I'm wondering what people on here think about this. When I say legit, I mean the game is just simply really hard, it's not handicapped by bad controls, or terrible glitches and the whatnot. I know there are the obvious choices, like Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, and Ghosts & Goblins. Those are some of the more famous examples, but what other contenders are there? I'm interested in other people's opinions on this.

As in games released this year, Cuphead is my first pick.
It gives you a fair chance but the game is a lot of trial-and-error to figure out how best to defeat each boss.

I've tried some of the harder games from my childhood and been able to get through them, but Bart Vs The Space Mutants is such a failure of design, physics, playstyle and logic that it's near impossible to even want to beat, let alone try to.

I remember Hydlide for the NES being a pain in the ass.

I beat it once. Had to look up how to open the gates in the nuclear power plant. Game's way too difficult.

Contra and Battletoads are often referenced among the most difficult games.

Contra 3 for SNES is insane. For real. Even with the save rewind feature it took me forever to puzzle my way through beating the first level on the SNES Classic, not dared to try beyond that yet.

Ninja Gaiden. Ninja Gaiden all day, the trilogy on the NES was such a pain. Fun, but damned difficult. Starts out easy enough on the first level, but difficulty ramps up quickly.

Resonance of Fate
Huge learning curve, little leeway if you f*** up, multiple battles with no opportunity to save or heal in-between all make it fiendishly difficult.

Crush & Homing, Crush & Spread or Homing & Spread are your friends.Y But yeah, Contra 3 is an unmerciful bitch of a game as is Hard Corps and Gradius 3. Oh god, Gradius 3.

I'm hearing a lot of people saying Contra 3, so maybe we should spice things up and suggest... Super Probotector: Alien Rebels?
