So they're doing a league thing or what?

So they're doing a league thing or what? Kinda. The robots will fight up to 4 qualifying matches, then they select 16 robots for a single elimination tournament for the title. Many people are assuming the robots who go 4-0 or 3-1 in the qualifiers will of course be selected, so it’ll come down to the 2-2 and 1-3 robots to fill the rest of the spots.

OK, I was trying to figure out what's going on with the weird setup. Also, not happy too see that Blacksmith lost. Kinda biased towards it since it is sponsored by one of my favorite metal labels, Nuclear Blast Records.

HOLY. SHIT.
Also, good to see Ray Billings is sticking to what won it all last year and not make needless hits.

Good lord, so much destruction this episode!
SawBlaze almost completely cutting Overhaul’s crushing beak in two, a rumble where technically speaking all three robots were KOed(even though Buttercup was still moving, because War and Pestilence were KOed, the majority weight for Four Horsemen were out and thus they would have been out had there been enough time for a count out), War Hawk demolishing Axe Backwards, going head on into a 100+ pound drum like it was nothing, Whiplash kicking Hypothermia’s ass, and of course Bite Force KOing and completely gutting Hypershock of all of its internals with just two freaking hits(honestly they won with just one hit, because on the replay you can see just a huge storm of bright orange sparks consuming the inside of Hypershock as it was being flipped over, meaning it was dead before it landed from that hit).
Simply fantastic episode.

Simply fantastic episode. Also, Double Jeopardy may have already cemented its status as having perhaps the most useless weapon in either BattleBots or Robot Wars history. I do agree with the decision for Four Horsemen, though, seeing how much damage the two mini-Tombstones did even if Gamma 9 did knock them out. Nice to see Ian Watts redeem himself after the disaster that was Creepy Crawlies in 2016. Also, HOLY SHIT, BITE FORCE.

Tombstone completely SLAUGHTERED Gigabyte. As in, "Knocked off the bit holding Gigabyte together in one hit and then cleanly removing the spinning dome the next" slaughtered. It was so bad that Gigabyte's team was begging the ref to stop the fight (even though there was no way Ray Billings was going to try to finish it off himself because 1. under the circumstances, that would have been extremely shitty and 2. Tombstone's frame took a big beating from Minotaur so he's going to be fighting like he did in 2016 the whole way now).
I really do not see a bot capable of denying Billings another championship right now.

I really do not see a bot capable of denying Billings another championship right now. I dunno. I think he wants to avoid fighting DUCK! at all costs. When Ray’s bot Last Rites fought WHOOPS!, which is basically DUCK! without the duck theme, WHOOPS! tanked the hits from Last Rites, sending it flying through the air violently multiple times, and eventually Last Rites just shat its guts out. And that isn’t even touching upon Free Shipping, aka Original Sin with a forklift on it. Original Sin is also a robot that has repeatedly tanked hits from Last Rites and beaten it. Plus you know robots like Yeti. Tombstone is still gonna be a tough exit, but with a warped and broken frame, it is gonna be easier to beat. Especially since Tombstone usually isn’t in this state until late into tournaments. The fact that the tournament hasn’t even started and it is already like this means it wouldn’t be shocking to see it lose.

Last Rites looks to have an even horizontal spinner where Tombstone now has the one that sweeps across the ground. That could make a big difference when they face each other again (and if the first episode was any indication, Duck! is Tombstone's last opponent before seeding).
So far all the main events have been overshadowed by an undercard fight to me.

To my joy, my service has Science Channel on demand and Battlebots is on there with the bonus material. So here's what happened:
Episode 1: Sharkoprion defeats Kraken and Deviled Egg via double KO: Sharkoprion starts strongest by landing a few hits on each, and then Kraken gets him trap in its jaws. Sharkoprion with its reach though does a little damage to one of Krakens sides while it's trapped. Meanwhile, Deviled Egg has trouble starting up its weapon at first, but gets it running while the other two are busy with each other, and uses it to damage one of Kraken's wheels. Once Kraken lets go per the rules, Sharkoprion hits Deviled Egg and gets it on its back, which he can't recover from despite how his wheels are positioned. Kraken traps Sharkoprion again, but can't seem to move anymore. He lets go after some time and gets counted out.
Episode 2: Small interviews with the teams of Bombshell, Minotaur, Sub-Zero, and Vanquish on what went wrong with the bots after their losses.
Episode 3: Small interviews with the teams of Witch Doctor, Yeti, Basilisk, Red Devil, Whiplash, Lock-Jaw, and Blacksmith on how the new fight card format changes how they have to prepare for the tournament.

I never thought highly of Free Shipping and HUGE showed why. And now it's in nearly unrepairable shape. Not sure how HUGE would fare against Tombstone but it could be a dark horse.
Minotaur did Minotaur things.
Blacksmith (sponsored by Nuclear Blast, the #1 independent heavy metal label in the world!) showed why clusterbots really are not that good, even if you have a legend like Ian Watts at the helm.
BRUTUS WITH THE UPSET! Though I have to wonder, is Son Of Whyachi now a dinosaur in this competition?
Ice Wave is the feared bot it was in 2015 again. Chris and Kenny thought that the late hit was an accident due to the ends of the blade being the same color as the floor and Ice Wave's team may not have even known they weren't far enough away. If true, then the outburst from Yeti's team was understandable yet unwarranted. If not....

