Even there he starts out with a decent point about geek culture and fantasy women vs actual people; and then he goes off the rails. Exactly. He can't help himself. I've got massive respect for him as a filmmaker, even if I don't like more than a couple of his movies. He's been a driving force in pushing new technological boundaries since the '80s, but much like other filmmakers who are a law unto themselves, he simply doesn't know when to reign himself in.

Cameron, Lucas, really any of those guys that become huge to the point where no one tells them no do that. Make no mistake, it's not like either of those guys talents went away, it's just back when they had people around them to act as editors, collaborators etc.

I think the Avatar sequels could be the tipping point for his career. The investment has been huge, with 2 and 3 being filmed back-to-back and 4 and 5 going into production as soon as 3 wraps. A billion dollars across four movies and they're locked in, too late to cancel them now. If 2 doesn't bring in all the money (like, literally all of it) they're staring down the barrel of the biggest box office bombs of all time.
With the Marvel and Star Wars juggernauts as his competition, and showing no signs of losing their mass audience appeal, I can very well understand why he's hoping fatigue starts setting in.

I think the Avatar sequels will do ok-decent, but after a decade where not many people really care anymore? Sequels with that sort of distance from the original don't have a really great track record. It's even worse when you consider that that movie's whole appeal was the technology.

Am...I the only one that finds irony in him saying this when he's the director of ALIENS, an installment that turned the Alien franchise from a thriller horror idea into very much what he's accusing the Avengers saga of being?
Like, I like Aliens but come on, man. Some self awareness would be nice.

Well the new gimmick is underwater motion capture, which he's spent about four years developing, hence the delay. But okay-decent at the box office won't cut it. Very early estimates are saying it'll need to do a billion just to break even.

Right, I don't think it does anywhere close. And if it's up against anything big at the same time, it's getting embarrassed.

Right, I don't think it does anywhere close. And if it's up against anything big at the same time, it's getting embarrassed. It's being released December 2020, so it avoids clashing with any of the main Star Wars saga movies, and Marvel traditionally don't release anything over the holidays. And by then 20th Century Fox will most likely be a subsidiary of Disney, so it's unlikely there will be anything of significance running against it, but unless it finds a way to capture people's imaginations without the 3D gimmick I don't see much coming from it. It makes me wonder if Fox have gone so all-in on these four movies knowing that whatever happens, Disney will ultimately be footing the bill. If they're a success, it doesn't really matter because Fox are out of the movie business, and if they bomb, they've just taken $52 billion of Disney's money and saddled them with a massive money pit they can't do anything with.

He can't make a movie any more without creating a piece of (admittedly impressive) technology along the way which is quickly made obsolete. Obviously in Avater he created the 3D filming process, which took Hollywood about a year to figure out how to just do it in post production at a fraction of the cost without the need for specialised filming rigs.

James Cameron hate annoys me. Dislike him all you want, but he's a revolutionary film maker who has 30 years of money making films of good to great quality.
Guess what im tired of super hero movies too. Doesn't mean I shit on your dinner plate.

This is the same buffoon who said that Wonder Woman was a setback for women in film. He had a few good ideas decades ago and now just complains about anything audiences enjoy. He's Vince Russo.

He's just pissy that no one cares about Avatar. This is the same buffoon who said that Wonder Woman was a setback for women in film. He had a few good ideas decades ago and now just complains about anything audiences enjoy. He's Vince Russo. and Patty Jenkins politely told him to sit down and shut up.

He's pissed that the general consensus on Avatar now is that it's all glitter and no substance and yet he's making 4 more.

He's a talented asshole. Not denying his contributions to filmmaking, but when he says a lot of stupid shit and acts like a complete twat, people will call him out on it.
