So episode 18 will focus on the left side of the bracket, 19 will be the right side of the bracket, and 20 will be the final four. battlebots.com/bracket/

Part of me wonders if they gave Bombshell the W because they didn't want to risk The 1 Seed Tombstone getting knocked out in the first round and gave him an easier matchup.

Calling it now: Son Of Whyachi is going to take the Giant Nut. Only bot that I think poses a reasonable challenge is Tombstone and it's already wounded.

Part of me wonders if they gave Bombshell the W because they didn't want to risk The 1 Seed Tombstone getting knocked out in the first round and gave him an easier matchup. If that was the case they’d find a way for Red Devil to win. Bombshell has had issues but his Fight Night season has also only been robots that ended up in the Sweet 16. Not even Tombstone had that strong of a schedule(though Tombstone did have two of the strongest robots to be left out of the Sweet 16). And Bombshell actually did have Yeti dead to rights and would have absolutely won had Yeti not made their left side drive wonky. So Bombshell isn’t that easy of an exit, despite their record. Plus Bombshell is one of the few Sweet 16 robots with a wedge robust enough to tank a shot from Tombstone long enough to deal a lethal blow. Of course I want to see Tombstone rip them apart(one of the few matches I am actually backing Tombstone in), but Bombshell could potentially beat them.

HERE. WE. GO.
I figured it'd be difficult for Monsoon to get in a good shot on SawBlaze thanks to that dustpan, and as far as the front I was right, but not on everything else. Monsoon managed to rip apart the wheels and had they had a few seconds more they would have scored the KO. It was enough to pick up the upset anyway. After how good SawBlaze was all season, this has to be disappointing and a half for Jameson Go.
AND TOMBSTONE. GOES. DOWN. Once that chain came off, I knew Ray Billings was screwed, and then he inexplicably drove over the chain and got stuck. Where a new season will happen next year, one has to think that everyone will definitely be ready with an anti-Tombstone strategy. If it weren't for the insistence on primary weapons (albeit nowhere near the level of ABC), you'd be seeing more DUCK!-like bots.
Well, that was close to a squash. Minotaur ripped off Witch Doctor's wheels just like it did to Bronco, and then Witch Doctor caught fire. Better luck next year indeed.
Too bad we only got highlights of Lock-Jaw and Son Of Whyachi, and too bad I seem to have UrinatingTree levels of jinxing because Lock-Jaw absolutely tanked SOW's spinner. Maybe next season we'll get SOW vs. Tombstone (seriously, I want to see that fight happen), but in the meantime, Donald Hutson made the most of his second chance.
And in the rematch of their first fight of the season, it was even worse than the first for Bombshell as it got flipped again and went on fire.
And the Cinderella run of Monsoon ends quickly and brutally at the hands of Minotaur.
Considering Lock-Jaw's exposed wheels, I think Minotaur will be in the finals.

And the Cinderella run of Monsoon ends quickly and brutally at the hands of Minotaur. Considering Lock-Jaw's exposed wheels, I think Minotaur will be in the finals. I think a lot of people knew SawBlaze’s run would be a short one when it was revealed that the USA vs the World special fights were filmed during the course of the Sweet 16 tournament to film time. It just didn’t make sense for SawBlaze to being doing that, let alone fighting freaking End Game, if they were still in the running. Bombshell went so damn far into being meta against horizontal spinners that they made themselves weak to literally every other weapon configuration. Had Son of a Whyachi won, I actually think Bombshell could have won that fight, because they are basically Brutus with a longer taper on their wedge. Monsoon had an incredible season, and I am so happy for Tom Brewster. His Tauron robots kept getting screwed over in Robot Wars one way or another, and he brought the ultimate model in his line, Tauron Mk. III to Battlebots as Monsoon, and got to the god damn quarterfinals. Don’t be surprised if Monsoon ends up getting a toy in the future. Minotaur loves chewing up exposed wheels, so on one hand they should easily win, but on the other hand, forks are meta against, amongst other things, drum spinners because they get under the feeder system for the drum and can be quite solid while also being narrow, leaving not as much surface area to bite into for the drum. If Lock-Jaw keeps pointed at Minotaur and they are forced to go weapon to weapon a lot, Lock-Jaw could put up a good fight. This year’s Blacksmith fight showed that the fork meta works on Minotaur too.

Bombshell beating Tombstone is like the Browns getting into the playoffs after going 0-16 and beating the Patriots. Of course, the next fight was the Browns having 70 points scored against them the round after.
Looking at the other side of the bracket, Bronco/Bite Force looks to be a certain Semifinal, but I have to wonder if it's possible for HUGE to pull an upset off to spoil those plans? And of course, Yeti/Whiplash have a good shot at upsetting Bronco (who I think will defeat WAR Hawk with ease) to really shake things up.