Even if it wasn’t intentional, don’t put yourself in the position for those kind of things. Funnily enough that wasn’t the match I was expecting a late hit in. Out of all the fights on this card it was Minotaur vs Hypothermia I thought we’d get one, because there was an infamous fight in 2014 between RioBotz’s Touro Maximus and Team Toad’s Polar Vortex(which is basically Hypothermia minus the grabby arms), which Touro Maximus won but then proceeded to score a vicious late hit(I didn’t see the hit itself in the only video of the fight I could find, but it resulted in a loud bang), and it just made Fuzzy livid.

Well, this episode was a dud. Sawblaze did well against Reality, but then Monsoon almost caused a Double KO, Captain Shrederator managed to knock itself out, Chomp flopped and yet Warrior Dragon only got a split win ( ?), and the only saving grace was Bronco pulling off a Robot Wars-style Out Of The Arena KO on Bombshell. Hopefully next week is better, and hopefully I don't have to see more Jurassic World stuff either as I have nothing but contempt for that series of films.

Hopefully next week is better, and hopefully I don't have to see more Jurassic World stuff either as I have nothing but contempt for that series of films. I am now a believer in Jamison Go and SawBlaze. He just had Reality at his mercy, and SawBlaze can just cut at will. It was even able to cut into Reality’s drum. I know drums are hollow, but even then that’s still some thick metal to cut into. Monsoon’s blade is vicious, but this is definitely a season 1.0-like Hazard, ie, impressive weapon, but it breaks down early in the fight after enough big hits. It wasn’t even actually mobile at the end, just it’s fidgeting was enough to trick the refs that it was mobile. Honestly they are lucky they ruptured Petunia’s hydraulics early because that would have gotten ugly with their blade stopped. Shrederator is just a dated design at this point if people can point to it and reliably say, “Just smash it into the wall once and it breaks.” That’s happened in both of its fights this season. SubZero may have gotten its ass kicked against Icewave in season 2 and HUGE in this season, but it is deceptive, as it managed to survive to the end of both fights. Thing is a tank basically. I am freaking sick of the Roman Reigns-like push of, “You will like them!” they keep doing with Chomp. It started in season 2 when they introduced Chomp as a fan favorite despite them being a robot that went 0-2 and was completely forgotten about in season 1 of the reboot. And they are still pushing this narrative despite most people hating Chomp because no robot in season 2 benefitted more from the revamped judging rules heavily favoring active weapon use, so Chomp would score a small number of hits you could count on one hand and they’d still have the edge in weapon hits because their opponents’ weapons died early. I just don’t get why they are pushing Chomp so much either. It has impressive tech inside, sure, but it is a shit combat robot. You know you’ve built a stupidly overly complex and over designed hammer bot when you need a bunch of self-righting mechanism, because the robot is so damn top heavy you know it is falling over when you fire the hammer. beta didn’t need any of this crap, because it was a properly built hammer bot(one that actually did significant damage to robots that weren’t just armored in lexan, like Chomp’s only legit win from breaking through the top of Shrederator), and the only reason beta tips over is because John Reid, the glorious madman that he is, uses a god damn etek to power the hammer. If they want to push a woman and a robot to attempt to get more girls into STEM fields(a noble cause that I fully support, btw), freaking back Witch Doctor. Witch Doctor is a far better robot than Chomp and at least Witch Doctor fights aren’t boring. As to how that fight went to a split decision I don’t freaking know. To my knowledge, Chomp only got one damn hit in! One hit! A new record low for Chomp, and it spent the rest of the match either trying to right itself, or sitting perched on top of a member of Warrior Dragon, because the robot ironically became really predictable in terms of its actions, or just getting pushed around by Warrior because they had the wedge. On Facebook Chomp’s official page said as a result of the righting pistons being, well, shit(they didn’t say that but let’s be real here), they rushed to make self-righting wings(like what they used last season) to use with the pistons, because their fight was late in the evening and they had to fight again the following day. And then we got to the main event, which unlike that last match, I have less things to say about. Bombshell is a pretty good wedge, and Bronco apparently isn’t the lowest robot here. However as is usual with Intertia Labs, it takes only one flip. And disappointingly, Bombshell’s self-righting plan still not working. The idea is that like the Robot Wars machine Aftershock, Bombshell’s drum is supposed to pop them back up onto their wheels when it hits the floor, End Game’s self-righting is also the same idea, but unlike Bombshell I think they will be able to right. The problem I think is Bombshell’s drum has too big of a tooth. It catches on the arena floor rather than doing the pop up. There’s also the fact that Bombshell’s drum stalls after every big hit in this match. I did not expect Bronco to chase after their second out of the arena in the reboot series(their first was in season 1 vs Stinger, the first ever OotA in televised Battlebots), however. Usually Interia Labs is incredibly cautious and thus after that first disabling flip, they back off to their starting square and just chill out the count out. Also the Inertia Lab guys are suddenly showing their age. Like they aged visually by like a decade between seasons 2 and 3. Oh and one last thing, poor Basilisk, Bale Spear, Double Dutch, and Parallax being used for a god damn Jurassic World ad. Especially since for all of those robots that was our first look at them in action this season. Also that shows they can have rumbles with 4 robots in it, they just choose not to for some reason. That being said this particular “rumble” actually looked like a tag team match. Which, yes please. We need some tag team action.
