Tonight was another lovely example of why I watch RAW on mute.
Michael Cole was good once. He is now a steaming pile of refuse.
Jonathan Coachman was OK at one time. He is now an eighty-alarm tire fire.
Corey Graves... well, I never liked him but a lot of people did. He is now a complete shitshow.
I don't watch SD at all so I'm afraid to ask how bad it is there, but f***ing hell in a goddamned chicken basket, those three assclowns make RAW unwatchable with the volume on.

Ugh I hated them!!!!!!! It's minor, but during the Ziggler/Drew vs. Slater/Rhyno match, we finally get a moment between Drew and Slater. The crowd is chanting 3MB, Slater and Drew are clearly playing off it. Are the announcers making reference to them formerly being in a group? NO! They're busy reading the stats on Drew and bitching about each other and ignoring what's going on in the ring to do their spiel!!! Because that's what's important!!!!!
Thank God Smackdown is generally better. Graves is way more tolerable and Philips is a good play by play guy and Saxton actually can contribute unlike Coach. Smackdown's commentary feels like guys who like working together who can throw out some light hearted jabs at each other while Raw commentary sounds like 3 guys who not only don't like working together, but actively resent working together.

The three of them just shit all over each other past the point of heel and babyface dynamics. It's like listening to parents in the middle of a divorce.
Why does Vince like this shit?

They were really hitting bottom in the Ember/Sacha/Ruby match.

It's just endless blah-blah-blah. They can barely shut up for 0.2 seconds.
Big part of why I don't watch RAW/SD very often today.

You know what it’s like? It’s like being sober around drunk people. They won’t shut up, and think they’re being funny, but they’re really just obnoxious.

I know one of the commentary directives they got years back was “Commentate like you’re with your buddies at the bar”, but I don’t think they meant it so literally.

I wish I could listen to the arena sounds and stuff with out commentary Agreed. If there was a way to get all audio sans commentary, the shows would get so much better.

Tonight was rough, but I really thought Michael Cole was great last night.

To me the commentary is the one thing they need to completely overhaul that would improve the product instantly. It’s just three dudes rambling over the top of one another most of the time and yelling stuff. The Woken Matt stuff is a good example - are we supposed to believe Cole has no idea what is going on with Hardy? It’d legit take him a second to google it.

I've been watching 99 Raws recently but watched backlash yesterday and my gf who isn't a fan was in the room.
She made a few interesting comments but one thing she asked when I first switched from the raws to backlash (with her not realising it was something different) was "why do the commentators suddenly sound so bored"
First thing she said when I put raw back on was "the commentators actually make me want to look up to see what's going on when you watch the old ones"
I swear first 10mins of Rollins v miz they just casually chatted and didn't call the match once

WWE commentators have... I'm not going to call it the hardest job of any of the performers, but it is the hardest job to actually do well. They are being tasked to fill out more hours than anyone else in the company, and more than most could ever claim to have to in wrestling, period, right now.
None of that excuses what we get, though. They highlight virtually nothing. They never know when to fill dead air or to let a moment breathe. They distract each other from the action, and simultaneously ass-kiss AND act like they're above their jobs.
JR and Lawler weren't perfect, especially by the end, but they were a damn sight better than this. Even during bad matches, which sometimes they'd acknowledge, I didn't have doubts they were actually aware of what was happening. They had different tones for different situations, to where they had more than "shout", "passive aggressive comment", and "quiet to sell an injury has occurred or is being kayfabed."

I mean, sometimes they get it right, which makes the rest of it all the more infuriating.
I remember HIAC 2016, I absolutely loved the fact that the women main evented a PPV for the very first time and the chuckleheads at the table just let it happen without making a huge self congratulatory deal out of it.

Knowing when to talk about the match and when to feud with each other takes a special dynamic. Everyone can't be Vince/Ventura or Monsoon/Heenan or JR/King.
Even Schivonae/Heenan/Tenay or Lord Alfred/Mooney had a degree of showmanship even as commentators.
I don't know much about professional sports, is this type of banter common in baseball or basketball?

I like Smackdown commentary, because while it’s not the best, the team of Corey, Tom, and Byron works pretty well. They all feel so comfortable with each other and do their best to get storylines over.
But Raw..my god. Coach is the worst commentator I’ve ever heard, and I’ve had to listen to Art Barr and Josh “buckets of cash” Matthews before. Cole just hates his life by this point, and Corey on Raw is doing his best not to scream “LOOK AT ME VINCE” by the dumb shit he says every 3 seconds on commentary. No one feels comfortable, no one feels like friends, it’s just uninspired shilling and cocksucking.

This might just be me, I really don't get the commentary hate in terms of enjoying the product. If I'm interested in the product, it doesn't matter who's at the table and what they are saying. Now great commentary can add a lot to the product, but I don't think bad commentary takes anything away from it.

I said in Backlash I misheard one of them say that Alexa Bliss certainly is Brazilian...
It took me far too long to realize that they actually said Resilient because I mean I wouldn't put it past the commentary of claiming something like that.

It's just endless blah-blah-blah. They can barely shut up for 0.2 seconds. Even worse is that, in that long list of commentary commandments, they're directly told not to talk all the time. Production's not helping, either. Every time someone guests on commentary, count the cuts to them. It gets incredibly irritating.
