And if so what sport would it be?
Perhaps an expansion team? I think that would be more likely than a pre-existing team moving there since Providence isn’t a huge market.

I am not sure that would work for any of the big four sports right now. There is very little room for expansion right now and there are much better markets that the leagues are already targeting. Relocation is always happening but I am not sure it would be a sexy spot given both the existence of other markets and the feeling that it is too close to Boston to establish a presence. The city also might carry a stigma as a minor league market since it houses two of them. What I could see however is a team starting there if a new league tries to start something (maybe whatever Vince tries with the XFL). You never know where those teams will operate so anything is possible.

no too small and too close to Boston. unless it was a new league like Vince's XFL that located them in Providence and called them "New England"
their best chance was in 1998 when the Patriots needed a new stadium, but the people who lived in the neighborhood where the stadium was going to be wern't happy. (and it might've been a bluff by Kraft anyway, with what happened with the later proposal in Hartford)

Rhode Island can't even agree yet on how to fund the building of a new stadium for the Paw Sox (the Red Sox's minor league team).
Not to mention the fact that a video game company practically tanked the state's economy for like 10 years.

I would prefer the return to Glory for the Pottsville Maroons.

Not a chance. Providence is 52nd in television market size (behind such cities as Harrisburg, Grand Rapids, and Albuquerque) and nearly every fan in Rhode Island is already loyal to the Boston sports market. There's no use in placing an expansion team there or relocating one because the fan base is already content with watching Boston teams or making the 30-to-45-minute drive into Foxboro/Boston to watch the Patriots, Red Sox, Celtics, or Bruins. They're a perfectly acceptable minor league city, as evidenced by the Providence Bruins (the AHL affiliate of the Boston Bruins) or the Pawtucket Red Sox (the Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox), but there's just not the appetite for a professional sports team based in Rhode Island. The sad truth is that Providence, in almost every way, is essentially just a suburb of Boston. They're the little brother to Boston and they know it and seem perfectly fine with it. Rhode Island can't even agree yet on how to fund the building of a new stadium for the Paw Sox (the Red Sox's minor league team). Not to mention the fact that a video game company practically tanked the state's economy for like 10 years. There's this too. Not to get too deep into the politics of it, but the people of Rhode Island got fleeced on a bad deal about a decade ago and are totally unwilling to ever try anything again. They have, for all intents and purposes, a really solid deal on the table to keep the Pawtucket Red Sox in Rhode Island (there's murmurs of the team relocating to Worcester, Mass. if the deal falls through), but the entire state can't get out of its own way and are doing nothing but fuss about how they got hosed on Curt Schilling's video game endeavor a decade ago. It's like a guy who got cheated on 10 years ago and he just absolutely refuses to ever date again. At some point you want to grab him by the shoulders and shake him and be like, "You need to f***ing get past it and move on."

I first thought of the college, I'm thinking they will when DePaul gets good again.
Then you said National like a sports league. Maybe when the NBA brings back the Hammond Ciesar All-Americans.

Bring the whalers back from Carolina!!! It'll be worth it just for this: It may be a semi-joke post for this, but honestly- IF Providence were to get a national sports team again (and it's a big IF due to the problems), it will be an NHL franchise. Providence is one of the biggest American hockey cities in the US right now as it is, with Providence College as a success in college hockey and Mount St. Charles high school being the gold standard in American high school hockey and one of the only American high schools that can compete with Canadian junior hockey, and Providence has also been a strong city for women's hockey traditionally. The Providence Bruins are a fairly successful AHL franchise. The Dunkin' Donuts Center has been renovated more recently than the XL Center in Hartford had (with people saying Hartford as a big relocation candidate due to the Whalers previous existence), but the Bruins are more successful than Hartford's AHL team. Even the "it's the 52nd biggest market" thing is a little surprising for NHL purposes- Providence is 52nd, but Buffalo is 53rd (and has an NHL team), and other comparisons of the Providence market put it as comparably sized to Milwaukee, which is considered a possible expansion/relocation destination for the NHL.

Speaking of hockey, I once pondered it as a relocation site for the NY Islanders since at one point it seemed like everyone but their owner wanted them to get off of Long Island. However, it looks like they’re tied there for at least a few more years.

I think he was the only one in the city who wanted it. Even that, though, does go to another side of this that people don't usually pay mind to on a national scale: Foxboro is basically the midway point between Boston and Providence as it is. Nationally when the Patriots play at home, you're more likely to see shots of Providence then you are of Boston. For a lot of traditionally big events the Patriots play in, they're more likely to have Providence be the host city then they are Boston, and they also use TF Green Airport, the Rhode Island airport, as their destination to and from games. It's not hard to argue that Providence ALREADY HAS a National Sports Team: The New England Patriots. The Patriots don't use "Boston" as the tagline and do use New England, most signs for the Patriots are closer to Providence than Boston, and if "But Foxboro's in Massachusetts" is the issue, then no one bats an eye at the Giants and Jets playing in New Jersey either.
