The toys were rad. I had just about all of them I think. Sewer, technodrome, van, blimp (which popped within the first week), April O'Neil with her easily broken leg.

Huh .. TIL TMNT is barely older than me. No wonder I loved it as a kid.

By the time the Fred Wolf cartoon started I had been reading the Eastman and Laird comic for at least a year. It wasn't until a few years ago I really started to enjoy the Fred Wolf cartoon.

By the time the Fred Wolf cartoon started I had been reading the Eastman and Laird comic for at least a year. It wasn't until a few years ago I really started to enjoy the Fred Wolf cartoon. While I grew up on the Fred Wolf series (born in '84), I later discovered the Mirage series and honestly grew to resent some of the Fred Wolf stuff. The head writer, David Wise in particular. There was a great documentary that came out a couple of years ago, but on it Wise claimed to have been responsible for giving the Turtles unique archetypes such as Leonardo as the leader, Donatello as the brains, Michelangelo as the free spirit, and Raphael as the wiseass. All of that had been well established by Eastman & Laird within the first 6 issues of the comic.

But it is was a lot more like the Mirage series. Speaking of the Mirage series I am now just 5 issues away from a full set. Sure the early issues I got reprints. But it is actually the later issues are super hard to find with tiny print runs. I didn't get into the Fred Wolf cartoon,I was born in 74,until my girlfriend got the boxed set of the entire run. Watching it with her I saw that while it was different it was a decent cartoon for the era.

I still have so much love for this show. While I do appreciate Mirage for being the start of TMNT and did like the 4kids cartoon, this show gave us Krang, Bebop & Rocksteady, Dimension X, Hamato Yoshi-Splinter, a lot of really cool mutant heroes and villains, and a kickass theme song.
Not to mention how quotable it is.
