On Christmas Eve 1945 in Fayetteville, West Virginia a fire broke out and the Sodder house burned to the ground killing five children or at least what they thought at first. After a couple months the parents began to believe the kids had been kidnapped and still alive. There was a lot of strange things that happened before the fire like a strange phone call, threats made against the family, a loud bang on the roof right before the fire started and other things. Do you think the children survived or did they die in the fire. Here is a link to the full story. The Children Who Went Up In Smoke.

It’s an interesting story, but like most of this type the simplest explanation is also the most likely. Those kids died in the fire, and the remains were essentially cremated. Generation Why did a great episode on it.

I post over at websleuths.com and there is a section for the Sodder children. I know that the Sodder's granddaughter posts there and Sylvia, the last surviving member of the Sodder family in the fire, has also read some of the posts. I am careful what I post over there because of this but I believe the family never told all the facts to the story.
