There’s something funny about the fact that both Punk’s and Jackson’s only bouts were losses to Mickey Gall. I’m sure they’re counting on Punk winning this one but I just don’t know. It could really go either way.

It could really go either way. It’s really tough to guess because Punk’s entire MMA career hasn’t made sense. From Punk’s of things if Punk wanted to go into MMA he could have gotten bigger long term pay for fighting weaker opponents in places like Bellator or RiZiN. From UFC’s side of things it doesn’t make sense as they could have made Punk a cash cow by either feeding him really weak opponents from the start or had Punk murdered in a couple fights against bigger names and better fighters than Mickey Gall. I’m hoping that Punk pulls out a win here but the fact that the fight looks to be taking place as scheduled despite Punk sitting on his butt in court rather than training in a gym may speak volumes. It could be that even before the Gall fight Punk learned he was in way over his head and now just wants to collect another big pay check. I guess we will find out in about a week.

It made sense to me. UFC is the big deal. That’s where the money and the spotlight is. Punk knew he’d get paid and he’d be on the same stage as Brock Lesnar who made UFC even more important to wrestling fans. Punk thought he could hang. He was wrong. Punk was already considered too old to get into MMA. He wouldn’t have had time to play out the way you suggested. Gall was 1-1 before fighting Punk. He was considered a nobody. UFC didn’t knowingly feed him a strong opponent. I’m sure they wanted to make more money with him. Hence this second attempt. I see one of two things happening here. Either Punk narrowly gets the win and he’s satisfied his urge to fight and his damaged ego or history repeats itself and Punk goes down hard and fast again. I’m leaning towards the second scenario. I won’t be watching but I’ll be back to see the gifs. I’m curious to hear the result but I have no investment in whether he wins or loses. The first fight was enough for me.

Punk legimitately thinking he could hang seems to be the case, which makes all this all the more puzzling to me. It’s like someone who played a few high school basketball games 10 years ago thinking they are NBA material. It is all delusional and just surprising as Punk comes off as at least somewhat intelligent. I think you misunderstood me or misunderstood Gall as an opponent. Gall is a legitimate prospect with a brown belt in BJJ. He was not 1-1 when he fought Punk. He was 2-0 when he fought Punk and also undefeated in amateur competition. He went on to bear a UFC caliber fighter in Sage Northcutt. MMA has no shortage of cans, but Gall isn’t one of them. UFC match makers knew exactly what they were doing when they made Gall/Punk a fight. As for how I laid things out, it has been about 4 years since this whole experiment began. Neither scenario I provided takes a particularly long time to unfold. In the first cass you just have Punk do his training and fight the few bums who are worse than him. Like that fat dude that got fed to Batista in his one MMA fight. Cans are out there and they’re not tough to find. They tend not to have BJJ brown belts and a string of first round submissions like Gall had. In the second and probably more profitable scenario just feed Punk to name fighters who are way out of his league. That takes literally no time as you’re just Punk up to fail so no amount of training is going to help him there. The only problem is you might have to have these fights during UFC’s in Japan since no athletic commissions in the US will probably sanction these haha. I laid out my ideal scenario a while ago which was kind of a combination of these two. The way I laid it out this thing would be at or near it’s end by now and have been more profitable for UFC and perhaps make Punk come off at least somewhat better. As it is this thing may be at it’s end anyway.

Maybe it’s both. Punk wanted to be a name in the UFC. He had enough fame to get himself there so he did. Your scenario wouldn’t have brought him the fame he felt he needed. I’m sure plenty of wrestlers that got involved in other avenues of MMA would’ve preferred to be in the UFC too.

All I want out of this card is RDA smoking Colby. I will be a Dos Anjos fan for life if he destroys that clown. Covington is what you get when you take a McGregor or a Sonnen and take away the talent and the shreds of likability.

Cynical fight logic (which is't 100% - see Wilder vs Ortiz) says Punk is getting the W here.
It doesn't make sense for CM Punk to be a laughing stock again, and it doesn't make sense for the UFC to pair him with can he can't beat.

Its amazing how in the space of less than 3 years Robert Whittaker went from being a average welterweight to the best 185er on the planet.

Mike Jackson has now gone on record saying after CM Punk he wants to fight Artem Lobov at 155 then Conor McGregor in boxing. Seriously. Source: www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbssports.com/mma/news/ufc-225-meet-the-man-who-plans-to-end-cm-punk-and-his-mma-dreams-in-chicago/amp/Lobov is best known for being Conor’s buddy in mischief for that whole fiasco where Conor and friends attacked a bus. He also is in danger of having a losing overalll record if he loses his next fight. UFC fans have not seen much from Jackson, but there is little to suggest that he is UFC quality at all. He was a cherry picked can for Gall and they’re recycling him with the hope he can be a can for Punk too. Jackson is kind of shrimpy and could realistically make lightweight. If he gets another fight his best bet would be to get a crappy bantamweight or featherweight who has trouble making weight. Maybe a real no name guy like Bharat Khandare on Fight Pass. Khandare is a featherweight who lost his only UFC fight by first round submission. I don’t think he has had weight issues, but believe he fought at bantamweight at some point before UFC so Jackson would at least have the size advantage.

To be fair to Lobov, the dude is tough as f***. No, he didn't stand a chance against Cub Swanson but he went the full five rounds. Too bad he got bitten by the stupid bug at the same time as his teammates.

I'm getting tired of Colby Covington's racist gimmick. I really like that people defend Colby's brand of bullshit by saying that he's meant to be a heel. As if saying random statements to see who gets mad is a good thing.

As if saying random statements to see who gets mad is a good thing. Chael Sonnen was a good heel who may have done a lot of talking on his way to both shots at Anderson Silva, but he had the talent to actually back it up and he beat people worth a damn on the way there. Covington is just a full-out piece of shit whose only win of note has been against a morbidly past-his-prime Demian Maia.

The main event is an interesting fight, but I can’t say I care for seeing Punk fight again, or anything involving Covington. Probably gonna skip this one.
