It has been said that not a whole lot of people in Florida cares about theses teams and because Florida is made of mostly transplants, most of the people in the stands cheer on th e opposing teams. The stadium in Tampa (Tropicana Field) with its pernament roof and ugliness on the Inside doesn't help matters. Marlins Park on the other hand looks to be a good stadium with its retractable roof.
If those teams meet each other in the World Series and it goes seven games, I think it would set a ratings record for the World Series...for the lowest rated World Series ever.

With the Marlins they just don't trust ownership any more

With the Marlins it doesn't help that every time they've had success they've immediately blown the team up the following year. Would be hard to sustain a fandom when it's like: "Our guys won a championship! And NONE of them will play here next year!"

Different Marlins ownership groups keep burning the fans. The Rays actually do very well TV wise in Tampa. Problem is the stadium is in a crappy location.

I think they have a location in mind but the city of Tampa keeps dicking them around on getting any kind of permission

Rays games put me to sleep.
Kids, if you've never seen an Expos game in Olympic Stadium, it's about the same. Except Tampa's uniforms aren't as cool.

It's pretty sad because the Marlins won two World Series in their first 10 years and seemed like a premiere NL club.

The South is football country, specifically college football country. Atlanta's always had a lackluster fanbase as well, despite all their success.

It's not so much "Florida can't support baseball" as much as "The Rays play in the worst stadium in the sport" and "The Marlins have burned their bridge with the people of South Florida and poured gasoline on top of it."
I mean, look how hot the crowds are for Lightning games. And that's freakin' hockey. Give people an overall product worth supporting in the long-term and they will.

I think it was said that the Rays stadium is a 30 minute drive from most of the Tampa population, on a good night. For most people going to the game, it takes over an hour. That's what everybody always says when talking about attendance. It's a beyond terrible location for a stadium.

Also isn't Tampa's stadium also in really bad condition? Like they kind of need a new one. As awful as cookie cutter stadiums were, they were built to last. Dome stadiums from the mid 1980s to late 90s decayed almost immediately. I mean, the St. Louis Dome is a glorified warehouse, and the Metrodome fell apart. Should be noted it was built in 1990 and by the time they did get a team, it was dated. Where Tropicana Field is in Tampa Bay is essentially the senior citizens sector, and neither Tampa or St. Petersburg are willing to upgrade their confines (Tampa has a lifetime deal with the Yankees, while St. Pete doesn't have the resources), and after Loria fleeced Florida to both demolish the Orange Bowl & build a ballpark with too many baubles, there's no way the Rays will ever upgrade their venue unless they relocate.

Vegas is a hot ticket with NFL and NHL getting a team there Won't be surprised if baseball tries to pull that with the Rays

They’d have to go to the AL West more than likely but that would make shit out of wack which I don’t think MLB wants. AL West would have 6 teams while AL East would have 4

AL West would have 6 teams while AL East would have 4 Before Tampa Bay, Detroit was in the East even though Cleveland was closer, so I could see Detroit in the East, Houston in the Central, and Las Vegas in the West. Should be noted that they finally built a brand new ballpark for the 51s.

Apples and oranges, granted Lightning are well run and Rays and Marlins are not but Hockey has half the games as baseball and much smaller velues to fill. The biggest problemo imo is South Florida is just oversatured with sports teams. Southern California has 4 times the amount of people as South Florida and less pro franchises in the big 4 sports. That doesn't even account the fact much like AZ and So Cal that the population is one of the places in Usa where people frequently locate to and away from.
