Going through Season 2 of NXT on the Network the past few days, and the second batch of rookies are so lame compared to Season 1's. You have Michael McGillicutty/Curtis Axel, who talked about bringing Ruthless Aggression back, but wrestled a technically sound match in the ring, Kofi naming his fans the "McGillibuddies" which got an "Oh my lord" from Cole on commentary. Kaval was awesome in ring but when he was given his mic time to convince the crowd why they should vote for him to stay, he pandered and patronised with stuff like "together, we can do this, together we can win NXT". Though he had awesome chemistry with Laycool as his pro's.
Riley was decent on the mic with his jock character, even though the pro's buried his gimmick with "It's 2010 and he's still wearing a varsity jacket?". Husky was good, had a mean streak, but though he's found himself now as Bray Wyatt, I don't think the dude even knew what he wanted to be then. Less said about Eli Cottonwood the better after that awful mustache promo - "I don't have a mustache, but none of these other NXT rookies can grow a mustache like mine" - WHAT??
Lucky Cannon was just awful. I mean, dude had a good look, but he pandered as much as Kaval and kept doing the sob story promos which halfway through the season started turning the crowd against him. Titus was awful in ring (still is), wasn't much better on the mic after he froze with his "Make it a Win" promo, but his post elimination promo was excellent.
The only one I really thought had potential was Percy Watson. Dude had it all - he was athletic, charismatic, could think on his feet for a 30 second promo (which makes his awkwardness on commentary in NXT now so weird), his main flaw was how green he was. In my opinion this was by far the lamest bunch of rookies they brought up from the then FCW at the time.

And yet... it produced the same number of World Champions as NXT season 1!
Which is a condemnation of the booking of Wade (and to a lssser extent Ryback) more than anything.

"Oh, so he's a heel now?"
Cole gave none of the f***s, even then.

That messy beat down segment in the final episode capped off by Percy Watson's evil 'Oh Yeah!' was the defining moment of 2010

I remember at time, a lot of us thought highly of Alex Riley and expected a bright future. We were wrong...

They were part of the NXT season 2 finale though, the single finest program WWE has ever aired.

yes. I swear I'm not making this up. I remember Alex Riley being considered the epitome of the "Developmental Clone Generator" running amok, but I'm also not gonna turn this into an Alex Riley thread. Those things suck.

As far as this discussion goes, in my opinion, Ryback was the bigger missed boat as far as this goes. He was insanely over and should have ended Punk's reign in the fall of 2012. Ryback's overness is a forgotten bump on the road, especially considering what he is up to now, but man that still seems like such a blown opportunity to me.

I like to think Alex Riley sucked so much he was the catalyst for Vince just going "ok we're done with the clones stuff, sign whoever you want Hunter."

yes. I swear I'm not making this up. Yeah he was pretty over. His promos and persona were both pretty good. People on the internet were into him. But this was also in 2010 when a large part of the main roster still consisted of homegrown FCW guys and the eventual surge of talent influenced by Punk/Bryan would ultimately leave him in the dust. But yes for a time Alex Riley was pretty well over.

At least we'll always have "The Genesis of McGillicutty".

At least we'll always have "The Genesis of McGillicutty". Has anyone ever said what was SUPPOSED to come of this promo? Obviously it got shelved after the atrocious ending, but were they supposed to be like "Nexus 2.0"?

Punk was far and away the hottest act the company had at the time, and tying him up with Ryback and later Diesel when Cena and The Rock were in the wings was foolish at best. Not to mention Ryback was green as hell and dangerous in the ring.

No kidding, Ryback is the biggest victim of the Cena vs Rock being forced for all stakes, including the title, when it wasn't needed

Diesel was the Summer and Fall of 2011, before Punk's long title run had even begun (although after the Pipebomb). Ryback didn't even debut as that character until 2012, and while I agree that they definitely shouldn't have put him over Punk, that's because they shouldn't have pushed him to the title yet.
