Picked this up on blu ray for a buck. Didn't see it in theaters (neither did anyone else...zing!) but figured eh a dollar, why not?
Cinematography looks nice most of the time though the CGI is janky a lot. Luke Evans plays the role well, and casting Dracula as a sympathetic character is at least an interesting concept.
There's just something lacking though. Story wise it's just kinda eh, and outside of Vlad you don't care about anyone. And the arbitrary thing about him having to resist blood for 3 days is a bit corny.
It's a shame; with a more engaging script and/or characters this coulda bee really good. As is, it's not bad really, just sort of passable.

Was this supposed to be the jumpstart to Universal's monster cinematic universe until the Mummy reboot?

Was this supposed to be the jumpstart to Universal's monster cinematic universe until the Mummy reboot? There were reshoots done to put this in the Dark Universe, but I think they have since stated that it is not part of the Universe HOWEVER they are open to having Luke Evans back as Dracula

Was this supposed to be the jumpstart to Universal's monster cinematic universe until the Mummy reboot? Kinda, yeah. It wasn't initially planned to be the start of the Dark Universe, or even by the time production wrapped. The present-day scene at the end of the movie was written and shot during reshoots as a window to include the character in The Mummy. In the end it bombed, so Universal scrapped it altogether and began totally fresh with The Mummy. And we know how that turned out.

It was watchable but I have zero desire to watch it again. I didn’t hate it but I didn’t love it either. It’s just meh to me.

Isn't the dark universe now completely canned? As far as I know, yes, but this was before that.

Had a bunch of free rentals at Redbox and rented it. Watched it and as soon as it was done forgot it. Do remember it looking nice but that is it.

Isn't the dark universe now completely canned? Unofficially, yes. The follow up to The Mummy, a Bride of Frankenstwin movie, has been shelved indefinitely.

Yeah, I pretty much had the exact reaction you guys had: "that was alright; never need to see again."
Like I said though, it felt like there was the skeleton of a decent movie in there somewhere. They just didn't really put anything on that framework to care about.

Was this supposed to be the jumpstart to Universal's monster cinematic universe until the Mummy reboot? this was the SECOND attempt at starting the Dark Universe. (or well the Universal Monster Universe) The first was the Wolfman remake. Yes, they have tried and failed 3 times to make people want to see this universe.

When as we've mentioned before, you don't really have to build to the Universal monsters. People know who Dracula, Frankenstein et al are. If you wanna make em fight, just do it.

I, Frankenstein at first at least sounded like it could be interesting: The monster has survived to modern times and is trying to make his way in the world, and Eckhart is a good actor. I remember thinking I might have to check that out. Then the first trailer hits and I change my mind.

Yeah, people know Dracula, Frankenstein, the idea of Mummies, werewolves, and I think they'll get fishpeople pretty easily... Phantom and Quasimodo shouldn't be included in your idea unless it's meant to be a period piece... as they are very much of their time. I, Frankenstein at first at least sounded like it could be interesting: The monster has survived to modern times and is trying to make his way in the world, and Eckhart is a good actor. I remember thinking I might have to check that out. Then the first trailer hits and I change my mind. The world wasn't ready for Sexy Frankenstein... talking about how much of a gross freak he was

It's the 4th when you take into account the Hugh Jackman Van Helsing flick was meant to kick something off too, I remember NBC/Universal going so far as giving a green light to a TV spin off before the movie even opened
