Every now and then, I like to pop up like a "congratulations, you won virus" and talk about everyone's favorite monopoly, YouTube. In the past, I've talked about some of the more questionable decisions on YouTube in recent years, like Advertiser Friendly Content, and The YouTube Heroes Program.
Well, just like a Smashmouth meme, the decisions just don't stop coming. This time, the subject of controversy that is on the mind of the YouTube community is Monetization.
If you are a Youtuber, and you get a certain number of views on your content, you can actually make money off that. Some of the very best have made millions, and have made making videos their living. And one of the things that YouTube likes to talk about all the time is that they are a platform that allows small creators to grow and develop. WELL- _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
To sum it up, as of today, small creators have gotten an Email from The YouTube Team, explaining that:
. They will no longer be getting money off of their videos if they have not obtained 4000 hours of watch time from viewers over the last 12 months.
. They will no longer be getting money off of their videos, no matter how many views they have gotten, if they have less then 1,000 subscribers.
. They have one month to reach these two requirements. If they do not, not only will they no longer be able to make money off their videos, but they will not be able to become YouTube Partners, and access the features of being a YouTube Partner.
Basically saying, if you are not already a top star, or at very least, a rising star within the YouTube community, you are f***ed as a creator.
But those are my thoughts, what are your thoughts on this latest move by YouTube?

YouTube only caring about their top guys and telling the little guy to piss off, so the status quo.

4000 hours!
That’s 76.9230769231 hours a week.
FFS .. I don’t think let’s say Netflix provides that much original content in a year.

4000 hours is between 166-167 days' worth of content. What the hell?

Though when you add in the 1,000 sub minimum, assuming they're all active viewers, they only need to accumulate 4 hours a year each. It's not a great cap, but it's not insane relative to their requirements.

I mean, if you're trying to create a channel that makes enough money to be worth doing, you've probably got 1,000 subscribers and while I don't at all have deep knowledge of YouTube's inner workings, even a couple 10 minute videos that reach 1,000 views would probably put you over the cap. And if you're trying to make any decent amount of money through monetization, you're likely doing at least a little bit better than 1,000 views per video.
I dunno, of the things harming new creators being able to be properly compensated for hard work, this seems a bit lower on the list to me.

Maybe this will be what drives someone to make a good alternative to Youtube. DailyMotion is decent, and pays better. But runs like crap on lots of computers and devices and isn't as well known. Keep hearing Vid me is good but never tried it out. Vimeo is ok,but like Daily Motion isn't well known.

This isn't even going to affect Logan Paul's bottom line. He just got a slap on the wrist. Guess they got to promote that movie he's in.

On the one hand, I get that it sucks if you're not making videos full time and were hoping to get money for it, but on the other hand, Google can do what they want, and if they're not willing to spend money on that anymore, it is what it is.

Honestly, at this point the only way we’re going to get a really viable YouTube opponent is the same way we’re going to get a viable Facebook opponent; a company of the same size and money who hasn’t done either doing their own version. There’s a reason a lot of Facebook and YouTube clones have had to close down the last few years.

I compare Youtube to a gold rush. If you got to San Fransisco at the right time, you probably made a ton of money. But once the gold ran out, you were kind of screwed. Youtube has never really made a profit and advertisers are leaving. You can't expect to make a living off of your GTA commentary videos, just because.

Youtube constantly screws the up and coming talent and slaps the big "important" channels on the wrist for doing something wrong WHILE punishing the other channels, which is basically what is happening here.
Money aside the Partner Program gives perks like custom thumbnails and recommended feed placements. It's already tough enough for Youtube to include you in sub feeds that they had to add a notification bell, this is going to further stagnate the possibility of newer channels croping up
Thank goodness I have over 1100 Subs but I need to reach the watch time, when I start making more videos I'm hoping this can be possible... but in any case, it's just another thing in a long line of Youtube screwing up.
Good thing I use Patreon for a main source of creative income like most...

So yeah, basically if you don't already have a seat at the table you're basically boned.
On an aside, I'm not surprised to see Youtube get stricter with their qualifications for who can become a partner, and I only see this as the starting point for it getting stricter in the future. What I really dislike is that they let it get so bad in the first place that now they're throwing a whole mess of people under the bus to cover for their poor policies.

This is some Mr Burns "Have the Rolling Stones killed" logic from Youtube. Don't go after the people actually causing you controversy and dropped ads, punish the smaller channels instead.
