Randy lay there like a slug. It was his only defense. In the second movie nobody remembers, he literally turned into a slug. I don't know why they made that third film for TV. It was a crime against nature.

But there were 1-2 D2TV or barely seen in theaters follow-ups to ACS, before that....THING that Warner put out on DVD a couple years back. The former were more "official" as they too came from Jean Shepherd's writings, and Shep did the narration all the same. My ACS urban legend? Ralphie really did say the F-word in the original theatrical release. It was changed to "fudge" with the narration for VHS and cable, and stayed that way since.

I wasn't being sarcastic; you mention to fans of Jean Shepherd's works about A Summer Story/It Runs In The Family, and they look at you cross-eyed, even though the whole plot of that film also came from the Christmas Story memoir. My main issue with that one was that Randy went from "Ralphie's dimwitted brother" to "boy so dumb he has to be reminded how to breathe" in that film (complete with him going "I wanna get sick! I wanna get sick!" and eating the family goldfish).

Been a fan long before it was cool. The sad thing is, I don't remember whether or not I was taken to see it in theaters originally. I have a strong memory of going to see it, but sometimes I mix things up. I do remember being obsessed with the slide scene when TV spots showed it. So...anyone see the musical last night? I only managed a half hour of it, will probably check it on demand in full to do a review. And this will be of interest to fans of the movie as well: www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDkHULYv0B4First saw the film when it hit HBO. My aunt recorded it for me and my father and I would watch it every year near Xmas. I do wonder if CMT is gonna do like last year and marathon Xmas Story 2 all day long.

Now I was young when I first saw it,but I swear I remember Ralphie saying f*** and not fudge. I chalk it up to my memory not being the best.

I like this film, and I plan to give it a watch on Christmas day. While I remember a lot of the film, the part that stood to me was when Ralphie beat the living hell out of Scut Farkus. If I was tormented like that, I would do the same thing.

Just finished watching it again.
There isn't a single movie out there that captures a child's build up to Christmas better than this movie. Times change, but if you can't relate to a good portion of this at some point in your life, I sincerely apologize for your childhood.

I've only ever seen this movie on tv, but never from beginning to end in one sitting.
Actually, I don't think I've ever seen the ending.

The first time I saw this was in school. I thought it was awesome. Years later I suggested my parents rent it. They loved it. Now I get burnt out on it very quickly. I hate that they show it over and over again on a marathon. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing.

When I was a kid before the marathon's started every year, one of the local TV stations would always show it once during the holidays, and that's how I originally saw it. While I do think its a good movie, I'm personally burned out on it, I've seen it enough.

I dig the movie; don't watch it over Christmas Vacation or Die Hard, but it's in my annual rotation along with flicks like Gremlins.
My dad always sees the scene where the kids are getting their winter coats on and it's like he gets slightly traumatic flashbacks to being stuffed in one of those things.
Moviebob's "Really That Good" for Christmas Story is well worth a watch, too, gives a nice layer of appreciation for the thing and some of the thematic elements it hit on really well.
Fun fact: Jean Shepherd was brought in by Disney to be the father in the updated (circa-1994) version of the Carousel of Progress at the Magic Kingdom in Florida.

Hey, this place looks familiar! Yep, I toured the very house that was used for exterior shots of the film! The inside looks exactly like it did in the movie, with a large Christmas tree in the living room and (of course) the leg lamp in the window. You can crawl under the sink just like Randy did. Across the street from the house is a small museum with posters and costumes from the film, as well as a gift shop. I knew that Bob Clark played Swede, the Parkers’ neighbor who asks about the leg lamp. But until I went on the tour, I didn’t realize that he’s wearing a Miami Dolphins hat! Obviously, the Dolphins didn’t exist during the movie’s time period. And neither did blue bowling balls, even though Ralphie’s dad gets one as a gift. That's pretty neat. I live a few blocks from the actual home they grew up in. They have a leg lamp in the window and a few lights. The house next door is some weird Adobe style. The school is about 10 years old, they tore down the building that looks like the one in the film when my daughter was in 1st grade there.

At one point this was my favorite Christmas movie, I had seen it a lot before the marathon even started. Then the first couple years of the marathon I watched it a lot of times in a row. My family thought it was funny, so I forced myself to do it for a few more years. Now, I am pretty much over it, I have just seen it too many times. But, it is definitely a flick that paid a big part in my childhood.
