So remember that story about the Superman prequel series focusing on Superman's grandfather?
Here's the first trailer.
According to the press release, the guy in the hoodie is Adam Strange.

Man, I have absolutely no idea why anyone would watch this show. You know every single character in it going in dies in a fiery explosion, assuming they're not dead already before that point, and even beyond that the idea of some political thriller about Superman's grandpa and his girlfriend Zod's grandma is just completely stupid.
I mean, Gotham's enough of a leap but at least there's some basis to do something there and Batman doesn't have as a central part of his backstory that the city was nuked.

I think a story about a civilization hurtling towards its own demise while actively trying to silence those doing the warning could be eerily relevant in these times, but this does not look good.

I know what happens to Saul Goodman, but it doesn't stop Better Call Saul from being one of the best shows on TV. Not saying this is going to be anywhere near as good as Better Call Saul, but it could be a decent waste of an hour a week.

The knowing what will happen eventually doesn't detour me. It's the fact it's a show about Kal's grandfather that is meh to me. I have this strange feeling we're going to have all these characters who should have no business being there at that time showing up to boost interest. (see everything in Gotham)

I mean, Gotham's enough of a leap but at least there's some basis to do something there and Batman doesn't have as a central part of his backstory that the city was nuked. They talked about the actual idea for the story and it's still kinda dumb... but they did add a hinge to it to make a story of it. (though I am not a big fan of them adding Zod's grandparents too...) Adam Strange tells Grandpa-El about the imminent destruction of Krypton but also about Superman. and it's more of does Grampy-el try to stop the destruction of Krypton and basically doom Earth (and you know potentially not be believed) or know that everything is gonna blow up. But I don't know how much of a long running series could be made of that. The knowing what will happen eventually doesn't detour me. It's the fact it's a show about Kal's grandfather that is meh to me. I have this strange feeling we're going to have all these characters who should have no business being there at that time showing up to boost interest. (see everything in Gotham) That too, I'm going to think there's probably going to be too much of that "we all went to college together!" trope that annoys the crap out of me.

Never a big fan of Krypton based stories in the comics. I did like John Byrne's take on the culture as this sterile, provincial race that might have been hyper-advanced but were too far up their own asses to realize their planet was dying or to have the methods to escape their ultimate fate (sans the iconoclast Jor-El).

Depends on the version. Originally they didn't at all, Clark getting to Earth was pure chance. Byrne era, Jor El at least found Earth enough to be able to view it and see that Kal could survive and thrive there.
There you had one of the worst parts of Smallville where Jor El straight up visited the Kent farm in the past. I liked that show a bunch, but MAN there were some corny, awful elements.

In a lot of versions krypton flat out banned space flight. Due to an old incident with someone blowing up the moon.

Kryptonians are pretty cavalier about moons:

There was also apparently a comic post Crisis pre Flashpoint that revealed that somehow, Jor-El got to talk with Thomas Wayne.

"So.. you have a son huh?"
"Yep."
"Is his mom's name Martha?"
"..No. Why?"
"Mine's is."
"Ok."
"That's why I was wondering if your wife's name was also Martha."
"Oh. Well, no."
"That's a shame."
"..Why?"
"Well it just seems like if both our son's mother's names happened to be Martha, it'd be important and significant."
"How would that be remotely significant? It'd just be an interesting coincidence. Lots of people are named Martha. But my wife's name is Lara."
"Well, I still think Martha is a better name and would really affect our sons if both their mothers were named that."
"Ok. I'm going back to Krypton now."
"Ok, see ya later if we don't both meet tragic ends that will define our sons lives."

It looks ok, I assume they're just borrowing a lot of the MoS iconography, because it's going to be tough to explain how they got to the look of Krypton in the movie on that budget. I just don't know how I feel about the whole "Oh, your planet's gonna die someday and your grandson is going to be the universe's greatest hero, so try to act surprised" angle. I would have been happy with it just being about Krypton's rise and not had to drag Superman into it indirectly. But DC is really bad at forcing it's bigger heroes into shows lately (See Powerless).
Also, David Goyer is responsible for this, so it's going to be naturally terrible anyways.

Wasn't part of that storyline that Jor El was kind of evil, too? I had checked out of the show a little before then, when Clark was starting to form the Junior Justice League, and I saw that Jor El was now a part of the cast, and I was all "No thanks."

Well in the episode I'm talking about, Welling played Jor El who visited Earth some decades before. Regular Jor El was kind of a douche when he appeared though. you took the good: Welling, Rosenbaum as Lex etc with the bad: WAY too much focus on Lana, Metropolis and Smallville being like fifteen miles from each other etc.
