Let's say I'm an indy wrestler just starting out... is there any particular protocol to going "Hm, I'm going to use this as my finisher", or is it more just you use what you want? Mostly curious if there's any sort of protocol for choices of finishers on the indy scene, or like, if a newcomer would have to run their finisher past the established guys to make sure they weren't stealing anyone's signature moves or anything.
And "public domain" moves, I was thinking more just in terms of say, the Cobra Clutch and Superkick and just moves that are so ubiquitous that there's not necessarily as strong of an association versus say, someone starting out and deciding they're going to use the Pedigree. I have to wonder if it would be seen as more of a bad thing to be using a very common finisher versus a finisher intrinsically linked to an established wrestler, but at the same time it's not like people are expecting every new wrestler to innovate their own finishers.

It's about who is on the card with you.
Plenty of guys use brainbusters as mid match near falls, same with superkicks, but you're not going to say that if Austin Aries or The Young Bucks are on the card because that's their trademark spot.

Plenty of guys use brainbusters as mid match near falls, same with superkicks, but you're not going to say that if Austin Aries or The Young Bucks are on the card because that's their trademark spot. This used to be a lot more true than it is today. These days, guys are a lot less protective of "their moves", unless it's something REALLY signature. For example, if you're booked on a show with the Bucks, they don't give a shit if you use some superkicks. They didn't invent the move, nor are they even the most well-known guys to use it. Now, if you straight up start spamming them in the "Superkick Party" fashion, that would probably cause a problem. Now, if somebody used the Meltzer Driver, THAT would be an issue. Not only is it their finish, it's also a move they invented. As far as actual finishers, it generally goes by who is higher on the card. Like, if you have 2 guys who use the same cutter as their finish, but Guy A is in the main event while Guy B is midcarding it up, Guy B is generally shit out of luck in terms of using his usual finish.
