I work for a certain superstore chain, so we were closed on Christmas. But I firmly believe within the next ten years, we will be open on Christmas Day.

I'm not sure about labor laws here, but is everyone entitled to be paid for the day off from work if you are not working? I believe it's called holiday pay?

I work for a certain superstore chain, so we were closed on Christmas. But I firmly believe within the next ten years, we will be open on Christmas Day. I was telling my wife this the same thing. In the DC area, a lot of the McDonalds were open at least until 5-6 PM, some of the 24 hour ones were open like a normal day. The Asian restaurants make a killing on the 25th, and there were still CVS stores open. There was a Starbucks or two that were open until 4. I agree with you, I would not be shocked if in the next 5-10 years we'll see just about everything open at least on a 8-9 hour schedule. Just look at Thanksgiving, as far as I can remember everything was closed on Thanksgiving day, then we got "midnight" openings, then 10 PM, now we're up to 6 PM openings.

Locally the only place open on Xmas to eat at was Waffle House. Talked to a friend that worked Xmas morning and she made almost 200 in tips. The few gas stations that were open were packed. We had to goto 4 different ones last night trying to find heartburn meds and cigars.

As an employee of a movie theatre I've worked every Christmas. Worked last night and it was absolutely bonkers, then again, we're always busy on Christmas as with the exception of Waffle House, IHOP, Walgreens, and Circle K gas station we're the only business open on Christmas Day.
Needless to say I prefer working on holidays. I don't do anything and seeing my parents are nearing retirement, me being thirty-six, and not having any kids/wife just makes me not mind working honestly. I know a lot of people hate working on holidays but I simply don't mind it.

When I was younger, I worked for a supermarket that would SAY every year that they'd be open for Christmas (it was, and still is in a location with a relatively high non-Christian population that would call and complain about the store not being open), but then never actually went through with it, because the vast majority of front-end employees were under 18 and refused to work that day.
To the best of my knowledge, they're still not open on Christmas, even after all those years of weighing the option.

Years ago,2004 IIRC,a Dollar General a friend managed was told they were going to be open Thanksgiving Day. Whoever worked got double time. So my buddy and one other person ran the store from 8am until 6pm Thanksgiving. They had one customer, who bought a 2 buck item. And until a few years ago I never saw another DG open on Thanksgiving.

I work with vulnerable persons in foster homes and I often go away for the holidays but most of my family is overseas and the ones near me went on a xmas vacation to austraila.
Pretty much got paid for 12 hours to eat turkey and watch movies for time and a half pay.

I have for American Express in Australia. It was very quiet and depressing and because the other departments were closed it was annoying. I was pretty much just telling people to call back tomorrow all day.
