www.wwe.com/shows/greatest-royal-rumble/article/who-was-greatest-royal-rumble-entrant-hiroki-sumiWho was Greatest Royal Rumble Match entrant Hiroki Sumi? Among the many surprises in the historic 50-Man Greatest Royal Rumble Match, the one with, perhaps, the least explanation was the emergence of Hiroki Sumi. Entering at No. 7, Sumi's impressive size, coupled with the overall mystique of who this guy was, immediately earned attention. And although he only lasted in the match for less than a minute — thanks to WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry — Sumi's entry into the match was still of interest to the WWE Universe long after he was gone. What's known about Sumi is that he's a former sumo wrestler who competed under the name Hishofuji for 12 years — a career that was highlighted by a 22-match win streak. At the height of his sumo prowess, Sumi was said to weigh in at nearly 500 pounds. The most interesting thing, though, may be that Sumi's Twitter avatar features a photo of him alongside SmackDown LIVE Superstar Shinsuke Nakamura. Was Sumi's appearance a one-time only thing? Or will we see him in the corner of Nakamura on SmackDown LIVE someday? Either way, the reemergence of Sumi will be hard to miss. Before the PC, he has trained and wrestled with Akebono.

I'm getting such déjà vu. Didn't we (post Akebono) get some sumo guy entering a battle royale or something with Cole freaking out on commentary trying to convince the audience to give a crap? The whole thing was reminiscent of Alexander Rusev's debut in the 2014 Royal Rumble, with commentary trying to sell him as a really big deal, but nobody knew who he was because this was a couple months before the Network launched, so the only people watching NXT were those few watching on Hulu.

I feel like the Saudi Prince was like “I want Yokozuna!” and they told him he was dead, so he said to get another sumo guy. Honestly...this is probably it. That is essentially exactly what Meltzer is reporting as a rumor.

You handled that response with more composure than I would have, lol. On another note, Tucker Knight is pretty decent. So is his tag partner (who oozes charisma). Heavy Machinery would be a very solid addition to any tag team roster a year from now. Matha?...well he will have plenty of memes coming his way.

The worst part of it was that he didn't even look like a real girthy sumo guy, but instead looked like some overweight Japanese guy.
If I was on the WWE roster and got left out of the Rumble for him I'd be real upset.
I wouldn't even mind if someone like the Sultan appeared instead.

At first I was disappointed in not knowing who sumo guy and the 2 NXT jobbers were but seems like 95% of the viewers were in the same boat.

Imagine Vince’s face if they requested Chris Benoit. Deary me that would've been something wouldn't it?. On the subject of wrestlers that were erased from WWE history do you think they'll request to have Hulk Hogan for any future shows?.

whatculture.com/wwe/ultimate-warrior-yokozuna-apparently-requested-for-wwe-greatest-royal-rumbleSpeaking on Wrestling Observer Radio earlier today, Dave Meltzer made the remarkable revelation that the "Saudi Prince" (presumably current Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman) apparently implored Vince McMahon to bring a host of wrestling's top stars to the Kingdom - amongst them The Undertaker, Ultimate Warrior, and Yokozuna. Yes, you read that right. The Ultimate Warrior and Yokozuna. The chairman was unwilling to comply with the request, on account of both men being deceased. Warrior passed away in 2014, just days after being inducted into WWE's Hall of Fame. The timing and magnitude of his death saw the news reach the mainstream media. Yokozuna died eighteen years ago in Liverpool, during an independent tour of Europe. The Undertaker - also dead, sort of - did however make an appearance last Friday. It's Meltzer's belief that Hiroki Sumi - a name so obscure that even WWE themselves ran an article asking who he is - was included in the 50-man contest as a proxy for the ersatz Samoan sumo. Whether this was an attempt to pull the wool over the Prince's crown or just an acceptable substitute isn't clear. Supposedly, the Prince also asked the company to bring "the guy with the crown" and the "guy in the black hat". No, not King Mabel and Blackjack Mulligan, but Jerry Lawler and Jim Ross, who are very much alive. Just a pity Sgt. Slaughter is secretly dead, or else the "army guy" could have came too.
