I'll be confused. He's got no one left to wrestle, he's got the longest reign ever AND he'll have the most days as champion ever. What the heck is the point of keeping the belt on him?
Plus, the booking seems obvious to me: Put the belt on Naito, Naito drops to Kenny this summer, use the G1 to build to Omega/Okada 4 at Wrestle Kingdom to finally settle this thing. Get the Ibushi/Omega title match on a featured show too.

I’m going for Okada. I know he’s not going to win. But I’d dig it if he won.

Now, this is mostly just from having to put together a picture from hearing what others say, but...
I get the whole "But Kenny has to beat OKADA for the Title for it to mean the most" thing, but ugh, putting Naito away again would pretty much solidify Okada as being Mr. Boring Invincible Champion, no matter how many stars Meltzer gives him. It doesn't really seem like there'd be much of anywhere else to go with him after that.

Like the words of a parent: I wouldn't be upset, just disappointed.
There is nowhere else for Okada's reign to go, and this Naito story is probably the best long-term storytelling I've ever seen in wrestling. Sometimes the most obvious ending is the best. Naito deserves to win in the main event of WK after his journey from the 2013 G1 Climax to now.
Also, I know people think it's bound to happen in the next year, but I'm not a fan of giving Omega the title at any point in the future. Let him hold that US title for as long as they'd like, but keep him away from the IWGP Heavyweight belt.

I would hate it. Not because I hate Okada, far from it. But at that point, we would be six G1s deep in the "contract shot" era, and the G1 winner would be 0-6 at the Dome. People talk about the Rumble being devalued/meaningless due to how often the winner loses, but imagine if the winner lost EVERY GODDAMN YEAR. That's my problem with Okada retaining.

Personally I don't enjoy his work all that much. He's good, but just...there. His best stuff for me was his match with Haruka, which gives an idea of how I see him. But that is just me.

If Okada wins he'd quite possibly be moved into a more heel role as the guy everyone wants to be champ doesn't get through but Gedo's boy carries on. You'll be moving into WWE territory with the Authority vs the underdog but CHAOS as heels and LIJ as reluctant faces would be cool and also it'd change the whole company's structure. Where would Bullet Club lie, what would Tanahasi do?

After WK I don't want to see Okada anywhere near that belt again for at least 2 years.

I wouldn't be surprised. It's Gedo.
However, this is absolutely the time to pull the trigger. Okada has the longest reign ever, the most combined days as champion and every other accolade you could think of. Naito's first reign being just 70 days to go back to Okada was highly disappointing and this will be 100x worse.

Okada is too nice but come on now. It's time to strap the homie Naito up

I'd be pretty stunned, but at the same time would have faith that there was an end goal in the booking that would make it logical. Worthwhile? That'd be a different question. That said, it's friggin' Okada. Dude just gets one of these as he keeps rolling:

Well, I was certainly stunned that it happened, but still well-earned:

The scary thing is that Okada's post match promo seemed to hint at them doing this again next year at WK. First, I didn't especially think it was that amazing of a match compared to last year, and 2nd how is anyone supposed to care about Naito now that he jobbed clean in his quest to get the title back and main event the Tokyo Dome in a match 4 years in the making?
See, the problem with NJPW wanting Okada to be some modern day Inoki or whatever is that pretty much anyone with a working knowledge of NJPW knows Gedo is booking and that he is also Okada's second/manager. So even a naive fan would realize Okada is Gedo's boy and Gedo is just booking him to win all this stuff. Japanese fans haven't turned on him yet but if NJPW is serious about expanding in America do they seriously think having a guy in the longest reign ever that is management's chosen one is somehow a good idea?
