I’d love to hear some people’s memories and thoughts on the storylines in the promotion. A lot has been said about Cornette’s efforts to run it as well as comparisons made to his later work in ROH. However, a lot of the storylines and stuff seem to be largely forgotten.

Never got to see much SMW when it was airing. But going back and watching it in the late 90s/early 2000s I loved when Bobby Blaze won the SMW world title.
EDIT-How can I forget to mention the great run of Hollywood Bob Holly. I am more than likely the biggest Bob Holly fan in the IWC and even I will admit his SMW run was crap.

I can only imagine that people who compare SMW and Cornette's ROH have never saw one or the other.
My favorite deal was actually from the first year, with local legend Mr. Ron Wright as a manager in a wheelchair. Hilarious but it had a lot of heat.

Motherf***er actually had the nerve to ask for donations. Cornette said they raised like fifteen bucks. For someone that despises hardcore wrestling, Cornette actually booked the most violent bullshit I've seen in my entire life. Kevin Sullivan spiked Brian Lee for like ten minuntes straight, blood was all over Primetime, babyfaces and heels tried to save Brian but Sullivan and his henchmen attacked them. Then the cameraman and other staff tried to intervene only for Sullivan to hit them. The announcer Dutch Mantell, a heel, said that this whole thing happening in the ring was bullshit and somebody should stop it. Then the best part about it was commissioner Bob Armstrong running to the ring and giving Brian Lee CPR... I still don't know how they werent kicked off the air. It was great. I wish a hardcore promotion would do something like that.

What he despises is light tubes and mouse traps IWA mid south type stuff.

Cornette also promoted barbed wire matches in SMW. He wasn't always so anti gimmick matches, when there was money to be made.
The best period for SMW was mid-'93 to early '95. A lot of the early stuff prior to that period is on the Tube for You. Hopefully the guy who uploaded those continues with the rest in the future, as it was really the best stuff once the main crew became Rock N Roll Express, Tom Prichard, Jimmy Del Ray, Dirty White Boy, Chris Candido, Brian Lee, Tracy Smothers, Chris Jericho, Lance Storm, Gangstas, Cactus Jack, Boo Bradley, Bobby Blaze, Buddy Landel.

I just want to say Tim Horner is in my list of top worst promos ever. It is painful to watch.

I just want to say Tim Horner is in my list of top worst promos ever. It is painful to watch. If you watch them and pretend that it's a rib on Horner, it's hilarious. Cornette continually put Horner against guys who could talk - Dirty White Boy with Ron Wright, Buddy Landell, Chris Candido with Tammy, etc.

I love listening to Jim Cornette shoot on Tim Horner. From what I can tell, he gave the pud a job just to be nice, and it IMMEDIATELY went to Horner's head.

When the WWE Network added some SMW I binged watched it. It contained the firstof what would become several moments from the archives where I said aloud "You can't say that!" It was New Jack (surprise, surprise). He said something to the order of "I'd like to shout out to my brother O.J. Keep up the good work. That's two down if you know what I mean."

The vignettes of Tammy Fytch (to a modified version of "Gonna Fly Now") and Kimberly ("She Works Hard For The Money") to build up the back alley brawl was great stuff. Tammy doing the bare minimum (running, telling Chris to stop the car, then steal it from him) and them Kimberly training for a real fight. Tammy is scared for her life watching that.

I tracked down the Thrillseekers hype vids one night. They're just so delightfully cheesy.

I'll be honest - I didn't have a way to watch SMW when it was around, but reading about it in the Apter mags, it...well, it bored me. It just seemed like the same old tired names I'd seen mostly as midcard acts for the whole ten years prior (the Armstrongs, Landell, the RnRs, Dutch, Fuller, Smothers, etc.) - if I come across an episode now, it can be a good time-waster, but just never have been able to get fully into it. I wish a hardcore promotion would do something like that. Can't forget the "Where's Tom? I need to talk to Tom." angle. Cornette had no problem with hardcore wrestling so long as it was Southern promotion-style hardcore. Mid-South, Memphis, that kind. The big weapons/blood spots made sense in their setting.

Haha there was once a long segment about Horner recording a song, Rubin then yelled at Cornette that Tim Horner would never be allowed to sing in the show again. Jim admitted that going with Horner was a huge mistake and that he was featured so much because Horner was in the office and was responsible for merch sales and finding sponsors, sadly Horner wasn't any good at his duties and allegedly stole the ring truck.

Well, he booked a wrestling mummy because Rick Rubin wanted a wrestling mummy. When the guy paying the bills wants something, you throw him a bone.