So apparently the reason Warhead isn't in the tournament is because they didn't want to enter with the dino head and they couldn't fix the disk.

SECOND HALF TIME!
HUGE was doing quite well until they suddenly fell apart. Either they did a poor job of putting it back together after Icewave split it or the constant hitting on Bite Force jarred it loose.
Well, I never thought I'd see the day where Icewave would get carved up. Still had good pushing power afterwards but ROTATOR's blade was just too damned good. That's another bot that has improved tremendously from last season.
No ringout for Bronco but they did hurt WAR Hawk by sending it into the screws before killing one of the minibots. So pretty much as expected.
Holy shit, that was a close call for Whiplash. They fought a brilliant fight against Yeti and then almost went up in smoke. Still, Matt Vasquez is someone who is going to be a threat to win the Giant Nut every single time. And meanwhile, Yeti lands with a thud after a virtual third place finish in 2016.
And all that improvement could not save ROTATOR from getting torn apart by Bite Force.
ANOTHER MASSIVE UPSET! Whiplash barely gave Bronco an opportunity to breathe and eventually suffocated it entirely with seconds left. The way this tournament has gone, I don't know if either of the four remaining is exactly a clear favorite now.

The irony is Bronco’s pwangers, meant to keep vertical spinners away, basically helped seal their fate this match.
Granted it did as intended, for most of the fight Whiplash couldn’t exactly bring their spinner to contact on Bronco’s main body, but they gave the wedge plow on Whiplash the perfect leverage point to just push them all over the arena, especially because they spanned perfectly across the length of the wedge.
Also, haha! Take that everyone who was so assuredly confident that RotatoR wasn’t beating Icewave because they couldn’t possibly be the robot to hit Icewave’s engine. It “had to be a vertical spinner”. Well, look at that.
Man, Lock-Jaw, Minotaur, Bite Force, and Whiplash. Who would have guessed this collection being the Final Four?

Bite Force just keeps on rolling.
I wonder if the ending of Yeti/Whiplash will fast track that supposed rule about not being saved by the bell?
So now it's Lock-Jaw/Minotaur and Whiplash/Bite Force in the semis. If no modifications are made, I predict the championship match will be Minotaur vs. Bite Force with Minotaur taking the Giant Nut.

