plot standpoint is that everyone watching already knows Vader's ultimate fate, so why bother cheering for young Anakin, especially when he's so annoying? I remember watching the pod race at the time and thinking "So....should I cheer him here? If he loses he stays a slave and doesn't wreck the galaxy." The really jarring thing is how stereotypical the alien characters are, with Jar Jar obviously being the "scared darkie" stand in, the Trade Federation guys being obvious corrupt Japanese businessmen, etc.
There's just no escaping the Trade Federation being the worst heels in the history of cinema. Not only are they terrible, stereotypical, and not entertaining, they aren't even masters of their own fate. They are pawns in Palpatine's plan.
I do get the notion that the Anakin/Obi Wan relationship is not developed enough. It's the dilemma where all of this characterization occurs off screen and between movies. But overall am I the only one who finds the prequels far more interesting to talk about? They're far weirder and have more moving parts, flawed and all. I think I was almost too used to that sort of geopolitical storytelling so I found Force Awakens very lacking in that area. The prequels had a very complex plot in terms of what was going on, but at least tried to discuss it. I spent all of Force Awakens not even understanding the basics of who the First Order even ARE or who is in charge of anything in the galaxy, etc.

I do a Star Wars marathon at least once a year. Im going to do a chronological rewatch about 8-10 days before Episode 8 comes out watching one or two a day.

Does marathoning the Star Wars movies include or exclude Clone Wars? Remember, those three episodes were a theatrical release, so there’s an argument to include.
Seriously, I love Star Wars beyond words. But I rarely marathon, simply because I don’t ever want to lose that special feeling of excitement when that music kicks in and the Star Destroyer thunders overhead. Ask me again around Thanksgiving, MAYBE...

I think it goes on a little long and could have been made a bit more interesting and simplified a bit (Maybe get rid of the "vote of no confidence" thing and just have it that it's set in the run-up to the usual general election and Palpatine is one of the candidates. Just to trim down and simplify it for kids) but I get why it's there. As a kid though, I found that section to be so boring.

They were badass and actually felt like a threat because even Jedi ran from them rather than face them in combat. It's a shame they didn't appear much and instead the Trade Federation was made up of the useless, standard battle droids.

Oh I am mostly talking about the main Trade Federation characters themselves, like Nute Gunray and the other guy. If you really think about Sidious's plan in TPM it doesn't really make much sense. He orders the Trade Federation to start this trade crisis on Naboo in order to do...what? There's so many moving parts involving Qui Gon happening to find Anakin and all of these purely by chance occurrences that there is no way it could be a formulated plan. I guess he was just trying to create a general instability in the region.
Palpatine's plot in AOTC is actually far more interesting. He basically through roundabout channels orders a clone army made while also manipulating the separatists (Trade Federation and whoever else) into a war, while also undermining the Chancellor and seizing power. This stuff is all very, very inside baseball though and no doubt flew over the heads of the small children in the audience. In fact I am still hazy on Sifo-Dyas and what his role was in all of this. I will say this though: The theater I was in LOVED AOTC. Around the time Dooku just kicked the crap out of Anakin and Obi Wan this goofy guy in the theater yelled out "YODA!!!" at the top of his lungs, right as Yoda's shadow was on the wall. The whole place erupted when he did that, and just had a blast during the climactic Yoda/Dooku fight.

Honestly they are just joyless turds to me at this point. I even soured on flippy shit Lucha Things Yoda after a few viewings.

I've just been watching CinemaWins videos on the prequels and have a bit more appreciation for them now. For me, I actually like that the Trade Federation are useless villains. This is the start of the downfall of the Republic because the Jedi have grown too strong and inflexible. They see some idiots they can slice through as the enemy while the real threat is on their doorstep and they refuse to even acknowledged it. Mace Windu even dismisses the idea of the Sith returning because if it was true OBVIOUSLY the Jedi would know. I also kinda wish that the little things that set up Jar Jar being one of the bad guys were true (mouthing other peoples' lines while making hand gestures), that would have been one of the greatest twists ever if they'd continued it.

Still think TPM holds up a lot of fun stuff in the movie.
Now for AOTC so many problems I like the Obi-Wan/Jango stuff and once they get to Geonosis
