I’ve just got back from holiday so I’m a few episodes behind. I’ll catch up soon enough - this post WMX era is one of my favourites, so it’ll be good to relive the memories. So I’ve caught up with the episodes now; Kwang got a title match, let alone TV time? I agree with you that a lot of heels had been killed off as threats, but Kwang was the best they could rustle up? Good God...

Next week we are recording KOTR 94 (we tape two per day to allow some free time). So, what are your memories on the KOTR 94 PPV? I'm sure there are plenty of Art Donovan memories.

I’ve been looking forward to this! I remember very little about the matches other than Owen winning, Neidhart turning heel and the Piper celebration with the gawky teenager.
Art Donovan, however, has remained burnt into my memory. ‘How much does dis guy weigh?’, ‘Who’s dis guy here?’, ‘Is dat allowed, Gorilla?’
I can’t remember which match, but at one point you can audibly hear either Savage or Monsoon sigh in exasperation at another Art Donovan question. Savage, in fairness, actually tries to help out by answering some of his questions but Monsoon gave up about three matches in!
Who would you blame, though? Art Donovan for not doing his research, Savage and Monsoon for eventually leaving him for dead or WWF officials for not briefing him beforehand? His U turn on Razor Ramon winning the tournament (at the start of the show) and then losing (in the final match) makes me think that officials should have either briefed him a lot more or called time on him on the headset a few matches in.
I’m looking forward to your feedback on the show, guys - Austin’s especially!

Bruce Pritchard talks about on a recent "Something to Wrestle" episode covering KOTR 94, that they wanted Art because he played football in Baltimore and he would be good for the live crowd. Why didn't they just have him as a ring announcer or cover one match?

Next week we are recording KOTR 94 (we tape two per day to allow some free time). So, what are your memories on the KOTR 94 PPV? I'm sure there are plenty of Art Donovan memories. Outside of Art, and the abysmal main event, it was a pretty good show. Bret vs Diesel always showed just how good a motivated, and not wrecked by injuries Nash could be.

Next week we are recording KOTR 94 (we tape two per day to allow some free time). So, what are your memories on the KOTR 94 PPV? I'm sure there are plenty of Art Donovan memories. Considering Art Donovan is such an easy target (though it is still fun), let's be remiss and explore the main event of KOTR 1994, shall we? The "New Generation" was made primarily as a buzzword by Vince to tell people that the days of Hulkamania and the Rock 'n' Wrestling Connection were trite and outdated, and that we're now pushing youngins', dammit! So, how do you build up your PPV event in the midst of all this where Bret Hart is once again your champion, you have a jealous and vindictive Owen Hart wanting to make his life a living hell, and down in the midcard, they were grooming Shawn Michaels for the future (I kinda have to go with the usual suspects since the New Generation didn't make a lot of stars... most of the acts were gimmicks that were dead on arrival, be they people moonlighting from other careers, "ex-sports stars", or more outrageous characters in an attempt to get another Undertaker to happen, which was one of the New Generation's many failures)? By focusing the event around a Jerry Lawler/Roddy Piper feud. I mentioned this quite a bit on my take on this when John Pollock and Wai Ting did their old Review-a-Wai on the event, but it does bear repeating; the way the whole match was built was illogical. Piper didn't want to fly anywhere other than King of the Ring, so all of his segments were filmed in his ranch in Oregon on what looked like a budget camcorder. Meanwhile, Lawler did his usual shtick, insulting Piper's filmography and bringing out some beanpole dressed like Piper that was never identified besides "That Kid" or "That Parody", complete with the segment being around Lawler having said fella gladhand his insults and worship him, which is typically a heel act where the heel brings out a parody version of his opponent that willingly takes the abuse. This is made even weirder considering this person comes out with Roddy Piper for no rhyme or reason, as there was no segment or mention explaining why he would do so as we know Piper did not do any live segments on RAW. Then the match. Piper was both immobile and his usual "no selling" self, while Lawler was his "only knows two moves" self, and by then, the real star of the show, Art Donovan, was told to pipe down once and for all, meaning we were denied any gems about how much did Jerry Lawler weigh or why are people cheering for Roddy Piper since Art Donovan probably once saw, I dunno, "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show", to which Art would probably call it "the Mario Marios"? It's also weirder that Piper won; not because he was a babyface since WWF was a "babyface territory" and you gotta send the fans home happy, but considering that this was Piper's last involvement with the company until January of 1996, while Lawler would go back to commentary shortly after, which conventional logic would dictate you'd have the guy sticking around get the nod. Then again, Roddy Piper rarely lost for most of his career and wouldn't start doing clean jobs until WCW. As for a non "weight" comment by Art, I do like how Art was all for Razor Ramon that night and then, come the finals, he suddenly goes, "I... I think Razor's gonna lose." only for Gorilla to snap as if Art was spoiling the finish.

No love for 123 Kid vs Owen Hart? I love that match too but its really short This. I expected one of those early round matches with lots drama like Bret/Perfect the year before. It was good, but could have been better by being longer.

It could, but I kinda like it's as short as it is, kinda made Owen look killer to me, especially with it beginning with the best baseball slide spot of all time.

"How much does this guy weigh?!" We've made it to the 1994 edition of the King of the Ring. Who will be the next King? Can Roddy Piper save the kids from the Canadian hospital? Who will arrive to be in WWF World Champion Bret Hart's corner against Diesel and Shawn Michaels? How much nonsense can we handle from guest commentator Art Donovan? All these questions are answered this week on ICOPOD! icopod.podbean.com/e/episode-79-wwf-king-of-the-ring-1994/
