I've stopped checking it regularly because everything is a video and on any device I use it seems to be slow AF to load.

I think they just ran out of shit to talk about. There were only so many 'Ten (Blanks) You didn't (BLANK)" you can write. Or stuff like "Five heroes that are really villains" or "Five villains that are really heroes"

I really feel like the site's decline though can be directly traced to David Wong becoming a successful author which caused more and more of the staff to try the same (I can't remember who it was, but one of them wrote this abysmally garbage book about a world where the internet disappears. Then he posted like 8 articles that were just excerpts from the unfunny piece of shit, and featured a character that was a straight-up stand in for himself getting it on with a super hot goth chick, because of course it did). That was Gladstone. Yeah that guy was consistently unfunny.

Cracked has been on a decline for a few years since they started doing too many click-baity, preachy, SJW articles as opposed to comedy, pop culture and historical articles. They were what made Cracked popular, I can't fathom why they deviated from that.
The personal experience articles were a great addition though. I enjoy them a lot.

The contributor I was constantly clicking the back button after two paragraphs while reading his stuff was Felix Clay.
Man his stuff was unreadable.

Agreed, I've been visiting Cracked every day for years, I still do out of habit, and it's gone really downhill. It used to be a funny, informative site, now it's overly preachy and a lot of the articles are downright annoying. They even had an article up claiming that the film Zootopia was racist for goodness sake. They do still have the occasional personal experience articles which are really well done.

He was the worst of cracked all crammed into one writer. It seemed most of his articles are factually incorrect, cherry-picking, taking things out of context and grasping at more straws than the Wicked Witches flying monkeys.

I still visit because sometimes there is a good pop culture article, I can't remember the last good historical article though (which used to be a highlight for me. Funny, interesting and educational). Yeah the personal experience stories are definitely the best. The two guys who do those should think about taking them elsewhere really because they are wasted on a dying site like Cracked. The Ted Bundy survivor one from a few months ago really was excellent.

Some of it has to do with the fact that they're going the route of getting the majority of their content from freelance writers over paid staff. The writers aren't necessarily bad, but a lot of companies then start to low-ball the freelancers, which leaves them with two separate pools of writers: 1) Experienced freelancers who generally charge more for their product. They're less likely to do the work for the smaller pay but freelancers sometimes HAVE to for the extra money, although they may not put the time and effort into a particular product if they feel they're being underpaid. 2) A big problem in the freelancer world I've found, inexperienced and/or underqualified writers willing to take the lower pay either because they're just starting and want credits or those whose writing skills aren't quite up to par. This hurts both sides because the articles may be lacking but it also gives Cracked a large pool of throwaway writers to choose from and validation for the low rates.

That was Gladstone. Just looked it up and though I honestly don’t remember any of the articles that were published from the book, the title of book was instantly recognizable. Cracked pushed that thing HARD. Like Vince shoving John Cena down your throat in 2005 hard. Apparently it was supposed to be a trilogy. No idea if it ever became one.

I remember even when Cracked was better he’d always get a lot of negative comments about him in threads like this. I can’t imagine many people buying his work, but maybe I’m wrong. Edit: Just saw your edit haha. I think everything in this post still applies though

I didn't realize they even had a regular staff. They paid 300 an article, with a bump up for a certain amount of articles accepted.

Or stuff like "Five heroes that are really villains" or "Five villains that are really heroes" I imagine Cracked's offices are a bit like this now:

I honestly mostly just went there for Seanbaby articles. All clowns are the minotaur. All clowns are the minotaur. It will never be your birthday again. His takedown of Heidi & Spencer may be one of the most brutally hilarious over-the-top critiques ever.
