I have a SNES (and the Mini Classic), Master System, PS2, Wii, and Xbox 360, as well as a NES, Mega Drive, N64, GameBoy, PS1, Xbox, and GameCube in the past. Only one to ever crap out on me was the PS2, when the optical drive wore out. I'm on my 3rd PS2. I wore the others out prematurely by messing around with swap-discs, though. Other than that, I've had a Game Boy and a 360 (Falcon Model) die on me.

What's keeping me from playing as much as I used to are the ridiculous install file sizes. I have played over 80 games on my 120 GB X-Box 360 and I still have quite some space left on the HDD. On my PS4 I've played maybe 10 games and the 500 GB HDD is full.

On my PS4 I've played maybe 10 games and the 500 GB HDD is full. I personally feel that the art of being efficient with data size has really started to take a shit as bandwidth and storage has gotten cheaper/larger. One of the MMO's I play requires over 60 gigs of local storage. Really?!?! Most of the data is just uncompressed art assets and sound files. Having uncompressed assets like that a couple years ago would have been seen as stupid and wasteful. Now it's becoming standard. I see it outside the gaming industry as well. We have all our construction projects stored in folders. 2012 was out busiest year with the most files.... 275megs. 2018 is about half as busy, we obviously haven't even started adding to any of the precon files and it's already 19 gigs. Our design files have exploded in size as the need to be efficient with data has gone POOF. I honestly believe this is going to be a huge problem someday soon. Especially if things start to get "throttled" again, companies will be scrambling to find coders/engineers that remember the art of being efficient with their data and compressions.

Happened to me like nearly 10 years ago while I had my Wii and 360. I'll occasionally fire up my girlfriends 360, but I dunno how people are able to keep up with all the games, downloads, etc etc ..

I generally only like the open world, build a life and save the world games these days. You know, Fallout, Skyrim...
I used to love the call of duty games online, but they've lost a lot of charm, or I've just outgrown them.

Each generation they try to apply this idea that this new system looks better than the last.
Honestly, I just don't care. I feel that gaming reached it's apex at PS2 and everything since then is window dressing. After PS2, there wasn't any limitations to what you could do.
That said, I haven't bought a system since Wii. The Switch seems enticing, but overall I feel there's nothing there that I haven't already experienced.
I haven't bought a new game since Skyward Sword. Despite all the mouth watering graphics that reviewers lost their mind for, I grew bored of the game about 6 hours in. I ended up deciding to play the original again for the 20th or so time. I haven't touched Skyward Sword since then.

Red Dead Redemption, Skyrim, the Assassin's Creed series, GTA 5, and Fallout 3 have eaten up months of my life. I still play Call of Duty, but I've never cared for online play. As long as the campaign is solid, I'm in.

See my thing is, I have limited time to play games being and old piece of shit, having family obligations and the like... a lot of the time, I'm too tired and would rather just sit back and watch Netflix or YouTube rather than play a game. However, I'm still as interested in games as I've always been and this leads to the problem where I get a new game... play it a little bit, then a newer game comes out so I get that.. and end up with a ton of games I love but never play because they're not my flavor of the week. So of course I suck at all of them because I don't stick around any of them long enough to become a part of the game itself... then I rage quit... it's a vicious cycle.

For me, it is all of my friends and relatives religiously playing First-Person Shooters. A yearly game calendar would be Call of Duty for like 4 months, then Overwatch for a few months, then Call of Duty releases a DLC, so that gets some play. Then Destiny does a DLC and that gets play. Then Overwatch has a double XP weekend. I tend to buy a game per year to participate, but because I don't have 12 hours a week to up my character and acquire better equipment, I am easily beaten against those with more experience.
For me, time was you could get like 6 people to play the newest WWE title and have competitive matches. Now, I've gravitated towards playing alone and perfecting my roster, but having no challenge against AI. It's why I have slowly grown to appreciate Fire Pro, because there's so much customization, its like EWR meets 16-bit games.
I have begun to look into what indie developers have to offer more than usual. I also play older systems to kill time. Neo Geo stuff, especially Super Sidekicks can kill a few hours, which is why I game in the first place.

Neo Geo stuff, especially Super Sidekicks can kill a few hours, which is why I game in the first place. I don't know how SNK/SNKP/SNK again managed it, but the Neo-Geo has managed to achieve this sense of legendary timelessness where nothing about it ever looks or feels outdated to me.
