Always been more of a fan of the Bundy one myself Never seen all of the original film, but have watched It's a Bundyful Life ever year on Xmas eve since it first aired. I prefer the Beavis & Butt-Head episode where he is told to murder the two. Admittingly, I dislike this concept very much. I hate how often its used and its often played straight as "Oh, so its a hellhole without me". That's why I like it when they do it where nothing changes or (in the two examples above) life gets better.

I think I could do something like this... like "bob's seen" I have thought of doing that. Lots of fairly popular films I have never seen... Top Gun Pretty in Pink Batman Returns And plenty more.

That's why I like it when they do it where nothing changes or (in the two examples above) life gets better. My favorite was the finale of the original Dallas show. JR's about to shoot himself but an angelic being arrives and shows him how everyone would have gotten along without him. Except everyone had much better lives. Shaken, JR asks "What sort of angel are you?" only for the angel's eyes to glow red and reply "Who said I was an angel. Do it!"

From what I remember hearing it was a major bomb in theaters and critics didn't particularly like it either... and only got popular because it was cheap to air on TV so they did constantly when they needed to put something on the air during the holidays

Ah it may be schmaltzy and cliche, but I love this film all the same and try to watch it every Christmas season. James Stewart and Donna Reed have great chemistry and it has a great moral about the values of friendship and being a good person.
It's not without its flaws though. It always bugs that such a huge deal is made of Mary's fate in the dark timeline: "Oh no she never got married, the horror!"
At least shes got a stable career and didn't become a prostitute like her friend Violet or trapped in a loveless abusive relationship. Both of which would have been a much more effective narrative then the one we got.

When your movie has enough of a moral compass to annoy the McCarthy-era FBI, you know you have something worth watching.
And while it's done through a relgious/fantasy lens, it's enough of a cool conceptual take that sci-fi is the best place to look for its influences. Even beyond Red Dwarf wearing its heart on its sleeve with the influence it took (especially in the books), would we have stuff like Back To The Future 2 without this film?
