It's much easier to think of things that are still appropriate. So..Sesame Street..maybe? Elmo was a pedo. It's out. What!?! lol Tickle me Elmo doesn't mean what I thought it meant??!!

It's pretty amazing to me that South Park (which I will forever be a fan of) is still on the air, with the way attitudes have changed since it first came out. Well that's had protests and threats from day 1, no change there then.

The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air has shitloads of scenes where Will is supposedly being a ladies man, but now it just comes across as a creepy dickhead harrassing random women in school, malls, restaurants etc.... I have a different take on thia - that was just the 90s culture. The cool kids in my high school would chat up girls just like Will and no one said it was creepy. You also needed that swag for the girls to want to be seen with you. I do think we need to stop applying a 2017/18 lens to certain things that were relevant at the time.

Anything that mentioned fire or tuesday or planes in the titles were suggested not to be played, even if they were perfectly innocent songs (ie, Jimi Hendrix's "Fire", "Ruby Tuesday" by the Rolling Stones, Steve Miller's "Jet Airliner", etc). Heard from a buddy who was a radio DJ near the MS coast after Katrina that the station passed around a list of songs they couldn't play. Stuff like... Scorpions-Rock you like a Hurricane Katrina and the Waves-Walking on Sunshine and a few others. No idea if this was just at that one station or if it happened at more. I can understand not playing "Rock You Like a Hurricane" for a bit of time after Katrina, sideline that song for a week or so, but Katrina and the Waves?

But that's the whole idea of this thread, things that were ok before but aren't now, can have that debate in other places, but this specific thread is literally where we say things that wouldn't be ok today.

Everything at this rate.
Honestly, in 20 years time expect shows from the 80s and 90s to be heavily edited or erased from the airwaves like some pre 80s television because they don’t fit the current climate of what’s offensive at that point in time.

And to show how times have changed. Back in the day Walmart refused to carry the Beavis and Butthead Experience CD. But I have found copies of Dead Kennedy's Frankenchrist album at Walmart. And a few NOFX albums there too. Plus you can buy films like I spit on your grave, the original or remake, and Last House on the Left, original and remake. It was a few years after Katrina before they started playing New Orleans is Sinking by The Tragically Hip on the radio again.

You Can't Do That on Television would be all kinds of wrong. The firing squad skits alone would ensure the network buries all evidence this ever existed.

I don't get what you are saying. Fresh Prince reruns will get me fired from my job? It's a TV program of its time. It's part of history now. It did reflect what high schoolers were doing at the time - which really is just a part of growing up and coming of age - hormones kick in etc. I really don't see how it should be offensive or inappropriate near 30 years later - especially when the same programme had bastions of morality and responsibilities in the Uncle Phil and Aunt Viv characters. You take away from it the positive lessons and also appreciate how not to behave around women in malls.

Is it being said it inappropriate to see an attractive woman at the mall or at school and ask her out? I ask because that's what has been referenced that Will did in this thread. The yo baby yo baby stuff was a product of its time and came off a little corny even then, but seriously, it's now considered inappropriate to approach a stranger, introduce yourself and ask for her phone number?

Not really? It's only harassment if you continue to badger the person after they tell you to leave them alone. Or if you're just like cat-calling them. There are ways to start conversations with people besides using "Hey nice tits!" as an opener.

In 2018, the fresh prince would clear his throat, avert his eyes and discreetly shuffle a contract of consent over to a fellow female human being he wanted to develop a healthy relationship with over an undecided length of time. Way less creepy.

There are ways to start conversations with people besides using "Hey nice tits!" as an opener. That was my point. Will shot his guns but I never saw him sexually harass or assault someone. The episode where he attempted to trick Kim Fields into believing they were married purposely portrayed him as a dude trying to scumbag a chick but realizing he had too much conscience for it.
