So obviously if you watch spots you're going to hear a lot of commentators that you do and don't like. What is your list
Like:
Mike Breen - He's a great voice for the NBA and too bad he's stuck with two knuckleheads who act like Bobby Hennan at Hog Wild
Ryan Rucco - I find him to be a much better commentator than Michael Kay and his Judge HR call in Seattle last year was amazing
Clyde Frazier - Voice of the Knicks. He's probably an acquired taste if you aren't from NY but he's great and never shy's away from voicing his discontent with the Knicks when they are bad but also praises the other team when they are good
Don't Like: Joe Buck - His calls during the world series make him sound like he rather be elsewhere and there is years when he's clearly playing favorites
Hawk Harrelson - I hate homers. I guess that was part of his appeal but I just found him annoying
Mark Jackson/Jeff Van Gundy - They are one combined person. At one point they were really good but for the last few years they are horrible. They ramble on and on about things no one cares about (Jeff and his changing rules) or kiss ass (LeBron is so great when talking about a simple bounce pass). All Jackson can do is say his tired one liners and Van Gundy is like Hennan collecting a paycheck at the end of WCW

Love: Ken Wilson, Dick Emberg, Marv Albert on NBA on NBC.
Hate: Joe Buck, Jack Edwards, Doc Emrick.

If I ever see Cris Collinsworth on the street, I may punch him in the face for his performance during this year's Super Bowl. He should have just started the broadcast stating, "Folks, I'll be honest. I want the Patriots and my hero Tom Brady to win so bad, I'm not going to even try to be impartial tonight."
That said, Joe Buck is still the worst.

Joe Buck made the greatest play in NFL history (Eli Manning dodging everyone and throwing it to Tyree, helmet catch) seem like someone ordering coffee. It's one time where Mauro Ranallo's histrionics would have been appropriate.

Joe Buck made the greatest play in NFL history (Eli Manning dodging everyone and throwing it to Tyree, helmet catch) seem like someone ordering coffee. It's one time where Mauro Ranallo's histrionics would have been appropriate. That's the worst call in sports, bar none. Buck claims he wasn't sure if it was a catch, and didn't want to commit and look stupid. Yet, one of the most famous calls in SB history is just that, when Verne Lundquist called the Jackie Smith drop a touchdown and doubled back with "Bless his heart, he's got to be the sickest man in America." Because Lunquist is a very good commentator (despite him and CBS being relentless SEC shills nowadays) and invested in calling the game. Buck is more interested in not being wrong then calling arguably the biggest play in NFL history. They constantly show that replay, and almost never with the audio of his call. That's his legacy: that producers routinely think "this would be better if we just left out Joe's contribution entirely." |

Pat Summerall is badly overrated, as is Gus Johnson.
Meanwhile, I may be the only Joe Buck fan in existence.

Like: I'm not a Cub fan by any means, but I like Pat Hughes on radio. I used to listen to him and Uecker calling Brewers games. Ron Coomer is just a body to bounce things off of.
Ed Farmer (White Sox radio) has a ton of fun stories for a journeyman pitcher and he's been there a long time. He no-sells Darrin Jackson's lame attempts at humor 98% of the time.
Wayne Larrivee (Packers radio) is the best at football (and basketball when he does that).
Jeff Joniak (Bears radio) is how a play-by-play guy should be. He and Tom Thayer work well together. He's very even-keel, excitable when it matters.
Steve Stone (White Sox TV). Dude is intelligent. His style is dry but he breaks out the knowledge. There's a reason a lot of folks want him as a GM or scout. And Steve is smart enough to not want that job.
Don't like: Stacey King (Bulls TV) is the Mauro of basketball. I don't understand half the stuff he's saying. And he yells constantly. You have a mic, keep it down!
Didn't like: Ron Santo (Cubs radio). I love his story. I respect his career. I wore #10 because of him. But he was a dogshit color guy. Every so often a ball was hit and Ron would just groan 5 seconds later. "Are you okay Ron? Or did Soriano drop another fly ball?"
The worst: Dick Butkus (Bears radio). Back when the Bears thought having FOUR MEN in the booth was a good idea. Dick added nothing except when there was a fumble; he'd scream "BALL!!!"

Like: Ian Eagle: Brings excitement to any sport he calls, but less over the top than Gus Johnson (Who’s still another favorite of mine despite him being pigeonholed into doing college sports.
Gary Cohen: Probably the best local PBP broadcaster in NYC. I particularly like it when he gets salty when his Mets are losing to the Yankees.
Bob Costas: Right up there with the Enbergs, Albert’s and Lundquists in the field of legendary PBP guys.
HMs go to Matt Vasgersian, Bob Papa, Gary Thorne., Greg Gumbel and Kenny Albert.
Dislike:
John Sterling/Suzyn Waldman: After about 18+ years, I’ve finally pushed the radio aside chiefly because of these two. Sterling has no idea where the ball might be on any given play and Waldman’s grunts/groans are irritating af.
Kevin Burkhardt: I’d love to know how dude went from Mets sideline reporter to #2 PBP guy on FOX. While he’s not an embarrassment like Dick Stockton, the leap is odd
Paul O’Neill: I’ll tell ya what. I’ll tell ya what. I’ll tell ya what.
Thom Brennemann: Perhaps all the years calling Reds game have sapped him of his energy.

I know he still gets time on other local spots but as far as national goes I haven't heard him in a long time since his hype died down

Their best combinations are either David Cone and Ken Singleton or Ryan Rucco and David Cone/Ken Singleton

I have a lot of favorites, but I have one that I cannot stand at all and he makes me mad just hearing his voice. That man is Mike Patrick from ESPN. He has made so many cringe worthy, face palming statements that it would take me a long time to go through them.

I grew up in DFW watching Jim Sundberg and Steve Busby call the Ranger games on Channel 11. They always had some fun stories from their playing careers, they called the action without being over-the-top and they weren't overcome with blatant homerism. I loved watching them.

Favorites: Doc Emrick, David Cone, Walt "Clyde" Frazier, Ken Singleton. I can't say he's a favorite yet because he's only been around for a year, but I'm getting really fond of Tony Romo, too.
Least favorites: Joe Buck, John Sterling, Suzyn Waldman, Bill Rafferty

The commentators for the SF Giants, Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow, are amazing.
Shout out to Jon Miller and Dave Flemming as well.
Giants fans are truly blessed with their excellent commentary team.

Then he went to St. Louis and the Score replaced him with Chris Singleton. Who was a decent guy but rather dull. (Then they got Stone Pony on the radio for a year before switching him and DJ. 2 pitchers calling a game doesn't work.) Rooney is a good, but not great announcer. Solid calls, prefect radio announcer but just not very memorable. McLaughlin is good on TV as well, but both are killed by just really bad booth partners (Mike Shannon, Al Hrabosky, and the dogshit worst: Tim McCarver). Rooney would be better as a one-man booth. |
