Why was he not a bigger star? He had the size and look. Imagine him in the ring with Hulk Hogan!

Kareem/Ray Candy as well as his Zambuie Express partner Elijah Akeem/Bad Leroy Brown should have had better careers, but it just wasn't in the cards, I suppose. One of my very first wrestling memories is watching Kareem teaming with Kamala and destroying people in Mid-South. For some reason, Kareem by himself was referred to there as the Zambuie Express, with no mention of his former tag partner. One thing that might have hampered Candy was his weight gain; he was getting bigger and bigger almost every year. The team itself was probably a factor too; two huge black guys claiming to be militant Muslims and Black Panthers in the early 80s wasn't going to get them booked on some shows. Shame, though, Kareem was fun to watch during his Memphis "talk show host" stint.

For a while, Lawler had a bit on the Memphis show called the Jerry Lawler Show where he acted like a talk show host interviewing guests. For some reason, Lawler was out for a while and Kareem forced his way into taking over the show:

Saw him as "The Superfly" in World Class recently on the Network, and was bummed he didn't stick around a little longer. The gimmick was stupid, but he was a good big guy.

Farrooq tells a story on Table for 3 about how he got freaked out because he was staying in the same hotel as I think an NoI meeting, and they ran into him and wanted him to give a speech. Not exactly the same, of course, but still...

Instead of making One Man Gang into a clown, WWE should've signed Kareem and made him Akeem! Imagine the promos! Teaming with Big Bossman! Wrestling against Hulk Hogan!
Oh, what might have been...........
