When the NBA G League has a full 30 times that are tied to an NBA affiliate I think we'll see a version of this anyway. I think the NBA should move to requiring players to do 2 years college or 2 years G League. Would incentivize tanking less. Also I think players should have the option to go pro after high school if they choose to, but having them start in the G league with smaller scale contracts and mandatory classes about money management and stuff like that would help them a lot.
Adopting the baseball model wouldn't be a bad idea as far as having prospects in your "minor league system" in which you would allow guys coming straight from High School to earn money and if they are good enough than they will be on the NBA roster
Of course there's a lot of little details to hammer out but it can be done
The problem with a minor league system is that basketball is the most superstar-driven sport there is.
With football, you can have the best player on the field, but you need 11 people who know their role perfectly to win.
With baseball, you can have the best player on the field, but it only slightly makes the game easier and you need other great players to really make it work.
With hockey, you can have the best player on the ice, but if the goalie gets hot then it's worthless.
With basketball, though? If all things are equal otherwise- or even slightly inequal in the other direction, if one team has the best player on the court, THEY WILL PROBABLY WIN THE GAME.
That alone makes a minor league system moot- anyone good enough to be a superstar could instantly contribute to their team, and anyone who isn't a star enough to make rotation on an NBA team probably never will with all the minor league time in the world.