I just realized something, with all four semifinalists having vertical spinners of some nature(twin spinning “chunkers”, a drum, an asymmetrical bar, and a disc on a lifting arm), Battlebots is guaranteed to have its first true vertical spinning champion since freaking season 1.0 where Backlash won the lightweight crown. The only other champion in televised Battlebots to have a non-saw vertical spinner was Dr. Inferno Jr. when he had his little triangle spinners in his 5.0 championship run instead of the circular saw and oscillating spike he had in 1.0-3.0.
All of the other Battlebots champions have had different weapons at the time of their wins.
In the lightweight class, only Ziggo, Backlash, and Dr. Inferno Jr. were champs during the pre-Comedy Central events and during the CC run. Ziggo, with its spinning shell, winning in Long Beach ‘99, 2.0, and 4.0. And Dr. Inferno Jr. won 3.0 with its saw & spike combo.
In the middleweight class, the champions were Son of Smashy in Long Beach ‘99, who had a spring loaded axe for its weapon, Hazard in 1.0, 3.0, and 4.0 with a horizontal spinning bar, Spaz in 2.0 was a thwackbot whose weapon was 3 spikes on a stick(though apparently they did have an alternate configuration that had a battle axe on the side instead of the two side spikes), and of course T-Minus in 5.0 was a pneumatic flipper. Funnily enough vertical drum spinners were runner-ups in 2.0 and 3.0, El Diablo and Little Drummer Boy, respectively.
With the heavyweights, aside from Son of Whyachi’s epic trolling of the rules of using a shufflebot to illegally gain the weight bonus for walkers in 3.0, you had to get to the reboot to see another televised spinner champion. BioHazard and it’s legendary four bar lifter(seriously I am shocked more people didn’t copy the design) won the Giant Nut in *deep breath* Long Beach ‘99, 2.0, 4.0, and 5.0, and likely would have captured 3.0 too had, again, the Ewert Clan not skirted the rules. Vlad the Impaler won in Las Vegas ‘99, and 1.0, with its lifting forks. Bite Force won in reboot season 1 with lifting/clamping forks(though technically their real weapon was a clamping jaw, they usually removed the top part of the clamp to use their anti-spinner wedge and thus was mostly using their weapon as lifting/clamping forks. And finally, Tombstone ended the dry spell for spinners in reboot season 2 with a horizontal bar spinner.
And now for the Superheavyweights. Minion won in Las Vegas ‘99 with twin fire rescue saws and a ramming bar, against awful competition(to wit, freaking Mechadon won a match at this event, against freaking Ginsu), and in 1.0, though here it was basically a wedgebot most of the tournament as they lost their saw early on. Minion would end up being a mere 1 second away from becoming champion with their vertical flywheel set up in 3.0, but Vladiator pulled off an amazing comeback with its lifting spear that is one for the history books. Diesector won in 2.0 and 5.0 with its lifting & clamping jaws and twin hammers, and finally Toro won in 4.0 with its pneumatic flipper.
In total 16 robots have claimed the title of Battlebots champion on TV so far, with there being a 3/4 chance that number jumps to 17 on Friday. Out of those 16, only freaking two had some kind of vertical spinner that wasn’t a saw(and counting saws that only adds one new robot with Minion). That’s insane. For some reason vertical spinners do amazingly well on the live circuit but on TV, they usually come up short.
It’s actually kind of hilarious, in a bit of a tragic way, that the producers behind the current show have such a hate-boner for defensive bots, wedges, and control robots. When you actually look at the history of the show, you see that it was usually defensive and control robots that actually won things. Like even when not being control bots by default, you’d still have robots winning because they had the potential to be. Take for example Minion and Hazard in 1.0. Minion lost its saw early because the damn thing basically exploded, so they had to be a wedge the rest of the event, and did phenomenal at that. They basically tore DooAll apart by wedging under them at stupidly fast speeds. Hazard in 1.0 was actually more like a wedge with a spinner than a spinner with a wedge because that season they had ridiculous weapon reliability issues, usually getting only one or two hits before the bar crapped out, meaning they had to push their way to victory most of the time. For a show that appears to so desperately want only spinners to win, only 5(soon to be 6) of their televised champions were destructive spinners, the rest were wedges, or flippers, or lifters, or clamps, or were spinners with wedges and had to rely on the wedges when the spinners died out.

I'm surprised Bertocchini never made a 2nd Biohazard after the first one was forced to retire. I'd love to see it return to take on some of the newer competition.

Work just HAD to go until nearly midnight. So I missed almost the entire replay with the exception of the title fight.
And all I will say is Bite Force is a tough bot and Paul Ventimiglia is a crafty soul. Well earned, good sir.

Bite Force in all likelihood would probably be a 3 time champion right now if season 2 didn’t have the stupid judging rules it had. Aside from the newly geared motor he used in the back half of this season this was the exact same robot he used in season 2, meaning he probably has no issues against Yeti in the quarterfinals, nor Tombstone in the semifinals(as we’ve seen, Tombstone late in the tournament is extremely beatable), and honestly would just obliterate Bombshell in the finals, had they rightfully won over Chomp.
Also, here’s an eerie thing. Bite Force kicked the season off and ended it, with amazing fights. Season started with the stellar match against Blacksmith that went the distance(only barely, Blacksmith was likely done at the end), and then this surgical tear down of god damn Minotaur to end the season.
Oh, and one last thing, they really need to get more consistent about what they consider “controlled movement”. Bombshell won the last-chance rumble because it fidgeted in a wide enough arc to move halfway across the box before dying again, allowing them to be counted as alive at the end allowing it to go to the judges, we have actual god damn footage of one of the refs checking on one of the teams during a potential countout, telling the team that they need to crabwalk their robot, if they can, meaning crabwalking counts as controlled movement, Whiplash was moving all over the arena in clear controlled fashion, with literally only half its drive, and they get counted out while actively moving. Sure they were losing the match at that point anyways, like if it somehow went to the judges it would be unanimous for Bite Force, or the more likely thing is Bite Force makes good on its predatory positioning and ends the match for good by going in one more time, but still! To count out a robot that was actively moving via expertly well controlled crabwalking, despite evidence in the past that crabwalking is acceptable is just bad optics.

I think the fact that it's weapon was also non-functioning made the Whiplash KO a mercy KO. Even if it was still moving, there's nothing else it could do.
I honestly feel bad for Team RioBotz. As it was getting counted out, you could visibly see how upset Marco was. And the camera cut away as he was comforting Daniel.
But hey, congrats to Bite Force. It handled the fight card format with ease and made its case for the newest Battlebots dynasty.
Speaking of, I want the fight card format to be the new norm. This was the best season of the rebooted series by far and I hope it returns next year.
