48 teams? Boo. The point of qualification rounds just went out the window. They totally just NCAA basketball’ed this. “Everyone gets in—yay.” Ugh.
Also, pools of 3 with top 2 advancing? No sale. That’s just awful and a lot of meaningless football before elimination rounds.

No Chicago? That's insanity, you can put ANY game there and both sides will have a great turnout.

48 teams!? There’s going to be some of the worst football ever in the opening rounds.

Hopefully I'll live the eight years to be able to watch Canada in a World Cup.

Will the successful 2026 World Cup bid encourage the Redskins to build a new stadium

At least we won't be using slave labor for this World Cup.

I honestly thought that FIFA would somehow get this to Morocco just to screw the US. I'm very happy about this!

So do the US, Mexico, and Canada all get auto bids?

So do the US, Mexico, and Canada all get auto bids? That’ll be at FIFA’s discretion, because of the situation of there being multiple hosts. I can’t imagine they wouldn’t get them, though.

This is such awesome news, and I will be trying very hard to make it to a game when the time comes. Likely my only ever opportunity

I honestly thought that FIFA would somehow get this to Morocco just to screw the US. I'm very happy about this! It probably would've gone to Morocco under the old voting system, but the new one opened up voting after the backlash with the corrupt vote that gave Qatar the 2022 World Cup. The reps for the North American joint bid also did a lot of campaigning on their part to win over votes to their side.

With the expansion it is a sure thing based on precedent set in 2002, when Japan and South Korea both had auto bids. Now to speculate what would happen if the expansion didn't go thru? US would have an auto bid since they are hosting the most games, and Mexico and Canada would fight it out in CONCACAF. Whoever is higher would earn a bid. This is a moot point since, if FIFA didn't have the expansion, the WC2026 would have gone elsewhere.

I just realized that this means the World Cup will be taking place during the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Groups of 3? Oh fantastic, can't wait to see teams deliberately drawing with each other to guarantee they both go through.
