He directed films such as Shirley Valentine, Alfie, Educating Rita and probably most famously three Bond films; You Only Live Twice, Moonraker and The Spy Who Loved Me. He was 97 and had been in poor health for some time. RIP Mr Gilbert. Watching your duo of Roger Moore Bond films on TV in the 80s were the point when a very young boy fell in love with the James Bond series. link

That's an impressive filmography. I'm quite a 007 fan I kinda feel ashamed of not knowing he directed one of my favourites. (Moonraker. fite me)
May he RIP.

...he directed one of my favourites. (Moonraker. fite me) ... I think he's attempting re-entry, sir! That movie is delightfully corny

He lived a long, accomplished life and 97 years is nothing to sneeze at. As a Bond fan i salute you Mr. Gilbert.

Wonderful career, thank you for bringing us great movies.
Rest in peace, sir.
(Have to admit, saw the name and was puzzled as to which one of the original "Revenge of the Nerds" cast it was, Robert Carradine (Lewis) or Anthony Edwards (Gilbert).)

rip mr lewis gilbert, director of probably the most quintessential bond movies in the seventies TSWLM ..... and i almost went to see MOONRAKER in the cinema too!
but his directorial listings before that was stellar too, some of my other olde favourites are his too ..... THE ADMIRABLE CRIGHTON and SINK THE BISMARK, but REACH FOR THE SKY and CARVE HER NAME WITH PRIDE will always be his greatest!

Its a shame Moonraker was bad, because Gilbert was a great director for Bond. He had elaborate sets and locations, which helped his films. After Moonraker, the series started cutting back on all that and as much as like some 80's Bond, the series suffered from it.
