See, I don't always have an issue with this. It's just that most of the examples just seem forced. Wonder Woman got over just for being freakin' Wonder Woman. Changing Thor's gender, or the Ghostbusters ordeal are just not as organic. Neither is this. And one of the above posts makes a good point. If GAH is not partially played for laughs like the original, why bother? As I said, just dig into the Marvel mythos and you have lots of characters to make a new show about. Wonder Woman has always been a woman though. How was changing Thor to a woman or the Ghostbusters not organic? Thor is based on old myth and overall those carry the Mjolnir is worthy. The original Thor was no longer worthy. I've never seen the remake to Ghostbusters. It didn't look funny to me, but it got WAY too much hate just because it was women. Who cares if it was women or Seth Rogan and company? I was referring to the WW movie. |

'The Source'
It's Greatest American Hero. Even its biggest fans would recognize it's a cheesy comedy show. But even then, if a nebbish gets an alien suit and then wackiness happens, that IS showing respect to the 'The Source', it's the same damn concept.

I felt that if they were going to bring this back, this could be a breath of fresh air and not be dark like the other superhero related programs and movies-it's relate-able-a "hero" that isn't exactly sure what he's doing.
My question with this is, are they going to keep pointing out she's a woman and of Indian descent? If so, that doesn't sound like they are going for light and are just wanting to make a point.
From what I can tell, they don't even know who's going to be in it, except she will be a woman and an Indian-American

There's nothing 'inorganic' about giving the GAH suit to a woman. The property hasn't been around in any viable form for over thirty years. This isn't some status quo altering thing that's coming out of nowhere and flying into the face of continuity or blah blah blah. This was a dormant franchise where a company's goin: "Wanna bring that back? Might make some money off some name recognition." "Ok." "How bout if the suit wearer has ovaries?" "Ok." Is some of the change rooted in trying to get some more eyes/money? It's the entertainment business, EVERY decision is looked to to get some more eyes and money. But this one, if it even comes to pass, has a pretty harmless one. The concept is: regular person gets a hold of a fantastic suit. They're kind of a nebbish, and the suit doesn't come with instructions, hijinks ensue. Not one thing in that premise requires said nebbish to have a dick. And again, this is a series that ran for three seasons 35 years ago. There's nothing 'organic' about dusting off a dead franchise in the first place to be honest. It's just trying to bring back a concept that does at least have some pop culture name and doing it again. If you're gonna do that, why not put a sitcom actress in the lead role? Doesn't harm anything, concept is exactly the same, could be fun. All of this, but the bolded especially. GAH was, for all intents and purposes, a dead property. If someone's going through the trouble of bringing it back, I say give them full reign over what they do with it. |

Just create new shit. That's all. People would be amazed at the amount of agenda-based bellyaching and counter bellyaching that would no longer occur. I can guarantee you that in the next ten years, many people will look back on the people complaining about "political correctness " and alleged forcing of a "diversity agenda"- and they're going to be mocked. Because too much of that rhetoric has been tainted by racists and sexists who don't give a crap about seeing new shit being created. They don't want to see female characters, characters of color, or LGBTQ people on their screens at all. That crowd doesn't want anything to do with newer superheroes like, say, Kamala Kahn/Ms. Marvel. Popular characters should be open to different reinterpretations, anyway. If there's no concrete reason for a character to be a straight white male, unless it's a case like Steve Rogers in the 1940s where it makes logical sense, then producers should be able to cast any type of person they want to for the role. I don't care if Superman is Hispanic , or if the latest GAH is a woman or if they want a Black woman to use Tony Stark's suit. As long as the character is likable and fun, I'll give the newer versions a chance. Superman's not even human. As long as his skin color is anything that a human being's skin color is (for preserving the secret identity), it's completely irrelevant to who he is. |
