Nick Dinsmore was considered to be a well rounded in-ring wrestler. However, after a number of years stuck in WWE’s developmental system, OVW, Dinsmore had to develop a character to stand out from the crowd of prospects. Soon enough, he came up with the idea of a mentally handicapped man who just so happened to be an accomplished wrestler after watching his favorite wrestlers on TV. GM for the Day Eugene with his ball pit office was one of the funniest things ever I do wish they played up the "wrestling savant" aspect of it a bit more, that really fell to the wayside in favor of him just being a a lovable goof.

My favorite return of The Rock was when he came back to put a stop to Coachman's bullying of Eugene. You could tell the crowd was so sad for Eugene, and were excited to see Rocky give Coach what he had coming. Awesome moment.

William Regal was absolutely brilliant during all this His Raw promo on Triple H is my hands-down top moment on the mic of all time. Don't exactly remember, but I'm sure Regal was squashed by Tri the next week during their actual match.

And then Eugene showed Rock his gratitude by saying Tripple H was his favorite wrestler.

And now, he's running a wrestling school and promotion here in Sioux Falls, SD, and is married with a super-hot wife.
I think he won in all of this.

If he hadn’t been struggling with personal demons at the time, I think Dinsmore would have been a sure thing for TNA’s early X division.

It was a unique character that could have gone horribly wrong, but he made it work. I used to get genuinely upset by people being mean to him.

The whole idea made me deeply uncomfortable. The relative success of the gimmick aside I think it was a poor choice to use it.

Sending him out in front of that ecw crowd was the stupidest decision ever.

All I know is that if they make a movie about this, Michael Sheen better play him.

Eugene's initial story arc was one of my favorites in wrestling. I love the gag of HHH being his favorite wrestler, and especially the way the babyfaces sold that fact, and the dread they'd eventually have when Triple H inserted himself into Eugene's life. That character could only go so far but for that short while I really enjoyed it.

His odd couple run with Regal was magic. So was the Ballpit, The Rock helping him against Coachman, and the musical chairs.
Unfortunately I also remember the exact moment when Eugene's career died. It was Summerslam 2004 and his opponent was Triple H. The crowd hated Eugene and cheered for Triple H. Dinsmore admitted in his rf shoot interview that everything went to shit after that match, because he and the company realized that without the comedy and in a serious program with a main eventer, Eugene just didn't belong there. Unfortunately the character had a ceiling and there was nothing you could do with him afterwards.
I agree with something Jim Cornette said about the whole Eugene run, that Nick Dinsmore by himself should've been featured and he was able to be a main event star, but unfortunately Eugene while popular at the beginning, it actually hurt his career in the long term because he was never booked in anything important after Dinsmore got fired from the company.

A properly executed heeel turn where Dinsmore admits he came up with Eugene to get out of development purgatory and how he conned the fans into liking him would have been enough to get him over as a heel and out of the Eugene character. I know it's not the most original plan but knowing there was a way out of a tired face character might have been enough motivation to keep Dinsmore on the straight and narrow.

Corny also explained the appeal of Eugene and why it didn't lasted more.
He said that fans liked when the stupid guy outsmarts the evil heels, but when he stops outsmarting the heels the fans realized that he's stupid.
Eugene went from an important role in the show to becoming a jobber in a short time.
