I used to like video games, but the rapid rate of new systems coming out (some of which arent even backwards compatible, i'm looking at you PS4) is just too much. I've considered getting into PC gaming again, but now they almost all require a steam account, I just want something I can install and play. Sorry for being so cynical, but I just wish it could be simpler again. I still have a PS3 (i was able to get one of the backwards compatible models before they stopped making them), but I rarely even play that. EDIT: To be fair, I do play some of the games available at the itunes store (i currently have diamond quest, kingdom hearts, and that mighty magiswords app), but those are more or less something to do while listening to podcasts (however, if anyone wants to suggest some good games there, go for it, I like almost every genre except top-down strategy).

Basically every AAA title on the Switch so far has been a great balance of innovation and nostalgia. Plus the plethora of indy titles make the range of quality software incredible.
I was feeling the same way, have long given up catching up to the PC community, and haven’t really felt too strongly about any new major launches for PS4 and XBox, but then Switch has just been hitting it out of the park since launch.

Welcome to the club.
There was a time I could happily just sit down and play video games all day..It didn't matter what genre it was.
But My interest in Gaming has just plummeted. .It sort of began around the PS3/360 era and I just don't care today what big games come out.
The only Games I play now a days are racing games.
Maybe I'm just showing my age but this era of gaming just doesn't do it for me.

I think current games are fine. What I don't like is all this lootbox/DLC/microtransaction etc nonsence that ruins games.

Nothing wrong with backing up and playing older stuff until something new catches your eye. I have plenty of times I have nothing on the radar for me. Hell, right now even other than the FE Warriors DLC there is absolutely nothing on the horizon I can think of I actually want to buy until the next Ace Attorney game and the extent of available information on that at the moment is, "It's being made."

Try playing a game not a big budget one. Find an indie that perks up your curiosity and give it a go. There genuinely hasn’t been a better time for indies to flourish than right now.
May I recommend A Hat in Time? A lot of old 3D platformer sentabilities in a really well put together modern shell.

Most pc games are going to be connected to some plataform. Honestly i think a 3ds or a Switch might be the better choice if you want to just play.

I am in a similar boat in regard to triple A games I am hyped for. I'll be keeping an eye on Red Dead Redemption 2 news and although niche I am excited fro Dragonball FighterZ but that is it at the moment.
Then again I do a lot of back stepping to play older games, currently I am flitting between Planet Coaster, Mugen and a new game of Skyrim on my laptop.
While on the and PS4 and Amnesia, Injustice 2 & occasionally Battlefield 1 are my go to games.

I'm about 90% ready to be done with current-and-future generation games.
I'm getting older, and I've never been much for online gaming.
Not to mention I already have more older titles than I could ever hope to work my way through.

AAA style games used to mean high production values, excellent QA and high quality. Oftentimes a AAA game would have a high end IP attached to it like Star Wars/Batman/Lord of the Rings. AAA quality games were supposed to be the most complete and offer full experiences.
In less than a decade it morphed into unfinished bug fests with day one DLC, loot boxes, games that reach "abandoned" status yet they are still full price on the shelf and questionable online servers.
What the hell happened? I'm about ready to declare Nintendo as the last "old guard" AAA Developer/Publisher still standing. Now days you can find better "AAA" style games in the Indy market. They just won't have a famous IP attached to them.
I used to buy a half dozen games a year with pre-orders. Back when games were physical media and I could count on two fingers the amount of times I was burnt. Now? No reason to preorder. It's an outdated concept. It just seems like you are willing letting yourself get kicked in the balls by a greedy publisher.

I gotta agree, I have been trying again to play current games, but even the action/adventure ones seem stale. I've been trying uncharted 2 (i have the uncharted collection), and it's ok to me, being 33 yo, these games seem too long sometimes.
Honestly I'm more into much older games, before the system needed an update, the controller dying midway (I prefer wired controllers if it means I never have to care about charging).
Lately I've been into the arcade and console games of mid 80s to mid 90s, and its much more fun. I've never stopped playing games from the genesis, nes,n64/ps1, and I doubt I ever will.

It does have a platform you can install but it’s all DRM free and it’s only there as a way to group games up. There’s a lot more older games than newer stuff but it might help get the nostalgia up. Even with the latter, those two still have patches to download on occasions.

Testify Besides all the damn updates, this generation doesn't really entice me into upgrading. With the PS2 i could justify it as also being a DVD player which was pricey at the time, same somewhat with PS3 and BLU-RAY. This gen just seems meh, granted the newer premium models have 4K support, but since I have no plans to update my TV anytime soon, and so far only a handful of games seem to support it, I am happy sticking with the last gen at the moment. Also, the last gen consoles were of poor quality construction wise. My NES, Master System, Genesis, SNES, and PS1 have worked flawlessly out of the box and still function to this day. I had to send in my PS2, which was fixed for free, since it didn't read DVDs, and have bought 3 PS3s which is just unacceptable.

I know i will come off as nitnendo fanboy, but with my experience their products are really hard to break. God knows how many times i sent my 3ds flying to the ground and works perfectly. In the other hand x-box products are always the one I hear breaking the most

I have had 3 xbox360's. 2 went down due to the RROD. Luckily the 3rd one is a slim, but it may last a good while, especially considering I never touch it anymore lol.
That's the other thing, while I still love going back to genesis, n64, ps2. I am in no way nostalgic for XBOX360, maybe in 5 years, who knows. I feel like the PS2 era was the last generation of just old school, just play videogames, no connected online crap (I know xbox and ps2 could connect online, but it wasn't needed at all).

I have a SNES (and the Mini Classic), Master System, PS2, Wii, and Xbox 360, as well as a NES, Mega Drive, N64, GameBoy, PS1, Xbox, and GameCube in the past. Only one to ever crap out on me was the PS2, when the optical drive wore out. I'm about ready to declare Nintendo as the last "old guard" AAA Developer/Publisher still standing. They are, as far as I'm concerned. Nintendo still know how to innovate, and rare is it when one of their games is released not polished to a gleaming shine.

See, I don't even bother with game updates. I've only ever had my PS4 online once, to download a patch, and I have no desire to do so again. Basically, if a game is a broken and/or unfinished mess when released on disc, then I'm not interested.

I write for a retro gaming blog, so naturally this is the side of the fence I'm on.
Not that I totally cut out current-gen. There's still a decent handful of current-gen games I'll play, some of those being rather lengthy (Persona 5). But sometimes I do get weird remarks from people I party up with on my friends list when they all have "Call of Duty WWII" or "Destiny 2" as their currently playing game on the party menu and I have "Fighting EX Layer demo" or "Disney Afternoon Collection" or "Everybody's Golf" for mine.

When I first got my PS4, I almost gave up before I could play it. I got it for Christmas and of course they were having issues. It spent several days just siting there while I waited for Sony to send me an email so I could activate my console. Then I got to wait for three days while Battlefront downloaded.
I'm constantly running out of room to install a game. Of course I need to install the game and then I need the game in the console to play. Online gaming is fun from time to time, but if you get into a bunch of games with toxic people, it kills it. I told my wife that I don't think I'll buy another console for myself. It's just not as much fun as it used to be.
