He-man & the Masters of the Universe is the bestest cartoon/action figure series there ever was. As you may be aware, every doll came with a mini-comic, usually featuring the character you just purchased. As you may also be aware, Dark Horse Comics released a compendium of all those mini-comics some years back. If you loved/grew up with the series, I highly recommend it. Nostalgia off the charts. But I'm reading it and come to this panel: and I laughed. Slow down Evil-Lyn, it's a kids comic.

I actually have the compendium on Comixology. The most interesting ones are still the earliest ones that pre-date the Filmation series. So many unique takes on characters that don't appear in any other version of the Master of the Universe mythology. He-Man as a barbarian warrior from a "jungle tribe" wandering Eternia fighting evil, blonde Teela who's a magical clone of the Sorceress, the Sorceress herself who may or may not have green skin depending on the issue, Skeletor as a wizard from another dimension, and Castle Grayskull and the vehicles in general being remnants of a bygone, advanced civilization that was destroyed in an apocalyptic war that drove Eternia back into a dark age civilization. Very captivating stuff just to see what could have been.

Yeah, before they establish the mythos, it's WAY more Conan.

I need to get that Dark Horse collection. Loved how the early figures comics were written. Seem to remember a kids book set in the same continuity, but that might be faulty memory cause I was 10 or so when I read it.

Well this includes a couple of books that came with a cassette and stuff like that, so yeah I'd say you're probably accurate on the kid's book.

Very captivating stuff just to see what could have been. Yeah, before they establish the mythos, it's WAY more Conan. Nah, I feel it's way more Thundarr the Bararian, especially the barbarians-after-civilization-falls part. For the best they changed it, really, because as cool as it was, that first wave's continuity wasn't going to work on a long-term basis as a kids property. Mattel's MOTU years are a quagmire of conflicting continuities. The original mini-comics, the revised mini-comics, the 1983 DC run, the Marvel STAR run, the Brazilian series, the UK series, the Filmation cartoon, and the live-action movie are the eight "big ones" but there's at least a few more. Over a dozen continuities, all within a five-year span...that's pretty impressive in all the wrong ways. Whereas Hasbro was very tight with its characters and basically only allowed two continuities each for GI Joe and Transformers (with most things like childrens books and such capable of falling into one or the other), Mattel didn't give a damn and just let licensees run wild. And then add on the space revival continuity, the 2000s revival continuity and the MOTUC continuity, which tries to combine ALL of them into something cohesive. Oh and then the more recent DC run, which has at least two different continuities within it.

That's fair, I was mainly using Conan for a catch-all for 'Barbarian' rather than the specific character.

That's fair, I was mainly using Conan for a catch-all for 'Barbarian' rather than the specific character. Good reason for that, too - Mattel was approached to do Conan action figures but passed on the idea, and then debuted He-Man the same year. A lot of people contend that Mattel just stole the idea and made it their own, but there's enough records and design work still around to show they had been tinkering with a similar idea for 3-4 years prior and the Conan thing just made them kick things into high gear. Funnily enough, Conan ended up going to Remco, whose line just looked like MOTU knock-offs.

Right. I also had the Blackstar figure which ended up coming across as a knock off, even though his series came before.

Fun fact: In the current all-inclusive MOTUC continuity, Evil-Lyn and Skeletor knocked boots and had a kid. Evil-Lyn then took the kid into the near-future where there wasn't a Skeletor (he was dead for a while at the time) and raised the child, who became...Skeleteen, arch-nemesis of He-Ro, aka He-Man and Teela's son Dare.

I'd groan at the Skeleteen name, but you know EVERY other name in the line..

I'd groan at the Skeleteen name, but you know EVERY other name in the line.. It was hilariously stupid when the character was debuted - there's a major He-Man message board, probably 'the' He-Man board, and everyone was up in arms about the dumb name when it was revealed, but some of us were all "Guys, they have characters named Snout Spout, Two Bad and Clamp Champ."
