As far as first party Nintendo characters, I think one of the biggest things they could do is introduce a new Zelda franchise character. Despite changes to the core characters, we haven't actually got a NEW rep from there since Brawl. Impa would most likely be the choice they use...though I personally, even if she was only in one game, love if Linkle somehow made it in. I also feel either through Ware or Land that Wario should have more representation. Mona as a Wario echo, using some animals for some of Wario's moves (like her elephant replacing the Wario Waft). Or my personal preference of Captain Syrup somehow getting in (unlikely, I know). And I'm sure they could find, if Sakurai ever learns of the series since it never came over to Japan, a way to make Mike Jones from StarTropics play differently than the Mother Boys. Kind of the problem with Impa for me is that while she's theoretically the fourth most important recurring character... she really isn't a recurring character? Like, at all? I mean, there's some broad strokes with Zelda to be sure, but there are still some unifying factors there. Impa on the other hand has jumped around blindly between different builds, vastly different designs, different levels of prominence in the story, different ages, different fighting styles, different relations to Zelda... The only even kind of consistent aspect of her character is her race. I dunno. She'd be a good Sheik Echo, but as an actual character I'd, top of my head, definitely take Midna & Wolf Link, Linkle, Ghirahim, Fi, Vaati, a generic Yiga Clan member, Tetra, Mipha, Medli, Toon Ganondorf, and Skull Kid over her.

That's the thing though...you mention Sheik, and outside the Smash Bros. series, not counting costume cameos like in Breath of the Wild, Sheik has only ever appeared in Ocarina of Time and Hyrule Warriors...and was in Smash with Ocarina being the only game (though still part of Zelda at the time. Impa has appeared more because of that, and in her younger form at the very least is usually seen as a strong woman fighter. Mix some stuff from her Ocarina design and her Hyrule Warriors design (not sure about her Skyward Sword one, haven't played that one) and you could have a good fighter. Moveset wouldn't be too much of a problem because at this point she's got stuff to draw from, whether Hyrule Warriors or the Zelda series as a whole, where Sheik didn't really when put into Melee.

I'm still rooting for the possibility of them giving Assist Trophies the nod in terms of playability. The assets are already there (and a few are developed to the point where they even have some of the features that playable characters have, such as dodging, movement tactics, and being KO'd), so there's less time to develop, and you can likely sell them en masse, and still keep them in the game as ATs, but disable their functionality whenever they are played in a stage (heck, even making stages for them is optional). Naturally, my #1 character request is obviously Isaac, and with Golden Sun having the second most non-represented spirit count at 8 (behind Rhythm Heaven/Tengoku at 9, which is another one people like to look at), you don't really need to give the series anything extra besides missing party members and the elemental Djinn. Plus, Motoi Sakuraba would likely just remix his own compositions. That being said, I just don't see that happening.
Still... never hurts to hope, right?

Would be nice to see some get promoted, but I really doubt it. My personal top five on that would probably be Ashley, Midna, extending it to Pokemon Mimikyu, Tiki, and... maybe Takamaru, but Isaac would be up there.

Call it the "Its Grinch Night" to last November's "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" fake Smash Leak, because supposed footage of a Mii Costume Leak is making the rounds. Seems too wish fulfillment given the costumes involved, but if not real, its an impressive fake leak: {Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW}
Lots of people saying that a Mallow hat and Cacodemon hat suggests Geno & Doom Slayer, but even that's an assumption.
There's been some talk on how difficult it is to mod Mii costumes, which would suggest its real, however after the Rayman video and the aforementioned Grinch leak, I'm not inclined to immediately believe anything, even a video like that.

Well, in the event that's true - personally I don't think it is - I feel... very torn. {Spoiler}I really think Doomguy is an absolutely absymal choice to include, but I'd be so happy over Geno I really don't think I'd even care.

Well, we'll know for sure on that leak in a few days, because:

45 minutes? Man, that's a buttload of time. 10 minutes devoted to looking at one of Terry's alts in various ways: ...or maybe I'm just a weirdo that wants this to be an alt for Terry.

45 minutes? Man, that's a buttload of time. Since the previous videos for DLC were about 20-25 minutes, this means that we're getting info on a bit more stuff. The new DLC reveal obviously, but maybe some info on other additions.

I'm okay with DoomGuy as a possible addition. He represents a gigantic part of game history and has some banger music to go with him.
Better him than some trash-tier mascot like Rayman or Spyro.

I am quite curious to hear more details on the future DLC. I’d be quite alright with some Echo fighters if they’re reasonably priced

Nintendo has said there's no new announcements about upcoming unannounced fighters during the presentation. So an extra twenty minutes with Terry? link

So 45 minutes of just breaking down Terry's moveset?
Yeah, I'll probably pass.

So 45 minutes of just breaking down Terry's moveset? Yeah, I'll probably pass. Probably won’t just be his moveset. Might be Sakurai explaining to people what the hell SNK is for all the people wondering why Terry’s a big deal. Or could just be 45 minutes of Sakurai being a complete and total fanboy given his sheer love for SNK fighting games.
